Researchers have discovered the first Earth-sized planet. It was first marked by scientists' using NASA's Kepler telescope(望远镜), so it's called Kepler﹣186f. It lies about 500 light years from Earth and goes around its star. The planet is the right distance from its star for water: not too close or not too far. Water is one important condition that scientists guess is necessary for life. So it could have water and possible life. It's called a true Earth cousin.
"This planet is an Earth cousin, not an Earth twin," said Barclay, who is among a team of scientists reporting on the discovery in the magazine Science this week.
"It's very exciting to find a planet similar to the Earth,"Barclay said. "It's not easy work because things change as we get more measurements."
Scientists don't know anything about the air of Kepler﹣186f, but it will be a task for future telescopes which can study for chemicals that have something to do with life.
"It's possible for life to live in this planet, but that doesn't mean there is life in it," Barclay said.
So far, scientists have found nearly 1,800 planets in the universe.
"The past year has seen a lot of progress in the search for Earthlike planets. Kepler﹣186f is very important because it is the first planet that is the same temperature and is almost the same size as Earth,"scientist David Charbonneau wrote in an email.
1.Scientists have already found about ________ planets now.
A. 500 B. 186 C. 1,800 D. 1,801
2.Which of the following about Kepler﹣186f is NOT true according to the passage?
A. It could have water and possible life, so perhaps we might live there.
B. It's almost as hot as and as large as Earth.
C. In the future, scientists will study the chemicals of it by telescope.
D. It's an Earth﹣like planet.
3.What is the best title of the passage?
A. Space research
B. Journey to space
C. Is there water and possible life in Kepler﹣186f?
D. Scientists discover the most Earth-like planet

Do you know that you have “body amour(防弹衣)”? Yes, you do. 1. Here are three protective body parts and how they work.
Skin
Your skin might not feel much like the outside of an armoured tank, but it really gives you a lot of protection. 2. Skin also protects our bones, muscles and insides by covering them up. Our skin may not be that tough when we touch it, but it can be very tough when it counts. 3. The skin may get scraped(擦伤)and become bruised(青肿的), but it helps to keep our bones safe so that they don't break easily.
Eyelashes(眼睫毛)and Eyelids
The little soft eyelashes attached to our eyelids are constantly working to blink(眨眼)away dust that would hurt our eyes. Our eyelashes and eyelids use reflex actions to close when danger comes near. Actually if we had to tell our eyelids to close, we could not do it fast enough to offer any real protection for our eyes. When our eyes and brain notice something that might be dangerous, they use lightening fast reflexes to close. 4..
Hair
5. This is a kind of body amour that is very useful, since the sun shines down on our heads all day. Without this covering of hair it would be easy for us to get sunburnt on the top of our heads. We lose about 50 individual hairs from our scalp every day. But most of us have lots of new ones that are replacing them.
A. Think about what happens when we fall.
B. This protection keeps our eyes safe and sound.
C. But you might not know how the armour works.
D. Some of your personal armour might affect you.
E. The hair on our heads protects our soft scalps(头皮).
F. By closing eyes, your eyelashes block out light closer to you.
G. Our skin is the biggest organ in our entire body and it helps to keep us safe.

You may have noticed that the world′s population is not evenly distributed(分布) around our planet. There are some countries where people seem to be living nearly on top of each other because conditions are overcrowded. Then there are others where it seems that hardly anybody lives. What influences this unequal distribution of people? There are specific advantages and disadvantages of *diving in a certain area.
The two main factors that influence people`s choice of location are climate and resources. Climate is the usual weather conditions in a region. Areas that have bad weather are generally less deal as places to live in. The north and south poles at the top and bottom of the world may be beautiful in their rugged, natural way, but the disadvantage of the bitterly cold and windy conditions usually keeps people away. When it comes to climate, warm conditions and a normal amount of rainfall are advantages that attract people.
Natural resources are things that we get from nature that help us survive. Each region offers different resources, and therefore attracts different groups of people. People who enjoy the beach can make their living by catching and selling the ocean′s many fish and other sea creatures. Those who prefer farming can take advantage of rich soil(土壤) in valleys near rivers. Some people are willing to accept the disadvantages of the terrible conditions of deserts or mountains in order to take advantage of the resources like oil or woods.

It’s reported that scientists in London have found the best diet for both humans and the planet.
If the world followed the so-called “planetary health” diet, each year more than ll million early deaths could be avoided according to the scientists. For the health of the planet, they say the same diet will reduce (减少) greenhouse gases and save more land, water and animals. This new food plan is the result of a three-year project organized by The Lancet health journal.
Tim Lang, a professor at Britain’s University of London. He said, “The food we eat and how we produce it decide the health of people and the planet.” Lang added, The world’s population is expected to grow to 10 billion people by 2050. If we want to feed everyone, we all need to change what we eat and the way we eat by improving food production and reducing food waste”. So, what do you eat on the “planetary health” diet?
The scientists who created the “planetary health” diet say it is largely plant-based but still has a little milk, fish and meat. The diet calls for cutting down red meat and sugar by 50 percent and increasing nuts, fruits, and vegetable.
Walter Willet of Harvard University in the United States also talked about the “planetary health” diet. He said, “More than 800 million people around the world do not get enough food while many more people have very unhealthy diets.”
The scientists think it difficult to reach their aim. But for them, doing nothing is also not a choice Willet said, “If we can’t make the best diet, it’s better to try and get as close as we can.”
1.What decides the health of people and the planet according to Tim Lang?
A.The taste of the food.
B.The number of population.
C.The climate and our living conditions.
D.The food we eat and the way we produce it.
2.What does the “planetary health” diet mainly contain?
A.Milk. B.Meat.
C.Sugar. D.Plants.
3.What do scientists say about the “planetary health” diet?
A.It is very easy to produce it.
B.It is better to try their best to make it.
C.It is better to do nothing than fail.
D.It is impossible to make it.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.Humans Health Is Very Important.
B.Many People don’t Get Enough Food.
C.A New Kind of diet may Save the Plane.
D.Different People have Different Eating Habits.

Scientists have discovered a special biological behavior in dolphins(海豚) that could lead to a treatment for late-onset diabetes(晚发的糖尿病) in humans. Studies on dolphins found that healthy dolphins switch into a diabetic-like state overnight when they are not feeding, but return to normal when they eat the following morning.
The extraordinary finding has led scientists to suggest that dolphins have “genetic switch” that allows them to imitate diabetes while they are not feeding for a night, without suffering any ill effect.
If researchers can identify a similar genetic pathway in human, they may be able to develop drugs to effectively switch off diabetes. Some 2.2 million people in Britain have type 2 (or late-onset) diabetes, a figure that is expected to reach 4 million by 2025 as a consequence of rising levels of obesity(肥胖).
The tissues of people with type 2 diabetes have become resistant to insulin(胰岛素)so they lose the ability to control sugar levels in their blood. The condition can damage the heart, eyes, kidneys(肾脏) and nerves and contribute to 5% of all deaths, according to the World Healthy Organisation.
Dolphins appear to imitate diabetes to keep high levels of blood sugar when food is rare. Like humans, dolphins need some sugar in their blood for their brains to function normally. Venn-Watson’s team analysed 1,000 blood samples(样本) from 52 dolphins while they didn’t eat anything overnight and fed in the morning. At night time, the dolphins’ metabolism(新陈代谢)changed greatly and showed similar characteristics to that seen in people with type 2 diabetes.
“It is our hope that this discovery can lead to new ways to prevent, treat and maybe even cure diabetes in humans,” said Stephanie Venn-Watson, director of clinical research at the National Marine Foundation in San Diego.
1.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Humans get some idea of treating diabetes from dolphins.
B. Dolphins can switch into a diabetic-like state overnight.
C. Humans can suffer the same disease as dolphins.
D. Dolphins should be fed regularly to avoid diabetes.
2.The key to applying the finding to curing human diabetes lies in ____________.
A. producing insulin in a larger amount
B. developing drugs from healthy dolphins
C. identifying a similar genetic pathway in human
D. analysing more blood samples from hungry dolphins
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Scientists have found a similar genetic switch in humans.
B. More British people will suffer type 2 diabetes due to obesity.
C. 2.2 million people with type 2 diabetes die in Britain every year.
D. Dolphins imitate diabetes to avoid a high blood sugar level.
4.What will happen to dolphins if not fed for a night according to Venn-Watson?
A. Their metabolism breaks down.
B. They become resistant to insulin.
C. Their heart and kidneys are damaged.
D. They keep high levels of blood sugar.
