Rumors (摇言) are not always nasty, but they can be especially annoying when the rumormonger spreads something against you. Unfortunately, you can’t just stop nasty rumors just by telling one person it isn’t true. 1. However, there are better ways to handle rumors. Simply apply the tips below and see which ones suit you best:
Clear the air
Set things straight.2. That is definitely more effective than just telling one person about it.
Confront the source
Go after the rumormonger in the first place. Most gossip starters don’t really expect people to come after them, so you’ll have the element of surprise. However, don’t attack that person physically or otherwise. Simply approach that person and tell him that he has it all wrong. It’s best to do this when you’re in a room full of people.3..
Ignore it
4. Rumors come and go. Most of the time, it dies down and a new issue takes its place. If the rumor isn’t all that bad and doesn’t really affect you in any way, perhaps it’s better to let this one slide.
5.

A. Tell your boss
B. Turn to your best friend
C. If it were that easy, rumors wouldn’t be such a problem
D. You should do something to make the situation better for you
E. Some people simply choose to ignore the rumor spread about them
F. Arrange a formal meeting to address the issue with many more people
G. Thus, others will also hear the truth and the rumor starter won’t go on

Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, but they might even be more dirty than their gasoline-powered cousins.
People in California love to talk about “zero-emissions (排放) vehicles”, but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fire to make it. Apart from the few people who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by something----usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal (地热) plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.
In other words, those “zero-emissions” cars are likely coal-burning cars. Because the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not true. It's as if the California Greens are covering their eyes----“If I can't see it, it's not happening.” Gasoline is an incredibly (极其) efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat--at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.
A gallon of gas may drive your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far---so electric cars burn more fuel than gasoline-powered ones. If our electricity came mostly from wind or geothermal, or solar, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we don't use much of those energy sources.
In addition, electric cars' batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill (垃圾填埋场). And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it's a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.
1.Which of the following words can replace “be clueless about” in Paragraph 2?
A. be familiar with. B. fail to understand.
C. be curious about. D. show their interest in.
2.The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run _________.
A. at least 25 miles B. more than 25 miles
C. less than 25 miles D. as far as 25 miles
3.In the author’s opinion, compared with cars using gas, electric cars are more __________.
A. harmful B. expensive
C. efficient D. environmentally-friendly
4.It can be inferred from the passage that __________.
A. electric cars’ batteries are no longer poisonous in the landfill
B. electric cars are not clean since we get electricity mainly by burning something
C. zero-emissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment
D. now electric cars are used more than their gasoline-powered cousins

People want to get ahead when they are working in office, but not everyone can reach the goal.Let’s read the passage and we believe you can understand something useful for your working in the office.
A is for always getting to work on time.
B is for being very busy.
C is for the conscientious (勤勤恳恳) way you do your job .
You may be all these kinds of people at the office, and even more. But when it comes to getting ahead, some experts say, the ABCs above are not enough, a P should be included, for P—politics, as in office politics.
Dale Carneigie suggested much about office politics(策略) more than 90 years ago: Hard work alone doesn’t ensure career advancement. You have to be able to sell yourself and your ideas, both publicly and behind the scenes.Yet, in spite of the obvious rewards of engaging in office politics, a better job, a raise, praise, but many people are still unable or unwilling to “play the game.”
“People think that office politics involves some manipulative (工于心计的) behavior, ” says Deborah Comer , an assistant professor of management at Hofstra University.“But politics comes from the word ‘polite’.It can also mean controlling and forming associations (交往).It can mean being kind and helpful, or even trying to please your boss, and then expecting something in return.”
In fact, today, experts explain office politics as proper behavior used to go after one’s own self-interest in the workplace. In many cases, this involves some forms of socializing within the office environment—not just in large companies, but in small workplaces as well.
“The first thing people are usually judged on is their ability to perform well on their work,” says Neil P.Lewis, a management psychologist.“But if two or three candidates (候选人) are up for a position, each of whom has reasonably similar ability, a manager is going to choose the person he or she likes best to get ahead. It’s simple human nature.
Yet, psychologists say, many employees and employers have trouble with the concept of politics in the office. Some people, they say, have an idealistic vision of work and what it takes to succeed.Still others connect office politics with flattery (奉 承) , fearful that, if they speak up for themselves, they may appear to be flattering their boss for favors.
Experts suggested that office politics should be the need for some self-promotion (晋升).
1.The underlined “Office politics” in (Para 5) is used in the passage to refer to ______.
A.the habit of getting to work on time.
B.the political views and beliefs of office workers.
C.the interpersonal relationships within a company.
D.the various qualities required for a successful career.
2.Why are many people unwilling to “play the game ”(Para.6)?
A.They believe that doing so is not polite.
B.They feel that such behavior is unprincipled(不道德的.)
C.They do like the manipulating workmates.
D.They think the effort will get them nothing.
3.The author considers office politics to be _______.
A.unwelcome at the workplace.
B.bad for interpersonal relationships.
C.impossible to the development of company culture.
D.an important factor for personal advancement.
4.It is the experts’ view that _______.
A.speaking up for oneself is part of human nature.
B.office politics is necessary to self-advancement.
C.hard work is of little importance to one’s promotion.
D.all employees can recognize the need for flattery.

Computers might not be clever enough to trick adults into thinking they are intelligent yet, but a new study, led by Javier' Movellan at the University of Califomia San Diego, shows that a giggling (咯咯笑的) robot is clever enough to get toddlers (初学走路者) to treat it as a peer (同龄人).
The researchers stationed a 2-foot-tall robot Called QRIO in a classroom of a dozen toddlers aged between 18 months and two years. QRIO stayed in the middle of the room using its sensors (传感器) to avoid bumping (碰撞) into the kids. It was programmed to giggle when the kids touched its head, to occasionally sit down, and to lie down when its batteries died.
"We expected that after a few hours, the magic was going to disappear," Movellan says. "That's what was found with earlier robots." But, in fact, the kids remained interested in the robot over several weeks, eventually communicating with QRIO in much the same way they did with other toddlers.
The researchers measured the relationship between the children and the robot in several ways. Firstly, as with other toddlers, they touched QRIO mostly on the arms and hands, rather than on the face or legs. For this age group, "the amount of touching is a good predictor of how you are doing as a social being," Movellan says.
The children helped the robot up when it fell, and when QRIO's batteries ran out and it lay down, a toddler would come up and cover it with a blanket and say "night, night". However, when QRIO was programmed to spend all its time dancing, the kids quickly lost interest. When the robot went back to its old self, the kids treated it like a peer again.
"The study shows that current technology is very close to being able to produce robots able to develop a special relationship with toddlers," says Movellan. But, he adds, it is not clear yet whether robots can interest older children or adults in the same way.
1.What does the underlined word "stationed" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Hid. B. Observed. C. Placed. D. Named.
2.At the beginning of the experiment, researchers ________.
A. feared that the robot would harm the toddlers
B. programmed the robot to move freely about the classroom
C. expected the robot to communicate with the toddlers
D. thought the toddlers' interest in the robot wouldn't last long
3.Kids aged between 18 months and two years behave
