Two young giant-panda twins born in the United States have returned home to China, but are struggling to adapt to the language and food.
The 3-year-old sisters, Mei Lun and Mei Huan, were the first surviving panda twins to be born in the United States, and were returned to China from Zoo Atlanta on Nov. 5. But the pair still understand English better than Chinese, and prefer American biscuits to Chinese bread.
A zoo-keeper said that his main concern is that the pair are so addicted to American biscuits that everything they eat—from bamboos to apples—has to be mixed with biscuits. They even want to snack on (零食) biscuits when drinking water.
The zoo-keeper is trying to wean them off their biscuit habit, gradually replacing the American food with Chinese bread. Mei Huan is adapting, but Mei Lun doesn't want to touch the unfamiliar bread.
Mei Lun is the livelier of the two, often jumping onto the roof and hanging upside down from a rail, but her slightly younger sister Mei Huan is calmer, preferring to sit still, observe her new environment and occasionally snack on bamboo.
A language barrier is also reported. While the pair respond to their own names, and
understand some English phrases such as "come here," they don't understand the Sichuan dialect of Chinese.
The news caused some laughter on Chinese social media, with some users commenting that the pandas would soon get used to Sichuan's famously spicy cuisine.
1.Based on the passage, which statement do you think is right?
A. The panda twins can fit in well in Sichuan.
B. The panda twins are only fond of Sichuan food and dishes.
C. The panda twins have been used to the new environment very quickly.
D. It's hard for the panda twins to get used to the new environment soon.
2.What does the underlined part "wean them off" in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. help them get rid of. B. help them form.
C. help them strengthen. D. help them keep.
3.From the passage we learn that of the two sisters, ________.
A. Mei Huan mainly eats bamboo
B. Mei Lun is living a more active life
C. Mei Huan is not smarter than Mei Lun
D. Mei Lun is as quiet as her younger sister

Differences in time zones complicate international phone calls. But even more important are different concepts of time and approaches to time in different cultures.
People from the USA as well as other North Americans believe “Time is money”. This value of time is rooted in their ancestors. Early in the 17th century, their ancestors arrived on the Atlantic coast, a new, undeveloped land. To survive in the tough environment, they had to struggle day and night. Time meant so much to them that they had not even one second to waste. After decades of struggle, they developed the value of efficient use of time and passed it down. Thus far, the Americans are still eager to finish things quickly and are impatient with too reflective(深思熟虑的) people.
In some countries, the American work style of speeding everything up will have no significance. In the Arab East, the more important you are, the faster service you get. Close relatives take absolute priority; non-relatives are kept waiting. In the Middle East, a deadline, which is often established to show the degree of urgency or importance of work, will do nothing but stop the Middle Easterners from working, because they consider it rude and overly demanding.
Another aspect reflecting different concepts of time is the classification of monochronic-time and polychronic-time by Edward T Hall. People from monchronic(共时性的) cultures, such as the Germans, the Austrians, the Swiss and the Americans, do only one important thing at a time. In polychromic(多元时间模式的) cultures, people such as Arab, Asians and Latin Americans take an entirely opposite approach. They do several things at once. Time commitments, e.g. deadlines, schedules, are taken rather casually and changed often and easily. Miscommuication will arise when people from two cultures contact. Charlies Hawkins, a U.S. teacher, told me that many a time his appointments with Indians were interrupted constantly, not only by private phone calls, but also by long conversations with other people and even the neighbor’s children, which displeased and even annoyed him.
1.Why did the ancestors of the North Americans believe “Time is money”?
A. They had to work efficiently to survive. B. They got the idea from their past generations.
C. They didn’t like to deal with reflective people. D. They formed the habit of finishing work ahead of time.
2.What can be concluded from Paragraph 3?
A. Deadlines will make American people angry.
B. In the Arab East, you’d better speed everything up.
C. Middle Easterners can’t deal with demanding work.
D. People from the Arab East attach importance to relationship.
3.What can we learn about people from monochronic cultures?
A. They tend to interrupt others constantly. B. They can’t tolerate lateness or interruptions.
C. They are more likely to change their schedules. D. They like to schedule several activities at the same time.
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The importance of the diversity of culture B. The relationship between efficiency and culture
C. Different time values in different cultures D. Monochronic culture and polychronic culture

“Whatever",totally tops most annoying word in the poll (民意测验).So, you know, it is what it is, but Americans are totally annoyed by the use of‘ whatever"’ in conversations. The popular term of indifference (不感兴趣)was found most annoying in conversations by 47 percent of the Americans surveyed in a Marist College poll on Wednesday.
“Whatever"easily beat out “you know",which especially annoyed a quarter of interviewers. The other annoying expressions were "anyway"(at 7 percent), “it is what it is” (11percent) and “at the end of the day(2 percent).
"Whatever" is an expression with staying power It left everyone a deep impression in the song by Nirvana (“oh well, whatever, never mind”)in 1991 and was popularized by the Valley Girls in the film “Clueless”,later that decade. It is still commonly used, often by younger people.
It can be a common argument-ender or a signal of indifference. And it can really be annoying. The poll found "whatever" to be consistently(始终地) disliked by Americans regardless of their race, sex, age, income or where they live.
“It doesn't surprise me because ‘whatever’,is in a special class, probably, said Michael Adams, author of “Slang(俚语)~The People's Poetry" and an associate professor of English at Indiana University. "It's a word that -and it depends on how a speaker uses it -can suggest being not worthy of attention or respect.” Adams, who didn't take part in the poll and is not annoyed by "whatever," points out that its use is not always negative. “It can also be used in place of other neutral(中性的)phrases that have fallen out of favor, like ‘six of one, half dozen of the other’ ” he said. However, he also noted that the negative meaning of the word might explain why “whatever” was judged more annoying than the ever-popular “you know”.
1.Which tops second among the annoying expression according to the passage?'
A. Whatever. B. You know
C. Anyway. D. It is what it is.
2.What can we know about the word "whatever"?
A. It became popular because of Nirvana.
B. It can be commonly used at the beginning of an agreement.
C. Old people like it while young people don't.
D. Almost half of the Americans surveyed disliked it.
3.In Adams' opinion, the reason why “whatever”, was judged more annoying may be that_____.
A. most of the people don't like it
B. it can be used in place of other neutral phrases
C. it carries certain negative meaning sometimes
D. the poor don't like it
4.Which of the following statements is true?
