Brenda Bongos was a happy, artistic girl. She had one big dream—to play the drums in a band. But one big problem lay in her way. To be good enough to play in a band, Brenda had to practice a lot, but she lived next-door to a lot of old people. Many of them are sick. She knew that the sound of beating drums would really get on their nerves. So, she had tried playing in the strangest places: a basement, a kitchen, and even in a shower. But there was always someone it would annoy.
One day, while watching a science documentary on TV, she heard that sound cannot travel in space, because there’s no air. At that moment, Brenda Bongos decided to become a sort of musical astronaut.
With the help of a lot of time, books and work, Brenda built a space bubble. This was a big glass ball connected to a machine which sucked out all the air inside. All that would be left inside was a drum kit(成套设备)and a chair. Brenda got into the space suit she had made, entered the bubble, turned on the machine, and played those drums like a wild child.
It was’t long before Brenda Bongos came very famous. Many people came to see her play in her space bubble. Shortly afterwards she came out of the bubble and started giving concerts. Her fame spread so much that the government suggested that she be part of a unique space journey. Finally, Brenda was a real musical astronaut, and had gone far beyond her first ambition of playing drums in a band.
Years later, when asked how she had achieved all this, she thought for a moment, and said, “If those old people next – door hadn’t mattered so much to me, I wouldn’t have found a solution, and none of this would have ever happened.”

Wanda Butts dropped the phone and screamed when she heard the news that her son was dead.
Josh had drowned (溺亡) while sailing on a lake with friends. The 16-year-old didn’t know how to swim, and he wasn’t wearing a life jacket.
Josh was not alone in the black community. According to USA Swimming, 70% of African-American children cannot swim. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention African-American children between the ages of 5 and 14 are three times more likely to drown than white children in the same age range.
In 2007, Butts started the Josh Project, non- profit that provides low-cost swimming lessons for children in Toledo, Ohio. The swimming lessons take place at a local high school over four Saturdays for a total cost of $10.
To date, the Josh Project has helped more than 1,000 children learn how to swim.
“The public pools near our home were closed, and other places were not affordable,” said Lisa Haynes, whose 14-year-old son, Joshua, is one of 60-plus students in the Josh Project this summer.
“I am less worried if Joshua is near water because he has the basics of how to swim,” Haynes said. “And we’re thankful for that.”
Butts is doing much more however, than just providing swimming lessons.
“She ups the awareness,” said Shaun Anderson, swimming coach who was so inspired by her story that he created a Josh Project swimming program at Norfolk State University. “Once these communities learn how to swim, they will pass it down, which results in future generations( that know how to swim.”
Butts said she has two wishes for the future: One is to change the drowning numbers of African-American children, and the other is to have a swimming center where the children can swim daily instead of just once a week.
1.What led to Josh’s drowning?
A.He was poor in boating skills. B.He gave his life jacket to a friend.
C.He was never taught swimming skills. D.He was careless when swimming in the lake.
2.Why did the author list the numbers in Paragraph 3?
A.To show children under 14 are more likely to drown.
B.To argue children should learn swimming at a very young age.
C.To show many African-American children lack swimming skills.
D.To introduce the difference between African-American and white children.
3.What can we lean about the Josh Project?
A.It has its own swimming pools. B.It provides lessons only in summer.
C.It serves children aged from 5 to 14. D.Its swimming lessons take place once a week.
4.What did Lisa Haynes think of the swimming lessons the Josh Project provides?
A.Expensive. B.Helpful. C.Interesting. D.Difficult.

One girl decided to study judo(柔道) although she had lost her left arm in a car accident.
The girl began lessons with an old Japanese judo instructor. The girl was doing well. So she couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the instructor had taught her only one move.
“Instructor,” the girl finally said, “Shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”
“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the instructor replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in her teacher, the girl kept training.
Several months later, the instructor took the girl to her first tournament. Surprising herself, the girl easily won her first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, her opponent became impatient and charged. The girl skillfully used her one move to win the match. Still amazed by her success, the girl was now in the finals. This time, her opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the girl appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the girl might get hurt, the referee(裁判员) called a time-out. She was about to stop the match when the instructor intervened(干预).
“No,” the instructor insisted, “Let her continue.”
Soon after the match restarted, her opponent made a serious mistake: she dropped her guard. Instantly, the girl used her move to pin her opponent. The girl had won the match and the tournament. She was the champion.
On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the girl gathered the courage to ask what was really on her mind.
“Instructor, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”
“You won for two reasons,” the teacher answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”
The girl’s biggest weakness had become her biggest strength.
1.What can we learn about the girl?
A.She was disabled in an accident. B.She disliked judo training.
C.She learnt several moves. D.She won the first two matches hard.
2.The underlined word “overmatched” probably means ________.
A.impatient B.depressed C.defeated D.trapped
3.The girl won the championship because of ________.
A.her bravery B.her tricks C.her skills D.her strength
4.Which of the following is probably the best title of the story?
A.The Story of a Girl. B.A Disabled Girl.
C.Defense Matters. D.Weakness Becomes Strength.
