Playing is serious business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.
Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight.
When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.
Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.
Crayons, paints and Play-Doh(彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to crate. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.
Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. Many valuable(有价值的) lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

Some of my favorite childhood memories come from Halloween. I love it all! Pumpkins, costumes and the thrill of trick-or-treating. But I think it would be funny to give me a child who was deathly afraid of my favorite holiday. If you have kids who are scared of Halloween, these tips should help!
Don’t minimize your child’s fears
It is helpful to let your kids know that you understand their fears. Halloween can be a scary holiday. Kids are just making sense of their world. We might think terrible monsters and bloody eye balls are cheerful—but to some kids they are pure terror. Young kids have a harder time telling reality from fantasy-making Halloween—a real-life horror movie.
Start preparing your child for Halloween early
It is impossible to keep your kids in a bubble for the entire month of October. Instead of avoiding Halloween, help prepare your kids for the holiday.
Tell your kids that during Halloween people find it fun to dress up like scary things. Let them know that the monsters and scary creatures they will see are not real.
Save the bloody zombies for another year
I love decorating for Halloween. I have two huge cabinets full of Halloween decorations! So there is no way I would tell anyone not to decorate for Halloween! However, to help your kids get used to Halloween—keep your decorations festival and pleasant. Pumpkins, friendly witches and cute ghosts are all kid-friendly decorations.
Don’t get too attached to those cute little costumes
The stores are packed with cutest costumes. Your little one might beg you to buy that $ 40 Frozen costume—only to refuse to wear it on Halloween. Kids are moody. What is exciting one week is boring the next. There is nothing more frustrating than spending lots of money on a costume your child refuses to wear.
Halloween is a fun, exciting holiday. Once your kids moves through their fears—they will see this holiday for what it really is—free candy. And who can be scared of that!

On a bluestone road, performers in ancient Chinese costumes charge on horses, stretching their arms and shouting all the way through.
The audience stands shoulder to shoulder by the road and on rooftops alongside the ancient alley(小巷), cheering together with loud drum beats in Xiadongzhai village, in the city of Yangquan in northern China's Shanxi province.
"It is a custom that has lasted for over 1,000 years, and represents the martial(尚武)spirit," said Yuan Yuxiang, Party secretary of the village.
In the Tang Dynasty (公元618年——公元907年), Xiadongzhai was a military relay station, where army messengers found food, shelter and spare horses before moving on to their next destination.
The process of transferring horses and leaving the station was later adapted into a folk performance held once a year, on the day after Lantern Festival.
Many are attracted by the boldness and skills of the riders, who do not use saddles(马鞍)or stirrups during the high-speed charge.
Over the years, the performance has become the most celebrated event in the village.
"No matter how far people are from home, or how busy they are, they try their best to return home for the fair on that day," Yuan said.
This year, nearly 10,000 people gathered on the road, which is 100 meters long and 4 meters wide, to watch the performance.
1.What do the performers wear when they charge on the horses?
2.Where does the horse-riding custom happen?
3.What was the main function of Xiadongzhai village in the Tang Dynasty?
4.Why do the people return home for the folk performance on the day after Lantern Festival ?
5.After you finish reading this text, please write at least 30 words to describe another interesting event in Yangquan?

In Britain, many theatres put on shows for children at Christmas and many theatres have a theatre-in-education team working there. This team, made up of actors and teachers, writes plays for children, usually performing them in schools. They do different plays for different age groups and the children often take part in the play in some way.
Pantomime is a special kind of Christmas show for children. It is loved by people and also allows the audience to join in. “Pantomime” was the name of the Roman actor who performed shows without speaking — this is where the English word “mime” comes from.
A pantomime is always based on a well-known children's story. But there are always certain types of characters in the show and certain situations and events. For example, a pantomime must always include a hero, known as the “principal boy” and this principal boy is always played by a pretty girl wearing a short costume. Then there is the comic older woman, known as the “dame” who is played by a man. There is always a group of men and women who sing and dance and often there is a pantomime horse. The horse is played by two men who form the “front” and “back” ends inside a “horse” costume. It is funny and it usually kicks the dame when she isn't looking.
Members of the audience have to shout a warning to one of the characters and argue with the character (usually the dame) when she does not believe them. When she shouts, “Oh no, it isn't,” the audience always responds with “Oh yes, it is!” The audience also learns and sings a simple song and a few children are sometimes invited to help one of the characters during the show.
