Did you know that the first documented use of OMG(oh my god)was in 1917, or that LOL was once a common term meaning little old ladies in 1960? That's what the world learned when OMG, LOL, and FYI (for your information) were added to the Oxford English Dictionary last week. This dictionary is considered by many to be the reference book that defines the English language.
Words added to the Oxford English Dictionary are truly considered new members of the language. People invent new words all the time, but only a few become popular enough to get defined in dictionaries.
Typed online or in text messages, LOL, FYI, and OMG are initialisms,_which can be said aloud letter by letter, like LOL, which now stands for Laugh Out Loud.Faster to type than the full phrases, initialisms like these have been used online since the 1990s. But these three online terms are now spoken outside the Internet too, making them different from other online lingo( 行话). Dictionary editors decided the words are used so commonly that they had to be defined this year.
Another important addition to the dictionary this year was ♥, as in “I ♥ NY.” This is the first graphic (图形的 ) symbol ever defined in the Oxford English Dictionary. The editors added ♥ as a verb under the definition of “heart”, meaning “to love”.
Some slang words — informal language used more commonly in speech than in writing — were also added, like wassup, a shortened way to say “What's up”. Even words that have been in use for many years like biker and happy camper were finally added to the dictionary.
The Oxford English Dictionary now defines more than 600,000 words. That adds up to more than 21,730 pages! Guinness World Records calls it the longest dictionary in the world. The Oxford English Dictionary is known for recording words of all kinds—popular, outdated, and even foreign words used by English speakers throughout the language's long history.

Four students at the University of Hefei, in eastern China, recently proved that you don’t have to spend a small fortune on a designer dress to look attractive. You can make it yourself, for free, using only plant leaves. Photos of the leaf dress have been posted on social media for about a week, and people still can't stop gushing (交口称赞) over them.
The team behind the unique dress ---two girls and two boys--- got the idea for it over six months ago, while trying to come up with an interesting project for the annual “Animal and Plant Specimen Contest” at the University of Hefei. During that time, the girls couldn't stop talking about how beautiful the dress worn by actress Zhang ziyi at the Cannes Festival looked, and one of them suggested they try to recreate it out of plant leaves.
They asked for their teacher’s advice, and even though he considered it difficult to succeed, they went with it anyway. After researching the best way to use plant leaves as fabric (衣料), and coming up with a design for their dress, they started collecting the leaves. Some species were readily available on campus, but others were not. So they had to travel to Tianzhu Mountain to collect them.
To ensure that the collected leaves didn’t shrivel orrot (枯萎或腐烂), they removed the flesh by boiling them in alkali and sodium carbonate solution (碱和碳酸钠溶液) for about two hours. They struggled to get the proportions of alkali and sodium carbonate and the boiling time just right, to ensure that the flesh could be easily removed without damaging the skeleton of the leaf. Through trial and error, and with their teacher’s guidance they were able to come up with a perfect formula (配方).
They could only work on their special dress after class and on weekends, so it took them nearly four months to complete. That’s a pretty long time, but it all paid off when one of the girls got to finally put on the leaf dress and show it off to everyone.
