There is an unforgettable beauty to the Karoo, a vast semi-desert, that seems empty save for the stars overhead and sheep eating grass below. Economic opportunities here are few.
But the Karoo’s clear skies also draw some of the world's best scientists. A radio telescope project called the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is under construction, with the latest group of 64 giant antennae(天线)due to be completed late next year. When finished, it will be the biggest radio telescope in the world and should allow scientists to peer into the origins of the universe.
Still, some sheep farmers are complaining. Because of the sensitivity of the telescope, the surrounding area must be kept free from radio interference(干扰)caused by everything from mobile phones to microwave ovens and some car engines. The SKA is buying up more farms than originally expected to ensure radio silence over an area of some 130,000 hectares. There will be no mobile phone signals allowed, except in the few towns in the area. Save the Karoo, an advocacy group, isn’t convinced by the bright future of groundbreaking astronomical discoveries. Its members fear the restrictions will make the Karoo “a cut-off and backward region”, and warn that people serving farms near the SKA site could face financial ruin. “I don't care about a black hole siting somewhere out in space,” says Eric Torr, an organiser with the group. “It does not put food on the table.”
Sky-high expectations in this down-at-heel area are also a problem. An SKA official complains that the locals expect the telescope to solve all their problems. Some jobs have been created, but few locals have the skills to find out the secrets of distant galaxies. Until recently the high school in Carnarvon, a nearby town, didn’t even have a maths and science teacher. The SKA organisation hired one, and is also offering scholarship to college students. Perhaps if the next generation's horizons are raised, they will be able to take advantage of the radio telescopes in their own backyard.
1.The project SKA is aimed at ______.
A.creating jobs for locals B.exploring the universe
C.protecting the sheep D.saving the Karoo
2.What most disturbs the locals’ life?
A.The shrinking of their farmlands. B.Restrictions of radio signals.
C.The construction of the project. D.Noises of car engines.
3.What can be inferred from Eric’s words?
A.Food should be put on the table. B.Eric faces financial difficulty.
C.The black hole is nowhere to be found. D.The project makes no sense to Eric.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Telescope in the Backyard B.Expectations of the Locals
C.Biggest Radio Telescope D.Great Astronomical Discovery

The cicada(蝉)has an interesting life cycle, but most of us only become aware of these insects in summer when they reach adulthood and begin their calls. 1.Some, like the Golden Emperor, have complicated songs. The summertime calls of the cicada are made by adult males to attract females. Their eggs are usually laid in scratches cut through the skin of the tree. Once it has been completed, the adults die.
When the eggs hatch, the larvae(幼虫)drop to the ground and live under the soil.2.They spend as little as several months for some species or as long as several years for other species buried under ground, shedding(蜕下)their skin as they grow. They shed their skin for the last time to become adult cicadas with their wings. 3. A few days after coming out of the soil, the males call for mates and cycle begins again.
The Golden Emperor, whose call is quite different from others, is one of Australia's biggest and prettiest cicadas. 4. The Golden Emperor calls in groups, but getting to see one up close is very difficult as they fly away when approached. Also, as their breeding season progresses, they gradually move higher up the tree trunks.5. The Golden Emperor is a delight just to listen to if you can't see the insect itself.
A.Not all cicadas have simple, loud noise.
B.This act makes their calls the only sign that they are still around.
C.The larvae attach themselves to tree roots and feed on their liquid.
D.When they have become mature, they come out of the soil as a group.
E.Their songs call on female to fly to them and fight for next generation.
F.If that happens, they will fly away and go to some place that they really love.
G.Their call starts with two notes and then rises sharply before it suddenly drops down.

Encouraging life to bloom in the middle of a desert is no easy task. But one company, The National Advisor Bureau, in the United Arab Emirates has come up with a unique plan to provide drinking water for the state’s citizens. The firm intends to pull icebergs from Antarctica to the gulf coast in order to harvest its billions of gallons of fresh water. One iceberg could provide enough for one million people over five years, according to the company. And the scheme could begin as early as the start of 2018.
The firm’s director says they have already travelled the transportation route and used simulators to check the practicality of the scheme, according to reports in Gulf News. Speaking to the site about what he is calling the UAE Iceberg Project, Abdullah Mohammad Shehi said: “we predict that it will take up to one year to tow (拖拉) an iceberg to UAE.” We have made the technical and financial plan. Towing is the best method. We will start the project in beginning of 2018. “We want it mainly for the water. It could also be good for tourism and the weather.”
The UAE is one of the most dry countries and one of the top 10 most water-scarce in the world, due to its extremely dry climate, which receives less than four inches (100 mm) of rainfall per year. Despite that, it consumes more water than double the global national average, putting the country at severe risk of droughts over the next 25 years. An average iceberg contains more than 20 billion gallons of water, according to the Abu Dhabi-based company. They take a long time to melt as 80 percent of their mass is underwater, while the white ice above reflects sunlight, reducing its heat. Upon arrival at a specially constructed processing facility, workers will “mine” the icebergs for their water supplies. Blocks of ice will be sliced and placed in giant tanks, before being filtered and processed. “This is the purest water in the world”, Mr Al Shehi added. He also claims the iceberg’s presence could provide a more moist micro-climate in the area, perhaps even prompting rainfall. And the project may prove a boost for tourism if it proves a success, with people travelling to see the unusual sight of an iceberg off the coast of the Arabian Gulf.
1.What is the main purpose of The National Advisor Bureau’s scheme?
A.To boost tourism and ease financial burden in UAE.
B.To save endangered wildlife and boost tourism in UAE.
C.To make drinking water accessible to the people in UAE.
D.To get the purest water in the world for the citizens in UAE.
2.What does the underlined word simulator in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.A type of mining tool to carve out the iceberg.
B.An electronic device to create and store energy.
C.A vehicle to transport the iceberg from Antarctica.
D.A piece of equipment to test potential conditions.
3.Which of the following helps slow down the melting of iceberg during transportation?
A.The special electronic devices to keep the iceberg frozen.
B.The time of processing iceberg before being transported.
C.Much of the iceberg lying under water with ice above reflecting light.
D.The floating of the iceberg in the seawater with a more moist micro-climate.
4.What is the author’s attitude towards the plan?
A.Favorable. B.Cautious. C.Ambiguous. D.Disapproving.

What's life like on a deserted island? Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona decided to find out.
The adventurous senator took a vacation from Capitol Hill and went on a fourday Robinson Crusoe style holiday with his two teenage sons to a remote, deserted island in the North Pacific Ocean.
The senator and his sons, 15yearold Tanner and 13yearold Dallin, traveled 5,200 miles from Phoenix, Arizona to the island of Biggarenn. They didn't carry any food or water.
The island is part of the Marshall Islands. It offered no basic supplies, so the Flakes had to catch and cook their own food and purify their water. Their diet was made up of coconuts, crabs and fish. They caught the crab and fish themselves and cooked the food over an open fire started with a magnifying glass (放大镜).
The Flakes brought along a lobster trap (龙虾夹) in the hope of having some delicious treats, but lost it within the first few hours after it was attacked by a shark. They also carried two pumps to remove salt from ocean water. It took them hours each night to pump for just a few gallons of fresh water.
One of the most memorable moments of the trip, the father said, was when he and his 15yearold son were almost caught by sharks after spearing (用叉叉起) a fish in the ocean.
Still, it was quite an enjoyable holiday for them. “For a dad it was a wonderful thing. No video games around, no television, no disturbance, no texting,” Flake recalled.

A.To meet Robinson Crusoe.
B.To spear the shark for food.
C.To spend a special vacation.
D.To swim in the North Pacific Ocean.
2.What can we learn from the text?
A.The Flakes could easily find a fire on the island.
B.The Flakes caught lobsters for food on the island.
C.The Flakes found basic things that they needed on the island.
D.The Flakes took much trouble to get drinkable water on the island.
3.According to the text, the Flakes' holiday is ________.
A.adventurous but interesting
B.exciting but painful
C.meaningless but enjoyable
D.boring but memorable

Imagine someone who has spent the majority of their life sitting with a sign on the side of the road and that very person giving someone their last 20 dollars. That’s exactly what Marine Corps veteran (退伍军人) Johnny Bobbitt, 34, did in October in Philadelphia.
Bobbitt served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a paramedic (医务辅助人员) in Vance County, N. C. before he became homeless. Nobody knew how he got to where he was because he was discreet about that.
One night in October, Bobbitt was sitting roadside with a sign in Philadelphia as usual, when Kate McClure of Florence Township, N. J. was driving home down Interstate 95 and ran out of gas. Scared and nervous, she got out of the car to head to the nearest gas station. As McClure was heading to the nearest gas station, she ran into Bobbitt and he told her to get back in the vehicle and lock the door. Minutes later, he appeared with a red gas can. He’d used his last $20 to buy her gas.
After that unexpected meeting, McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, who both live in New Jersey, visited Bobbitt several times to deliver gift cards, cash, snacks and toiletries. They then decided to create a fund raising page so he wouldn’t have to spend the holidays sleeping on the street.
McClure started the GoFundMe page on November 10. With the page, the couple hoped to raise $10,000, enough money for his rent, a reliable vehicle and up to six months’ expenses. Bobbitt’s story ran in a local paper. By November 15,more than 10,000 local people had made donations through the GoFundMe page and more than $300,000 had been raised.
On Thanksgiving, Bobbitt was resting in a hotel, his feet up on the bed, drawing up a grand plan for his new life, thanks to several thousand dollars raised to repay him for a good deed.
