My darling daughter,
Recently I saw a diary of years. It was written when you were nine. I read your goals in the diary, and one little goal was really surprising for me. It was “to make Mom happy”.
I was so moved, and I would have told you that you made me happy every day of my life. My first thoughts in the morning were of you. When I got home from work, I couldn’t wait to see you. I liked talking to you very much and I wanted to know what your day was like. You kept my spirit alive, my mind challenged and my body active. You were, and still are, the light of my life. Without you, my life would have been boring. You made me happy and you continue to do so.
You are a mother now, with a child of your own. I know you love her, so I think you should tell her how happy she makes you. Sometimes we forget to say the words that are in our hearts. These words can be very important to a child. They can change their world completely. They can create a beautiful world for them.
You are my joy in life, my little one. You always have been, and you always will be. Never forget that, and tell that to your child. Tell her that she is the most important thing in the world for you, because she makes things joyful in your life! I love you, my dearest daughter.

Dear strangers, I remember you.
Ten months ago, when my cellphone rang, you were walking into Whole Foods, prepared to go about your food shop But I had already abandoned my cart full of groceries and I stood in the entryway of the store. My brother was telling me my father was dead. And as we hung up the phone, I started to cry and scream as my whole body trembled.
Overwhelmed with emotions, I fell to the floor. and you, kind strangers, you were there You could have kept on walking, ignoring my cries, but you didn’t. You could have simply stopped and stared at my primal (原始的) display: of pain, but you didn’t. Instead you surrounded me as I yelled through my sobs.
I remember in that haze (阴霾) of emotions, one of you asked for my phone and asked who you should call. I remember that I could hear your words as you tried to reach my husband for me, leaving an urgent message on his answering machine for him to call me.
I recall hearing you discuss among yourselves who would drive me home in my car and who would follow that person to bring him back to the store. You didn’t know one another, but it didn’t seem to matter. You encouraged me, a stranger, in the worst moment of my life and you gathered around me with common purpose, to help.
I told you that I had a friend, Pam, who worked at Whole Foods and one of you went in search of her and thankfully, she was there that morning and you brought her to me. I remember the relief I felt at seeing her face familiar and warm. She confronted and cared for me so lovingly until my husband could get to me.

When was the last time you were late and expected someone to understand? How about the time you left your dishes on the table for someone else to clean up? Or perhaps you left the lid on the peanut butter jar loose, and the person after you opened the jar to find it dry and not fresh.
Often, we are eager to ignore our own faults. But we have higher standards when it comes to our expectations of someone else who has the same expectations. We need to as equally understand the weaknesses of others and excuse them just as we excuse ourselves.
Two of my strengths are punctuality(准时) and organization. I like to meet deadlines when they are due and keep the space around my computer neat and orderly. But sometimes things happen, and I slip from being perfect. When this happens, I show myself mercy and lower the standard for myself. However, if someone else makes a mess around my computer, I might not show them as much mercy as I show myself. If it can happen to me, then I should be willing to realize that it can happen to someone else as well.
I am not suggesting that we should not work on improving our faults, or that it should be right to be late or leave a mess behind us. Although we should always be working towards self-improvement, we shouldn’t have a double standard that says we are excused from our own mistakes but we cannot excuse someone else. If we are not 100-percent perfect, we shouldn’t expect others to be.
Mercy shows an understanding heart. If we are blind to our own faults, we will not be very merciful towards others. Showing a little mercy goes a long way when life’s little mistakes take place. When the tables are turned, showing mercy towards someone’s shortcomings could cause us to receive some in return.
1.From the first paragraph we can learn that________________.
A. we all make a mess sometimes
B. we all need private space
C. we should accept others’ help with gratitude
D. we should not open the lid on the peanut butter jar
2.How does the author develop the third paragraph?
A. By raising questions. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing opinions. D. By showing research findings
3.The underlined part, “When the tables are turned” in the last paragraph, can be best replaced by____________.
A. “When good luck comes” B. “When benefits increase”
C. “When our mistakes happen” D. “When the situation is changed”
4.What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Changing Bad Daily Habits B. Excusing Our Own Faults
C. Being Merciful Toward Others D. Working Toward Self-improvement

When you were at school, the last thing you probably wanted to do was to spend your weekends going to work. There was homework to do, sport to play and fun to have. But our parents probably persuaded us to find a job to earn some money and get some life experience. When I was a teenager I had a paper round: delivering newspapers to people’s homes.
Today in the UK you are allowed to work from the age of 13, and many children do take up part-time jobs. It’s one of those things that are seen almost as a rite of passage (成人仪式) .It’s a taste of independence and sometimes a useful thing to put on your CV (简历). Teenagers agree that it teaches valuable lessons about working with adults and also about managing their own money.
Some research has shown that not taking up a Saturday or holiday job could be deleterious to a person later on. A 2015 study by the UK Commission on Employment and Skills found that not participating in part-time work at school age had been blamed by employers’ organizations for young adults being ill-prepared for full-time employment, but despite this, recent statistics have shown that the number of schoolchildren in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years.
So does this mean that British teenagers are now afraid of hard work? Probably not. Some experts feel that young people feel going out to work will affect their performance at school and they are under some pressure now to study hard and get good exam result and a good job in the long term. However, Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told BBC News that “Properly regulated part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives.” In reality, it’s all about getting the right balance between doing part-time work and having enough time to study and rest.
Many young people actually want to work because it gives them a sense of freedom. One 13-year-old girl called Rachel, who has a Saturday job in a shop, told the BBC that “I enjoy my job because I’m earning money and it helps me socialize with people I work with.” That seems like something worth getting up for a Saturday morning. Did you do a part-time job when you were at school?
1.What can we conclude from Para 2?
A.Students taking up part-time jobs are more independent.
B.Taking up part-time jobs can help students save money.
C.Taking up part-time jobs is good for students in many ways.
D.Children over 13 in the UK must take up part-time jobs.
2.The underlined word “deleterious” in Para 3 means _________.
A.important B.harmful
C.threatening D.beneficial
3.Which of the following might Geoff Barton agree with?
A.Students with good grades and no study pressure can do part-time jobs.
B.Students should put all their energies into their studies.
C.The more part-time jobs they do, the more beneficial it is for students.
D.It is good for students to do part-time jobs as long as they are proper.
4.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Should schoolchildren have part-time jobs?
B.What kind of part-time job should schoolchildren do?
C.What benefits can part-time jobs bring to schoolchildren?
D.Why do British schoolchildren show less interest in part-time jobs?
