The Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China is moving to ban teachers from assigning homework on mobile apps or asking parents to grade students’ homework as part of an effort to save students’ eyesight. Through these efforts, the overall myopia (近视) rate among teenagers reduces by more than 0.5 percentage points per year from 2019 until 2023.
Provinces with a high incidence (发生率) of myopia are required to cut at least 1 percentage point per year. By 2030, the myopia rate for 6-year-old children should be below 3 percent, for primary school students, below 38 percent, for middle school students, below 60 percent, and for high school students, below 70 percent. Along with banning app-based homework assignments, the regulation would limit the use of electronic devices to 30 percent of total teaching time and instead encourage homework to be completed by hand on paper.

The Ministry of Education said on Monday that starting this spring, a system of recycling textbooks will be established in rural primary and secondary schools, which means some textbooks will be given to students by the schools free of charge at the start of a term and be returned at the end of the school term so that they can be used by other students.
The central government will set up a fund for the purchase of these textbooks, and the students will be required to keep the books in good order for their reuse by others.
It is a heartening move with two major benefits.
First, it will lighten the financial burden on government and families. Textbook costs account for 53 percent of all the fees primary school students must pay and about 65 percent of those facing middle school students.
Second, using secondhand books is environmentally friendly because of the resources such as trees and energy that are saved. According to industry figures, producing one ton of texbook paper requires 20 trees aged between 20 to 40 years, 100 tons of water, 1.2 tons of coal and other materials and churns out 300 tons of polluted water.

The ministry of Human Resources and Social Security released a list of 100 professions that have major demand. Vacancies for sales positions, cashiers, restaurant waiters and security guards topped the list, followed by manufacturing professionals, including lathe (车床) operators, welders (电焊工) and porters, according to the ministry.
“Usually, we believe that sectors closely related to high technology face the toughest situation,” said Yin Baoming, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Labor and Social Security. “But it’s the same with low-killed jobs. They are also key.”
Lin Qing, a 23-year-old from Jiangsu province, who worked as a receptionist for a cybercafe in Beijing, quit last year and is now studying for the test to get into a vocational college.
”I felt hopeless after working for the cybercafe for almost three years,” she said. “I worked for restaurants and cafes, but none of these jobs brought me any respect or sense of dignity. I want to learn some skills through training courses. I don’t want to live a life of hard physical work anymore.”

A new regulation by China’s Ministry of Education aims to grant primary and middle school teachers more room in punishing their students in order to achieve better teaching results.
The regulation lists punishments available to teachers in three categories based on the level of severity of the offense, including naming and shaming, forced standing that lasts no longer than one class session, and suspension of class for no longer than one week.
Zhang Lifeng, a 43-year-old parent, welcomed the move. “The regulation should have come earlier,” she said. “It will benefit both teachers and students as well as parents.”
However, a ninth grader at a middle school, disagreed. “It is normal for adolescent students to make mistakes. I don’t think punishments are necessary. They may cause more trouble,” he said.
Chen Xianzhe, a professor with the School of Education at South China Normal University, said punishments are just a part of the teaching process.
The regulation asks schools to draft their own regulations accordingly to clarify the rules for teachers in taking disciplinary actions against their students.

High school students in Victoria, Australia have been offered Education Department advice ahead of their written exams. The advice has been developed by the state Education Department together with a mental health organization. “Exams can be a stressful time and the government is ensuring that students have the support they need to get through the period,” Education Minister Martin Dixon said.
Students are advised to breathe deeply through their noses as a relaxation technique, to have a healthy diet, and to improve their mood by exercising. The importance of sleep, staying connected with family and friends, and planned study times are emphasized. Students will also learn “positive self-talk”. “The positive way that you talk to yourself can be used for greater confidence and reducing stress, and can be a very effective way to prepare yourself for a big test or exam,” students are told.
