One of the most successful singers of the twentieth century, Ella Fitzgerald has made several different styles of her own. She was born in Virginia but was brought up in an orphanage in Yonkers, New York. Chick Webb spotted her in an amateur competition when she was sixteen. He engaged her to sing with his band and when he died in 1939, she took over.
Unlike Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald taught herself the sentimental music so popular in the 1930’s — songs like “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”— and her recordings became best-sellers. During the 1940’s she developed her own “scat singing” — a breathless, nonsense—syllable style—for songs like “Flying Home” and “Lady Be Good.”
Ella Fitzgerald was the perfect musical partner for her friend, the trumpeter Louis Armstrong, matching him in warmth and artistry. “I just like music, period,” she said. “To me, it’s a story. There’s only one thing better than singing…. It’s more singing.”
1.What does the passage mainly discuss?

Clara Barton, born on Christmas in 1821, is widely known as one of the most honored women in American history. She began teaching school when most teachers were men at that time. Later, she became one of the first women ever to be employed by the government.
Her career in helping the sick began when her brother David became her first patient. He fell down from the roof of a house when Clara was just 11 years old. She stayed by his side and looked after him for three years, learning how to give him all his medicines.
When the Civil War began in 1861, she immediately recognized that the poorly equipped soldiers needed help. After the Battle of Cedar Mountain in northern Virginia in 1862, Clara arrived at a field hospital at midnight with a vehicle full of supplies. A doctor named Paul Smith at that hospital would later write, “I thought heaven had sent out an angel that night — her assistance arrived at exactly the right time.”
In 1869, Clara went to Europe and learned about the International Committee of the Red Cross. Upon her return to the United States, she successfully founded the American Red Cross. Alton Towers is the most famous theme park in the UK which has been successfully running since 1980. The park is set high in the hills of Alton in Staffordshire and it is hidden amongst the trees.
The buying up of the theme park has caused more and more money to be put into the park which is only good for thrill (兴奋) seekers! The amount of new rides is increasing but at the expense of the admittance fees. However the higher fees by no means stops people from visiting though with still around 2.5 million visitors each year.
The theme park is open this year from the 17th March through until 11th November. This gives riders the nice hot British summer time to enjoy the rides with preferably less rainfall. The gates to the park open at 9:30 am and the rides and other attractions open at 10 am. To make the most of your money and your day I would suggest getting there on time or it will seem wasted. When I went we got there at around 1 o’clock and because of that we didn’t get around everything we wanted to.
The cost of getting into the park these days is very expensive so trips there I think for most families would be few and far between. There are many different prices as the cost changes depending on how you pay and when you want to go. There are three sets of prices, normal day ticket, event day ticket and buying online.
