Custom tattooed fish (纹身鱼) may be big sellers at markets, but an animal expert say it is a cruel and potentially lethal practice.
In Laitai Flower and Fish Market near the Lufthansa Center in Beijing, four of over 20 fish stores sell marine ornamental fish that are tattooed using laser (激光) guns with beautiful images in order to make them more attractive to customers. Many people just love these kinds of fish, which gives them a unique visual impression. The price of these fish ranges from 50-100 yuan. Some customers are willing to pay an additional 100 yuan to have Chinese characters tattooed on to the fish. The most popular characters are “zhaocai” (attracting fortune) and “ill” (blessing). The color of tattooed fish won’t fade away, and the fish can be cared for as regular fishes:
But Ye Zhenjiang, a professor from the Ocean University of China, said “the practice would damage a fish’s mackerel scale, which is its protective layer Although I haven’t done any research on the impact of the laser on mackerel scale, it is obvious that the mackerel scale may be infected or even destroyed under the exposure of laser,” Ye said. “It’s like tattooing a human being’s body, and it breaks the physiological balance of the fish and damages: the skin’s protective surface, It may even cause death among fishes which have thin mackerel scale.”
A specialist in aquatic(永生的) animal study surnamed Xu from the Beijing Fisheries Research Institute, said, “We have no specific regulations to prevent fish from being tattooed. An official surnamed Bai from the Fishery Surveillance and Administration Bureau(FSAB), said there is no study showing that the laser threatened a fish’s health. He said a regulation on small animal protection, to be passed in the near future, doesn’t include regular aquatic animals. He said the institution is only responsible for aquatic animals that are on the verge of extinction. He said tattooed fish are mainly from south China’s Guangdong province because Beijing does not have the laser technology to tattoo a fish.
“It’s too brutal to tattoo pictures or characters on fishes, even if it makes them more beautiful,” many tropical fish buyers told METRO yesterday. “We would never buy fish like that and we prefer them with natural beauty.”

You may not be aware, but digital currency (货币) is a big part of the Internet world. QQ Coins can buy you accessories (配饰) for your QQ images. More importantly, a new digital currency, Bitcoin, is bringing the world’s commerce online.
If you’re traveling, you can spend Bitcoins at restaurants and hotels listed at BitcoinTravel.com. In China, Bitcoins can be used to buy goods at about 134 online shops on Taobao. And at a café named 2nd Place in Beijing, you can even buy fresh coffee with Bitcoins.
So what makes Bitcoin so attractive to investors?
First of all, the Bitcoin system is not controlled by anyone. One central authority cannot make policies to change the value of Bitcoins. The fixed amount of Bitcoins also means they cannot lose value through inflation(通货膨胀), as all forms of paper money have done over time.
In addition, accounts in the Bitcoin system are anonymous and transparent. Users can set up an account easily and track every Bitcoin. All of these features seem to make Bitcoins immune(有免疫力的) from loss, but that is not entirely true.
“The value of Bitcoins can vary wildly as no central government makes the price of them steady. If the value drops suddenly, investors cannot get any compensation(赔偿),” Zhao Qingming, a senior researcher at China Construction Bank, told China Economic Weekly. And Bitcoins, unlike company shares, are not backed by any tangible funds, which also adds to their risk.
While China will not recognize the digital currency anytime soon, Xinhua said, lawmakers and officials at a hearing on Nov. 18 in the US made positive comments about Bitcoin.
Ben Bernanke, outgoing chairman of the Federal Reserve, told the Washington Post that “these types of creations, such as Bitcoin… may hold long-term promise, particularly if its system promote a faster, more secure and more efficient payment system.”
1.Bitcoin is ______.
A. actually exactly like QQ Coins
B. only used online
C. a new currency used both online and in real life
D a country’s new digital currency.
2.We can use Bitcoin to buy the following things except ______.
A. online goods B. goods at 134 online shops on Taobao
C. books in physical shops D. coffee at a café named 2nd Place
3.What is the disadvantage of Bitcoin?
A. the value of it can rise and fall wildly.
B. It cannot lose value through inflation.
C. Every bitcoin in your account can be followed.
D. It can even be used at some specific restaurants and hotels.

Having a tattoo(纹身) can reduce your chance of getting a job, but it depends on where the tattoo is, what it expresses and if the job involves dealing with customers, new research says.
Dr Andrew R Timming told the British Sociological Association conference on work, employment and society in Warwick today that employers were likely to view tattoos negatively. Dr Timming of the school of Management at the University of St Andrews said he had spoken to 15 managers involved in hiring staff about their reaction to interview candidates with visible tattoos.
"Most respondents agreed that visible tattoos are a stigma," Dr Timming told the conference. One woman manager told him that "they make a person look dirty." Another male manager told him "subconsciously that would stop me from employing them." The managers were concerned about what their organisations' customers might think, said Dr Timming. "Hiring managers realise that, ultimately, it does not matter what they think of tattoos -- what really matters, instead, is how customers might think of employees with visible tattoos.
Dr Timming said: "The one qualification to this argument is there are certain industries in which tattoos may be a desirable characteristic in a job interview. For example, an HR manager at a prison noted that tattoos on guards can be 'something to talk about' and 'an in' that you need to make a connection with the prisoners."
The negative attitude to tattoos did not extend to ones that could be easily covered by clothing. Dr Timming also found that in some of the organisations it was only certain types of tattoos that diminished the chances of getting a job at interview. One male manager told him: "If it's gang culture-related you may have a different view about the tattoo than if it's just because it's a nice drawing of an animal that they've done on their arm."
1.Why do managers really refuse to hire a person with tattoos?
A. They don’t like tattoos themselves.
B. Tattoos can turn customers away.
C. People with tattoos don’t obey the rules.
D. People with tattoos are gang members.
2.A person with tattoos can probably work as ________.
A. a doorkeeper B. a salesman
C. a prison guard D. a manager
3.Who would be most likely to be turned down by employers?
A. A person who has his tattoos covered.
B. A person who has tattoos of an animal.
C. A person with a gang culture-related tattoo.
D. A person with a drawing of flowers on his arms.
4.We can infer from the last paragraph that _______.
A. not all tattoos reduce one’s chance if employment.
B. some tattoos are helpful to a job interviewee.
C. it’s no use covering one’s tattoos.
D. tattoos are hard to hide.

Tattoos (纹身) and body piercings (穿孔) have moved up on the trend list in recent years.
Around Western schools lots of teens are showing off new holes and “flesh ink” (纹身). As with all other subjects, the Chinese will surely have to deal with this situation with respect to their children. To get a better view of what has happened in the West, let’s sit down and hear what they say.
Tiara from Indiana:
I personally think body piercing is sickening. If there were supposed to be holes in your body, you would have been born with them. I do, however, think that ear piercing, is not wrong. There is a difference between ear piercing and belly button (肚脐) piercing. Ear piercing is not nearly as dangerous. I would be sick if someone stuck a needle in my belly button.
Lee from Illinois:
Hi! I live in Illinois. I am 23. I have 12 tattoos and three piercings. I love my tattoos and consider myself an art collector. You would be surprised at who has given me the thumbs-up on my art work. People on the street stop me to look at the tattoo on my leg. Most of them don’t know what it is. They just think the work itself is great.
Subotai from Califomia:
I’m not against self-expression, but when I see high school students getting these piercing, I really wonder. In some cases, the drive is deeper and darker than mere fashion. A friend of mine tried piercing her own tongue with a safety pin. It got infected and she had a tongue the size of a cow’s.
Jackson from Ohio:
I don’t think it’s wrong, but when people do it all over the place like their face and everything—I think that’s ridiculous (荒唐的). People who get the big dragons that cover their whole body—I don’t think that’s necessary. When I see naked chicks on guys, I think “You have no respect for women.”
1.We can infer from the passage that _________.
A. Tiara must have body piercing B. Subotai doesn’t have body piercing
C. Lee dislikes tattoos D. Jackson likes tattoos and piercing
2.Who doesn’t think tattoos and piercings are beautiful except ear piercing?
A. Jackson B. Lee C. Tiara D. Subotai
3.From the passage, we can make a conclusion that _________.
A. tattoos and piecrings are a new kind of art
B. all the teachers in the West are in favour of tattoos and piercings
C. everything is changeable as time goes on
D. it is necessary to live with different views of beauty
4.The best title for this passage is probably _________.
A. Body Art or Causing Damage
B. Doing Damage to the Young People’s Bodies
C. Young People’s Different Curiosities
D. The Latest Fashion

While it may be unlikely for a computer to write a best seller, a technology expert has created a computer program that writes its own fiction stories with minimal user input. The program, called MEXICA, is the first to generate original stories based on computerized representations of emotions and tensions between characters.
An Internet survey was carried out to see the popularity of the computer-generated stories, other computerized stories and stories written solely by a human. The result was that readers ranked MEXICA stories highest for flow and coherence, structure, content, suspense and overall quality. Rafael Pérezy Pérez, the creator of MEXICA, explained that a story might begin with something as basic as, “The enemy wounded the knight. The princess cured the knight. The knight killed the enemy. The knight rewarded the princess. The end.”
The program reads characters as variables (变量) and assigns a numerical value, between a continuum (连续体) from -3 to +3, to emotional connections that are defined as either amorous or non-amorous. The numerical value is equivalent to the degree of emotion, with -3 being intense hate and +3 being intense love. The program also understands story tension, such as linking the word “wounded” with tension. This too is assigned a numerical value.
Once these clusters of emotional links and tensions are established, the program begins what is called an “engagement reflection cycle”. Basically this involves searching a database of story actions and other happenings, which are called “atoms”, and determines the best match for the characters and contexts for that moment.
The process repeats itself again and again until the system can no longer make any matches. At this point, the computer analyzes the story for coherence and “interestingness”. The program views a story as interesting when tension levels increase and fall throughout the piece. If the program finds that the story is boring or incoherent in places, it will replace or insert atoms until a version is thought to be satisfactory.
1.What can we know about MEXICA from the passage?
A. It is a computer program that can write fiction stories on its own.
B. It is a computer program created by Rafael Pérezy Pérez.
C. It is blamed for low quality among many other descriptors.
D. The stories it has written is not very popular among readers.
2.What is basically needed for MEXICA to start to write a story?
A. The beginning and the end of the story should be provided.
B. The background of the story needs to be keyed in.
C. The human operator should come up with a simple storyline.
D. Emotions and tensions between characters should be determined.
3.How does the computer system describe the characters in its story?
A. Characters in the story are given different numerical values.
B. Characters are developed according to the tension preset.
C. Characters are designed by using the language MEXICA can understand.
D. Each character is valued for its value in the construction of the story.
4.What are “atoms” understood by the computer system?
A. The tensions preset for the story.
B. The characters designed for the story.
C. Episodes of action of the story.
D. Events becoming of the characters.

Watching the Northern Lights(北极光)shining on the sky’s natural canvas may be on your list already, but be prepared to up the money.
A developer is creating a floating, snowflaked - shaped(雪花形状的)glass hotel from which guests can stare in fear at the Northern Lights from their beds. The project is called Krystall. Eighty –six luxury rooms will be covered within a glass structure alongside conference rooms and a spa, all of which is only accessible by boat.
The stationery hotel will be built near in northern Norway reportedly between bays. It will be constructed, in pieces, in dry docks(码头), before being fit together on location.
Explaining the physics and design of the hotel, Koen Olthuis, Dutch architect and founder of Waterstudio, a specialist in floating structures, said: “The floating base is very big and because of that also very stable. You will not notice any movement. Different to any vessel this hotel is a floating building and will not move. The shape provides most of the stability but cables(缆绳)are used to take away any speed.”
“Same look and feel as a land based hotel but then on the most beautiful spot on the water. The hotel is not connected to land so all the things will be provided by boats.”
According to Mr Olthuis, who wouldn’t tell the actual cost of the project, the budget is 15 percent more than it would have been if it were built on land. He said that an important thing to the hotel’s construction was for its creation to be “scarless” on the perfect environment surrounding it.
“We call it a scarless development. If you take it away after a hundred years or so it will not leave any physical footprint. That is the only way to bring developments to such a valuable and beautiful marine environment in Norway.”
It is hoped that the hotel will be “self-supporting and sustainable” using top of the range technology, helping to support the “growing eco-tourism market.”
“Dutch Docklands has learned to live with the water instead of fighting it,” the firm states. “Floating houses are common in the Netherlands but we took that technology abroad and scale it up in size.”
1.According to the text, Krystall is stable because ________.
A. it is linked to the land with cables. B. it is fixed together on location.
C. it is built in the form of snow flakes. D. it has the same look as any vessel.

A. how to keep it existing for a hundred years.
B. how to cause no damage to each piece.
C. how to build it with a lot less money.
D. how to make it environmentally friendly.
3.What Mr Olthuis said in the last paragraph implies that ________.
A. The Dutch developed a sense of adapting to nature.
B. eco-tourism is a growing market in the Netherlands.
C. it needs technology to build floating houses.
D. it is common to see house floating on water.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Build a floating house to live in.
B. View the Northern Lights in a floating hotel.
C. Live with water in a glass hotel in Norway.
D. Use the Northern Lights in a glass hotel.
