Those who have suffered from insomnia know the sinking feeling of watching the clock tick. Now a new study in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that lying in bed awake may actually contribute to the problem of sleeplessness.
The study of 79 adults(average age 72)with insomnia aimed to determine whether brief behavioral interventions for insomnia would help.Traditional behavioral therapy(疗法)requires at least half a dozen hour-long sessions with a therapist — a costly commitment many patients either can't make or don't have access to.Other options include sleep-aiding medications or supplements. In the current study, the 39 participants in the behavioral therapy group received a 45- to 60-minute instructing session, plus a 30-minute follow-up session and two 20-minute phone calls.
Doctors offered the following behavioral interventions for improving sleep: reduce time in bed; get up at the same time every day, regardless of sleep duration; don't go to bed unless sleepy; and don't stay in bed unless asleep.
The other 40 participants in the study were given printed educational materials about insomnia, which included the same instructions given to the intervention group, but without the individualized sessions with a therapist. Two weeks later, the latter group also got a 10-minute follow-up phone call.
At the end of four weeks, the behavioral treatment group was significantly more likely to show improvements in sleep than the printed-materials group.By that time,55% of those who received behavioral treatment no longer met the criteria for insomnia, compared with 13% of the group that got educational brochures.
The good news comes at the same time as a report on the health effects of insomnia from the U.K.'s Mental Health Foundation. The report,Sleep Matters, suggests a link between insomnia and poor relationships, low energy levels and an inability to concentrate.Poor sleep has already been linked to depression, immune deficiency and heart disease.

The dangers of drowsy(昏昏欲睡) driving have been widely known. Now several companies have developed face-tracking technology that can tell when drivers become dangerously sleepy.
Here is how it might work. A camera in your car monitors your facial expression, compares it to a database of expressions and determines if you are likely sleepy or distracted. The car then alerts you to pay attention or pull over.
Affectiva has developed emotion recognition technology that aims to detect when people are just starting to get tired. The idea is to catch the warning signs before drowsiness really strikes. “Actually, when someone is drowsy, that is too late.” Gabi, vice president of Affectiva said. “What if you can see trends in someone’s face about five minutes before they become sleepy?” Affectiva’s program can recognize seven different emotions and 15 facial expressions. Its standards were developed by sifting (筛选) through a database of 4 million faces from 75 countries, said Zijderveld. She suggested that carmakers could coordinate (协调)the program’s facial recognition data with oral reminders, such as sound warnings, or (nonverbal)alerts, like a change of temperature and vibrations (continuous slight shaking movements).
Eyeris is another company working in facial analytics. Modar Alaoui, the company’s CEO, said that its software detects “eye openness” in addition to other facial indicators. The software can also read head position, which may indicate when someone begins to nod off.
These technologies aren’t the first attempt to fight drowsiness behind the wheel. Inventors came up with the similar device “sleeper beeper” to prevent sleep in cars back in 1983. The sleeper beeper was attached to a driver’s ear and would issue a noisy warning when the driver’s head nodded past a certain point. But the latest software would intervene (干涉) earlier and more effectively.

3.It is most likely that the “sleeper beeper” would send out a warning by ________.
A. shaking slightly B. making noise
C. flashing brilliantly D. changing temperature
4.What is the main idea of the text?
A. The dangers of drowsy driving have been widely known.
B. Inventors have tried out the similar device “sleeper beeper”.

There are many great movie directors of all time and the following are five of those who have largely impressed audience with their body of work.
As a member of the New Hollywood gang, Francis Coppola is best remembered for The God father series. His decision to cast Marlon Brando in the lead also met with fierce opposition from the studio bosses. Good sense became popular, and The God father went on to become one of the most memorable movies ever. Critics may point out that he has become less creative after his seventies, but try as one might, no one can possibly take the place of this great director’s work.
Stanley Kubrick’s movies focus on the themes like sci-fi, horror, dark humor and war. He used symbolism in most of his movies, giving us some wonderful screen visuals, as shown in 2001: A Space Odyssey. His actors in Hollywood complained about the endless number of retakes, but they appreciated the performance he milked out of them. People argue about films like Lolita, A Clockwork Orange and Paths of Glory, but these are now seen as classics.
Steven Spielberg is a great success at the box office, and he is one of the world’s most popular filmmakers today. As the creator of classics like Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, ET, Indiana Jones series, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, no one can win his hold over the audience. His critics accuse him of being emotional and over the top, but the fact remains that his movies attract the audience, and set the cash registers ringing.
Woody Allen is a director who directs movies full of crime and hate. This comic genius has given us Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters and Midnight in Paris, which have also become classical. His movies constantly include characters who arouse the audience’s sympathy and laughter at the same time, as they set out on a journey of self-discovery. Hollywood star power has never fazed Allen. Thankfully, awards and honors do not interest him, which results in creativity that is original.
