Unlike traditional commercials, Public Service Advertisements(PSA)are primarily designed to inform and educate rather than sell a product or service. The goal of a PSA is not to make a big sale, but rather to change public opinion and raise awareness for a problem.

My sister Jodie and I are always traveling for work. As jewelry designers, we need to go to a lot of shows. We can’t pack lightly and usually bring about four suitcases filled with our work.
Most of our stuff is made from heavy materials and metals. So part of the routine for us when we fly is getting stopped by security. Our jewelry sets off the alarms, and we’ve become accustomed to arriving early to go through private screenings. Most of the time, it’s not troublesome.
However, on our recent trip to a Paris trade show, we were stopped at security and asked to empty our bags. One of the agents walked over to another agent and they started whispering to each other. Both gentlemen came back, and one of them then told us that it seemed that we were carrying a very dangerous object.
My sister and I just said, “Huh?” Of course, we were a little concerned, thinking that maybe someone put something dangerous in one of our bags when we weren’t looking.
One of the agents then started to unpack our bags. I kept asking what he was looking for and then the object in question finally appeared. It was our Cosima necklace. It’s a piece of jewelry, with large, metal triangular spikes.
My sister and I looked at each other and breathed a huge sigh of relief. We started laughing and explained to the two male agents that it was just a necklace from our collection, not a weapon of mass destruction. They thought we were lying, and one agent kept repeating that he believed it was a weapon.
I tried to explain that we were jewelry designers going to a trade show, and this was simply a piece from our collection. But the agents didn’t buy it. Then a few women guards came over to assist. One of the women guards was holding an earring up to her ear and another was trying on a ring. Apparently, they liked our stuff.
It was only at this point that the male guards gave up. And I think they also got tired of listening to a bunch of women talk about jewelry. They let us through.
We took the names of the women agents and sent them a piece of jewelry when we got back to say thanks.
1.When the object in question finally appeared, the writer and her sister felt _______.
A. anxious B. relieved C. excited D. frightened
2.The writer and her sister were stopped by the agents because ________.
A. their suitcases were too heavy
B. the agents wanted to play a joke on them
C. they were suspected to carry dangerous objects
D. the agents wanted to admire the jewelry inside the suitcases
3.The underlined word “buy” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________.
A. doubt B. believe C. purchase D. understand
4.The writer sent the women agents a piece of jewelry in order to ________.
A. persuade them to buy her jewelry later
B. get help from them next time
C. show them her talent in designing jewelry
D. show them her gratitude for their assistance
5.According to this passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Someone put something dangerous in one of the writer’s bags.
B. The male agents didn’t believe the writer at first.
C. The female agents liked the jewelry.
D. The writer is always travelling on business.

高三英语阅读理解中等难度题查看答案及解析
For years, researchers have looked into a possible relationship between heat and violence. There are conflicting results over whether there is an actual connection between rising anger and rising temperature, but the murder rate constantly increases during the months of July and August, according to the FBI's annual crime report.
Many police chiefs say they put more policemen on the streets when the heat rises. “Calls for service always increase from May, June, July to August,” said New Bedford's Captain Richard Spiriet. “The longer period of time you have the heat, the worse it is. It's just the opposite in the winter time.”
Craig Anderson, a professor and specialist in social psychology at Iowa State University, argues the evidence is clear. “As the temperature goes up, people become more uncomfortable. They become easier to get angry,” he said. “That increases the possibility that a small conflict will be interpreted as more major.” Anderson conducted a couple of studies looking at crime rates over the course of several years within the same area to see when most violent crimes occurred. He found that violent crimes were more likely to occur on hot days and hot months—even hot years had higher violent rates than cold years, according to his research.
Other researches show it is not so much the physical climate, but rather the social climate, that causes increased violence. “During the summer months, people stay up later. They talk with their neighbours. They party with their friends,” said Jack Levin, director of the Brudnick Centre on Violence and Conflict at Northeastern University. “It is more likely to be large numbers of people interacting, and they are more likely to argue.”
Perhaps the realization that there is a link will help spur people in an argument step back and say “Let's cool off.”—both literally(字面上地) and figuratively(比喻地).

高三英语填空题中等难度题查看答案及解析
The researchers say a person loses two months for every kilogram overweight they are— and seven years for smoking a packet of cigarettes a day.
Unusually, the Edinburgh university team found their answers by analysing differences in people’s genetic code or DNA. Finally they think it will show new ways of helping us to live longer.
The group used the genetic code of more than 600, 000 people who are taking part in a natural experiment. If someone smokes, drinks, drops out of school and is overweight, it can be difficult to identify the impact of one specific unhealthy behavior.
Instead, the researchers turned to the natural experiment. Some people carry mutations(变异) in their DNA that increase(食欲) or make them more likely to put on weight, so researchers were able to compare those programmed to eat more with those who were not. The research team also found specific mutations in human DNA that alter lifespan (寿命).
●Mutations in a gene (a set of instructions in DNA) that is involved in running the immune system could add seven months of life on average.
●People with a mutation that increased levels of bad cholesterol knocked eight months off lifespan.
●A rare mutation in a gene—APOE—linked to dementia reduced lifespan by 11 months.
●And one that made smoking more appealing cut lives by five months.
Dr Joshi says that while genes do influence lifespan, “you’ve got even more influence” through the choices you make. Dr Joshi said, “We hope to discover genes affecting lifespan to give us new information about ageing and construct treatment tor ageing.”
There are also some disease mutations that clearly affect lifespan and to destructive effect, such as the Huntington’s gene. People with Huntington’s often die in their 20s.
However, in order to follow people until the end of their lives, many of the people studied were born before 1940.
1.What is the most difficult for the researchers to find?
A. The differences in people’s genetic code.
B. The reasons why people put on weight very easily.
C. The results of many natural and massive experiments.
D. One bad behaviour’s effect on people with many bad behaviours.
2.Which of the following mutations affects lifespan most greatly?
A. One linked to controlling immune system.
B. One increasing unhealthy cholesterol.
C. One called APOE involved in dementia.
D. One making smoking more attractive.
3.What’s the meaning of Dr Joshi’s study?
A. To help stop mutations. B. TO find diseases earlier.
C. TO make people live longer. D. TO reduce the effects of genes.
4.Why did researchers mainly study people born before 1940?
A. To follow them until they die. B. TO educate them an extra year.
C. To show they are more important. D. To make them live happier.
