The cars were honking (鸣叫) on the road one morning as I was walking to the park. I walked on and soon found the cause — a little taxi that had got stuck in the middle of the road. There was sweat on the driver's face as he tried to start the engine again and again — nothing happened. "No petrol,"
I said to myself and then found myself getting angry. "Why doesn't the fool move his taxi to the side?" I thought, so did all the others who honked and shouted.
He got up tiredly, and the passenger in the taxi got out. He was a young man in a white shirt, who watched the driver try to push it to the side. "Stupid guy!" I said. "Can't he lend a helping hand? "
I watched as the poor driver pushed it to the side. Cars, buses and trucks went past cursing (咒骂 ) the poor man. The young man took another taxi and went off.
The taxi driver began mending his taxi. "Stupid passenger!" I said to him. "He didn't help you!" The taxi driver slowly got up. "Sir!" he asked, "Did you?" I looked at him guiltily, then looked away, and walked away fast, asking myself, "Did I help the poor man push his taxi?"
What had I been doing as the traffic jam took place? How had I helped deal with the problem? Did I help the poor man push his taxi? I’d done my bit, with my mouth. But never had I moved to solve the problem. I was shocked with guilt as I heard him asking, "Sir! Did you?"

A. Because he blamed the driver wrongly.
B. Because he didn't help the driver, either.
C. Because he tried to help but failed in the end.
D. Because he didn't persuade the passenger to help.
4. From the incident, the author learnt a lesson that we should _________.
A. criticize those who don't help
B. hurt the self-respect of others no more
C. think more of those who are in need
D. stop talking and start to help

One day my two sons and I got into my old car to drive to the local post office. I backed out of my drive slowly like I normally do and then pulled to a stop at the side road that leads to the main highway. When it was clear I pulled out and stepped on the gas. As I stepped on the clutch(离合器)and tried to shift into second, though, I immediately knew that something was wrong. The normally solid gear shift(档位杆)now felt like a spoon in a bowl of soup. I tried quickly to get it to lock into any of the gears but did not succeed. Thankfully, the steering wheel(方向盘)was still working fine and I allowed the car to go to the end of the side road where I was able to pull safely into a wide spot and turn the engine off.
It was only later in the day that I finally realized how blessed I had been. I could have been on the main road when that stick shift failed. I could have been in the middle of a curve with no place to turn off the road. I could have had a car too close behind me that wouldn’t have been able to stop in time. A hundred things could have made this incident dangerous or deadly. Yet, the gear shift broken at just the right moment to keep me and my boys safe.
Far too often we only see the bad things in life. We get angry when things don’t go out way, and we fail to see the thousands of times that they do. Yes, my car broken down. Still, my sons and I are safe. We are loved. And we have been given more time here in this world to share our own love and light.

B. By turning to a local garage for help.
C. By removing the steering wheel away.

A. they were lucky enough to be safe

One early morning, I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. My interest was aroused only by the fact that the word “Poems” appeared in big, hot pink letters.
“Is it good?” I asked her.
“Yeah,” she answered. “There’s one I really like and you’ll like it, too.” I leaned forward.
“‘Patty Poem,’” she read the title. Who is Patty? I wondered. The poem began:
She never puts her toys away,
Just leaves them scattered①where they lay,…
The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly:
When she grows and gathers poise②,
I’ll miss her harum-scarum③noise,
And look in vain④for scattered toys.
And I’ll be sad.
A terrible sorrow washed over me. Whoever Patty was, she was a mean girl. Then, the shock.
“It’s you, honey,” My mother said sadly.
To my mother, the poem revealed a parent’s affection when her child grows up and leaves. To me, the “she” in the poem was horror. It was my mama who would be sad. It was so terrible I burst out crying.
“What’s wrong?” my mother asked.
“Oh Mama,” I cried. “I don’t want to grow up ever!”
She smiled. “Honey, it’s okay. You’re not growing up anytime soon. And when you do, I’ll still love you, okay?”
“Okay,” I was still weeping. My panic has gone. But I could not help thinking about that silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time, I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple, so simple I could plainly understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful. I was now fascinated by the idea of poetry, words that had the power to make or break a person’s world.
I have since fallen in love with other poems, but “Patty Poem” remains my poem. After all, “Patty Poem” gave me my love for poetry not because it was the poem that lifted my spirits, but because it was the one that hurt me the most.
1.Why was the writer attracted by the book Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again?
A. It was a thick enough book. B. Her mother was reading it with interest.
C. Something on its cover caught her eye. D. It has a meaningful title.
2.After her mother read the poem to her, the writer felt ______ at first.

C. it was composed by a famous poet D. it gave her a hint of what would happen
4.It can be concluded from the passage that “Patty Poem” leads the writer to _______.
A. discover the power of poetry B. recognize her love for puzzles
