Kendall Ciesemier is the founder of charity Kids Caring 4 Kids, an organization she created after seeing a show on the difficult situation of AIDS orphans (孤儿) in Africa. Ciesemier was inspired to try to change the lives of those affected by AIDS and to encourage other children to do the same. She tells us of the power her personal story has in showing others they too can make a difference.
You saw Oprah’s show on AIDS orphans when you were 11 — do you remember how you felt?
When I saw the show I was shocked. I had never heard of AIDS before and was concerned that kids were growing up without parents and no one had troubled to ask for my help.
I wanted to create a place for kids to get involved and a place where their small contributions would be valued and celebrated. I also felt that I needed to take immediate action myself. I found an orphan sponsorship (赞助) program online and an eight-year-old girl from Mauritania who needed my help. I started there and Kids Caring 4 Kids grew from that experience.
How has your own illness inspired you to help others?
Growing up with a rare liver (肝脏) disease made me feel different, which I think attracted me to others who were different and those struggling with something. I knew how I felt and I wanted to help reduce that feeling in someone else. I always wanted to support people. Growing up with an illness gave me empathy (移情) for others.
How does your own story inspire others?
My own personal story is evidence that people can give from anywhere. I started Kids Caring 4 Kids from a hospital room. I started by helping one person and it snowballed from there. When I share my story, I think that’s what affects people the most — the fact that I started all of this during a time of personal struggle and weakness. If I could do that, then they can do something too.

The 1980s was called the “Me Decade” because for many this time was marked by a fascination with the self. The idea that each person has a self may seem natural to us, but this concept is actually quite new. The idea that each human life is unique developed between the 11th and 15th centuries in Europe. Before that time, individuals were considered in relation to a group, and even today, many eastern cultures place more emphasis on the importance of a collective self than on a unique and independent self.
Both eastern and western cultures see the self as divided into an inner, private self and an outer, public self. But where they differ is in terms of which part is seen as the “real you.” Western culture tends to promote the idea of individuality—a self that is separated from other selves. In contrast, many eastern cultures focus on an inter-independent self that gets its diversity in large part from inter-relationship with others.
For example, a Confucian(孔子) idea stresses the importance of “face”—other people’s views of the self and keeping up one’s desired status in their eyes. In the past, some Asian cultures developed clear rules about the specific clothes and even colors that people in certain social classes and occupations were allowed to display, and these live on today in Japanese style manuals. This style of dress is at odds with such western practices as “casual Fridays,” which encourage employees to dress informally and express their unique selves.
1. According to the passage , what does the author believe about the self?
A. Many eastern cultures see the self connected with others.
B. Those born in the 1980s are generally most self-centered than others.
C. The concept that each person has a self may seem strange to eastern cultures
D. Western cultures regard the self as an outer, public self while eastern cultures don’t.
2. What does the 2nd paragraph mainly talk about?
A. How eastern and western cultures see the self.
B. Eastern cultures contrast sharply with western cultures
C. Both eastern and western cultures appreciate the importance of self
D. Eastern cultures are as important as western cultures
3. A Japanese dress code is mentioned in the last paragraph to _________.
A. explain the importance of “face” B. say how traditional the Japanese are
C. emphasize the importance of eastern cultures
D. show how eastern cultures see the self in relation to others
4. The underlined phrase “at odds with” most probably means_______.

The CCU(Charity Cycling UK) recently called on to raise awareness(觉察,意识) of dooring after discovering that many people don't know what it is. Dooring is when a driver or passenger opens the door into another road user(typically cyclist) without looking for other road users.
The CCU chief officer Paul told Glou Live: ''Some people seem to see car dooring as a bit of a joke, but it's not and can have serious results. We want to see great awareness made about the dangers of opening your car door carelessly, and people to be encouraged to look before they open. '' Among the 3,000 injuries, 2,009 were cyclists, resulting in five deaths but this might not be the whole of the danger. Not all car dooring incidents will be attended by police, so the CCU has written to call for a public awareness campaign urging(敦促) all car users, not just drivers, to look before opening vehicle doors.
One of the ways the CCU suggests is the ''Dutch reach'', where people leaving a vehicle reach over and use the non-door side hand to open the door. In the Netherlands they are known for practicing a method, known sometimes as the ''Dutch reach'', which we think could be successfully encouraged in the UK. If you're really concerned about opening a door into the path of a cyclist coming behind you, consider using what’s known as the ''Dutch reach'' to open the door. That will naturally turn you in your seat and give you a much better view of what's coming up alongside in the car.
1.Why does the writer mention the figures in Paragraph 2?
A.To cause public concern. B.To report the terrible accidents.
C.To stress the importance of traffic safety. D.To show the danger of car dooring.
2.While doing the ''Dutch reach'', you should _____.
A.use the left hand to open the car door B.open the car door politely
C.use the inside hand to open the door D.sit in your seat
3.What can be learned from the passage?
A.Drivers are to blame for dooring incidents.
B.Many people ignore the car dooring.
C.Dooring incidents are all attended by police.
D.The ''Dutch reach'' is well received in England.

The problem of robocalls (自动语言电话) has gotten so bad that many people now refuse to pick up calls from numbers they don't know. By next year, half of the calls we receive will be scams(欺诈).We are finally waking up to the seriousness of the problem by supporting and developing a group of tools, apps and approaches intended to prevent scammers from getting through. Unfortunately, It’s too little, too late. By the time these "solutions" become widely available, scammers will have moved into cleverer means. In the near future, it's not just going to be number you see on your screen that will be in doubt. Soon you will also question whether the voice you're hearing is actually real.
That's because there are a number of powerful voice processing and automation technologies that are about to become widely available for anyone to use. At this year's I/O Conference, a company showed a new voice technology able to produce such a persuasive human-sounding voice that it was able to speak to a receptionist and book a reservation without being found.
These developments are likely to make our current problems with robocalls much worse. The reason why robocalls are a headache has less to do with amount than accurateness. A decade of data violation of personal information has led to a solution where scammers can easily learn your mother's name, and far more. Armed with this knowledge, they're able to carry out individually targeted campaigns to cheat people. This means, for example, that a scammer could call you from what looks to be a familiar number and talk to you using a voice that sounds exactly like your bank teller's, tricking you into "confirming" your address, mother's name, and card number. Scammers follow money, so companies will be the worst hit. A lot of business is still done over the phone, and much of it is based on trust and existing relationships. Voice processing technologies may weaken that gradually.
We need to deal with the insecure nature of our telecom networks. Phone consumers need to work together to find ways of determining and communicating what is real. That might mean either developing a uniform way to mark videos and images, showing when and who they were made by, or abandoning phone calls altogether and moving towards data-based communications-using apps like FaceTime or WhatsApp, which can be lied to your identity.
Reliability is hard to earn but easy to lose, and the problem is only going harder from now on.
1.How does the author feel about the solutions to the problem of robocalls?
A.Panicked.
B.Confused.
C.Embarrassed.
D.Disappointed.
2.Taking advantage of the new technologies, scammers can____________?
A.aim at victims accurately
B.damage databases easily
C.start campaigns rapidly
D.spread information widely
3.What does the passage want to say______________?
A.Honesty is the best quality.
B.Technologies can be double-edged.
C.There are more solutions than problems.
D.Reliability holds the key to development.
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Where the Problem of Robocalls Is Rooted
B.Who is to Blame for the Problem of Robocalls
C.Why Robocalls Are About to Get More Dangerous
D.How Robocalls Are Affecting the World of Technology
