In her outstanding book, “Choose the Happiness Habit”, Pam Golden wrote, “Take the story of two twin brothers for example. One grew up and became an alcoholic (酒鬼), while the other became a successful businessman. When asked why he became an alcoholic, the alcoholic replied, “Because my father was a drunk.” However, the successful businessman’s answer was also “Because my father was a drunk.” when asked why he succeeded. The same background. The same upbringing (培养). However, the results were quite different. Why? The reason is that they had different choices. The brothers chose different thoughts which formed the situations they found themselves in at last, so they had different experiences.
There was a time in my life when I thought difficulty was due to “bad luck”. Have you ever heard the saying “When it rains, it pours”? That was my answer when others asked me how things were going on when I was in trouble. So what do you think I got? “RAIN”. More and more “RAIN”. I couldn’t understand why bad luck was always with me.
Pam Golden says, “You’re either living in the problem or you’re living in the solution.” Now, when I’m faced with what I used to think was a negative (消极的) situation, I use a different way to think about it. I force myself to replace those negative thoughts that make me lose heart in my mind with positive thoughts which encourage me to fight against the difficulty bravely. Sometimes I write down some ideas that may be a solution, which I combine with the lessons I have learned from the bad situations and the difficulties that troubled me in the past, and often, I find a solution to the problem soon. It seems that I should thank the difficulty I met with. The RAIN that poured in my world has become great experiences that provide me with valuable experience, from which I can benefit.
Now, it doesn’t “rain” as much in my life as it used to. In fact, most days are beautiful, cloudless and sunny! Sometimes I do get a rain, but I think it makes me stronger just like the rain helps plants grow up.
1.The example of the twin brothers shows that ________.
A. making good choices is the most important

C. upbringing makes a big difference
D. it is luck that leads to success
2.What does “RAIN” mentioned in the second paragraph refer to?
A. Water. B. Good luck. C. Success. D. Difficulty.
3.What is talked about in the third paragraph?
A. How the author collects useful experience.
B. How the author deals with difficulty now.
C. How the author gets help from others.
D. How the author lives in the problem.
4.Now, the author’s attitude towards “RAIN” is ________.

Imagine that the genome (基因组) is a book. The book consists of 23 chapters with thousands of stories made up of paragraphs, words and letters on different levels. There are one billion words in the book, as long as 800 Bibles; if I read the genome out to you at the rate of one word per second for eight hours a day, it would take me centuries; if I wrote out the human genome, one letter per millimeter, my text would be as long as the River Danube. This is a huge volume, a book of great length, but it all fits inside an extremely small cell nuclear(细胞核) that fits easily upon the head of a pin.
The idea of the genome as a book is not, strictly speaking, even a metaphor. It is true to a great extent.A book is a piece of digital information, written in one-directional form and defined by a code that translates a small alphabet of signs into a large dictionary of meanings through the order of their groupings. So is a genome. The only difference is that all English books read from left to right, while some parts of the genome read from left to right while some from right to left, but never both at the same time.
While English books are written in words of different lengthens using twenty-six letters, genomes are written entirely in words of three-letter length, using only four letters, and instead of being written on flat pages, they are written on long chains of DNA molecules (分子).
The genome is a very clever book, because in the right condition it can both photocopy itself and read itself.
1.How do human genomes read according to the passage?___________
A.Only from left to right. |
B.Only from right to left. |
C.From both directions at the same time. |
D.From one direction at a time. |
2.We can learn from the passage that the human genome ________.
A.is as long as the River Danube |
B.can be easily placed on the head of a pin |
C.is coded with an alphabet of four letters |
D.is smart enough to read and take photos of itself |
3.It can be concluded that the passage is mainly written for ______.
A.specialists in the field |
B.general readers |
C.natural scientists |
D.readers with professional knowledge |
4.The real purpose of the author’s comparison of the genome to a book is _____.
A.to focus on the differences between the two |
B.to lay emphasis on the similarities between the two |
C.to simplify the concept of the human genome |
D.to give an exact description of the human genome |

Long, long ago people couldn’t write and they had no books. But they had stories. People learned the stories by heart and taught new ones to one another. Sometimes it was hard to remember them all. 1.
The ancient Egyptians wrote their stories on something made from papyrus (纸沙草) plants. People in other places wanted to learn from the Egyptians to use papyrus.
2. So, parchment (羊皮纸), made from goatskin, later took its place.
In ancient China books looked a little different. People there used ink to write on bamboo or silk. And then they invented paper. Made of trees, paper was easier and cheaper to make than papyrus or parchment.3. Paper-making later spread to the West, but there was a big problem with these early books. Every single one had to be copied and written by hand.
4. They carved (雕刻) a page of words into a piece of wood or stone. They could then print the page by spreading ink on the wood or stone and putting it against paper. But it wasn’t until a German printer invented movable, metal letters that books became fast and easy to make. The letters could be used to print copy after copy, and the letters put together again and again to print different pages of words.
5. Once a luxury (奢侈品) only the rich could buy, they soon became a treasure everyone could enjoy.
A. It took years to finish making just one book.
B. But papyrus grew mainly in Egypt.
C. Things grew a little easier when writing was invented.
D. Finally books could be printed by the thousands.
E. The Chinese were the first to think of a way to speed things up a little.
F. Books in the West didn’t change for a long time after that.
G. Its surface was smoother and better for writing on too.
