People who grow up left-handed have a different, more flexible brain structure than those born to take life by the right hand, say researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The reason is that right-handers have genes that force their brains into a slightly more one-sided structure, according to the research. Left-handers appear to be missing those genes.
"There really is a difference in brains that results in a more symmetric (对称的) brain in left-handers, where the two sides are more equal," said Daniel Geschwind, who led the research team.
In the effort to understand how the brain shapes the mind, researchers have been trying to document the way genes and environment affect intelligence and mental abilities. They found that right-and left-handedness is determined by genetics. If a person has the gene for right-handedness, that person will be right-handed. People who do not have that gene, however, can be either left- or right-handed. There is no specific gene for left-handedness.
Right-handers typically have a larger left brain, where their language abilities are concentrated. Conversely, left-handers have more balanced brains. The language abilities of left-handers more often, are concentrated on the right side.
The UCLA researchers conducted brain scans on 72 pairs of male identical (同卵双生的) twins between 75 and 85 years old. They noticed that if identical twins carry the gene for hand preference, both must be right-handed. If they lack the gene, one twin can develop right-handed while the other can develop left- handed.
The researchers found that the brains of identical right-handed twins were very similar in size and structure. But when a left-hander was part of the twin set, the brains were different. The conclusion, researchers said, is that the absence of the gene for hand preference allows the brain to develop differently as the individual grows up.
1.What is the finding of the researchers of UCLA?
A.Left-handers have more balanced brains. B.Right-handers have more flexible brains.
C.Left-handers' brains are more one- sided. D.Right-handers' brains are more symmetric.
2.Which element determines a person's hand preference?
A.Environment. B.Intelligence.
C.Habit. D.Gene.
3.What can be said about identical twins?
A.They always have similar brain structure.
B.They never carry the gene for hand preference.
C.They have different genes for hand preference.
D.They can have different hand preference.
4.What did the UCLA team research on?
A.People's genetic makeup. B.People's hand preference.
C.People's brain sizes. D.People's communicative skills.

Be careful of those solid gold pieces of advice. The friend who advises you to, say, stay in your relationship or leave your job may well be looking out for you; but she' s inescapably looking out for herself, too, whether she realises it or not.
Moreover, research suggests that people will generally advise you to act more cautiously than they would act themselves in a similar situation — perhaps because they don’t want to feel guilty if you take a daring leap and fall flat on your face.
There's a happy side to this, though, for parents, teachers, managers and anyone else who finds themselves in the position of needing to motivate others: far better than giving them advice is to give them the opportunity to give advice. A new study found that American middle-school pupils were much more enthusiastic about doing their homework after giving advice on the topic to younger children, as compared with after receiving advice from teachers. This motivational effect lasted weeks, and was also observed among adults who were attempting to lose weight, save money, control their temper or find a job. This result isn’t all that surprising, 1 suppose, when you consider how happy it feels to be invited to give advice. Faced with a challenge, we tend to assume we need to seek advice in order to obtain more knowledge about how to give advice; yet the truth, very often, is that we know exactly what we need to do — we just lack the confidence to do it.
This, by the way, is another good reason to keep a journal: you can use it to advise yourself. Your friends may have limited patience with your habit of lecturing them on their lives in order to feel better about your own, but a leather-effect notebook never complains.
Finally, this is a reminder that there are few bigger compliments (恭维) you can pay another person than to ask for their advice. Benjamin Franklin famously observed that to flatter (奉承) someone, it’s better to ask for a favour than to perform one: the favour-doer will come to think of you as the likable sort for whom they do favours.
1.Why should you be careful of those solid gold pieces of advice?
A.They may be practical.
B.They may be rewarding.
C.They may be demanding.
D.They may be conservative.
2.The examples in Paragraph 3 suggest that people giving advice .
A.become more motivated to act
B.should turn to others for advice
C.are superior to the professionals
D.usually lack relevant knowledge
3.What does the author want to convey by mentioning Benjamin Franklin?
A.Keeping a journal is a good habit.
B.You should be polite to the favour-doers.
C.You should be patient with your listeners.
D.Asking for a favour pleases the favour-doers.

Want to live longer? Win an Oscar.
A new study says that actors who received the award earn more than larger paychecks.
So when 94-year-old Katharine Hepburn once remarked that she was respected internationally “like an old building”, she had no idea that her four Oscars directly influenced her longevity(长寿).
The study says winning actors will live 3.9 years longer than their losing counterparts (对手). Actors who have won more than once, like Hepburn, live up to six years longer than those who were nominated (提名) but never won.
“We found that they died from the same things we all die from—cancer, heart disease, but they fought them a bit longer and diseases came a bit later,” says Dr. Donald Redelmeier, the leading author of the study. Redelmeier says the sense of success and satisfaction makes one’s soul become more full of life.
“We are not saying that you will live longer if you win an Oscar,” explains Redelmeier, “or that people should go out and take acting courses. Our main conclusion is simply that social factors are important.” The study’s implied conclusion, he says, is that doctors should ask about their patients’ personal feelings because mental well-being is related to physical health.
Redelmeier says he got the idea for the study when he watched a glowing Gwyneth Paltrow win an Oscar in 1999 for her role in Shakespeare in Love. Redelmeier says, “She looked more full of life than anyone I had seen.”
“We found, too, those that had multi-nominations and no win had the same life expectancy as those with just a single nomination and no win,” Redelmeier adds.
1.The longevity of Oscar winners mainly has something to do with___________.
A. the big money that was awarded
B. mental factors
C. rich and colorful lives
D. respect from others and better treatment
2.Tom had five Oscar nominations but win no Oscar and Peter had only one nomination and won no Oscar either. We can tell__________.
A. Tom probably will have a longer life than Peter.
B. Peter probably will have a longer life than Tom
C. Both Tom and Peter probably will have the same life expectancy
D. Both Tom and Peter probably will have a long life.
3.According to the passage, we know __________.
A. When Katharine Hepburn was 94, she knew her long life had something to do with her 4 Oscar prizes
B. In general the number of Oscar prizes has nothing to do with a person’s life expectancy.
C. That Gwyneth Paltrow’s full of life made Redelmeier decide to do the study.
D. If you want to live a happy and long life, you should take acting courses and win Oscars.
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Most Oscar Winners Live Longer Lives
B. How to Get a Long Life
C. A New Study about Long Lives
D. An Amazing Finding

Teens and preteens who start the school day really early tend to weigh slightly more than those who start later. That’s the finding of a new study of nearly 30, 000 Canadians between the ages of 10 and 18. These data are the latest evidence that starting school too early can harm health.
“We know from earlier studies that when school starts too early, kids can’t get the sleep they need,” says Genevieve Gariepy. She works at Mcgill University in Montreal, Canada. Getting too little sleep can put kids at risk for a number of problems. Sleepy teens are more likely to be overweight, to have trouble concentrating and to struggle in school. They also are at higher risk of feeling depressed, using alcohol or drugs and getting in car accidents.
As an epidemiologist (流行病学家), Gariepy is interested in patterns of disease. She studies teen obesity,or extreme overweight. In this study, she wanted to know how earlier school start times might be linked to weight.
“Overweight and obesity in adolescents is a big problem in North America,” she says. The number of overweight kids has grown over the past 30 years. About one in three U. S. and Canadian teens are now overweight or obese. Kids who don’t sleep enough may be at higher risk. So Gariepy decided to find more about the impact of school start times.
Her team collected start times of 362 Canadian schools and found that among “6 to 10” graders, those who started school earlier tended to be slightly heavier for their height. Every 10-minute delay in school start time was linked, on average, to a slightly lower weight among students who were the same sex, age and height. But it’s not clear that changing school start time would help heavier kids lose weight. To know for sure, researchers would want to compare the same kids before and after changing to a later school start time.
1.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the main topic.
B.To show concern for teenagers
C.To show the importance of the study.
D.To offer advice on school starting time.
2.What does Gariepy want to find out in her research?
A.How to rid adolescents of being overweight.
B.The links between school start times and teen obesity.
C.Why more and more students are becoming obese.
D.The most suitable sleep time for school students.
3.What can we infer about the study of Gariepy and her team?
A.A 10-minute delay is enough. B.Schools may value its conclusion.
C.Its conclusion is reliable. D.More work remains to be done
4.What can be a suitable title of this text?
A.Experts Worry about the Health of Adolescents.
B.Overweight Becomes Common among teenagers.
C.Study Links Weight to School Starting Time.
D.Students Tend to Sleep Less Than Before.

Dear editor,
I’m sorry to occupy your precious time, and I really want to tell you anything about the problem of some people keeping too many pets nowadays.I take the problem more and more seriously for the following reason.First of all,as it is known to people, pets make loud noise that trouble residents a lot. What’s more,it is widely accepted that animal waste pollutes the environment, where makes people quite uncomfortable. Many owners like taking their pets to public place where they may frighten children or even bite people. The mostly important is that pets can spread some diseases and this has attracted much attention.Take all these factors into consideration,I sincerely hope that I can get help from you and expect the media do something for this.
Yours truly,
Wang Lin
