“Oh,my god.Are you serious?”
That’s a reaction I often get when people hear the tale of my childhood.
It’s a story I don’t often share.Growing up in a bad home, I learned to protect myself by not speaking up.I've seldom said anything about how badly I was treated and hurt as a child. I don’t talk about how my name was changed at least three times, what it was like to live in my van(箱式货车), or how I've struggled with anxiety, depression, and wanting to kill myself. But I learned to start speaking up for myself.I went on to earn two graduate degrees and I will complete my Doctor’s degree this year.I've also become a widely published author. So,how did I get to where I am today?
What helped me is surrounding myself with caring, loving people. I've learned day-to-day skills through research, trial and error, and with the help of skilled professionals. They’ve taught me how to slow down,to breathe,to be thankful for what I've got. They’re the ones who make my goals possible. They have also taught me to turn my past experiences into strength-to make the negatives into positives.
My hope is that sharing my story might help others to see what is possible even in the darkest of times and help others to speak out.I don’t think I'm in any way special or unique. I'm a common man,no more deserving than anyone else. But for far too long,I've been afraid that others think I'm damaged goods.I've worried about how I might be treated differently.
Pain and fear teach us to be silent. It’s time for that to change.
I don’t know what tomorrow might bring. But one thing I've learned is that if we can hold on and find help,if we find ways to get through the day and speak up,we’11 not only survive, but become stronger than before.
Our very survival can be an inspiration all on its own.And with love of my friends,I look forward to so much more than completing my education—I look forward to the future.

There is an old Chinese tale about a woman whose only son died. Sadly, she went to the holy man and asked, “What magical things do you have to bring my son back to life?”
Instead of sending her away or reasoning with her, he said to her, “Fetch me a mustard (芥菜) seed from a home that has never known sadness. We will use it to drive the sadness out of your life.” The woman happily went off at once in search of that magical mustard seed.
She first came to a splendid house, knocked at the door and said, “I am looking for a home that has never known sadness. Is it such a place? It is very important to me.”
They told her “You’ve certainly come to the wrong place” and began to describe all the tragic things that had happened to them recently.
The woman said to herself, “I have had misfortune of my own. Who is able to help these poor, unfortunate people?” She stayed to comfort them, and then went on in search of a home that had never known sadness. But wherever she went, she found one tale after another of sadness and misfortune. As a foreigner , I often hear the Chinese calling me laowai ” . If I could not speak Chinese or if I had no understanding of Asian customs , I might be angry when I am called a “ laowai ” . But having lived in the Philippines and China’s Taiwan Province teaching English for several years , I have come to China with a different view from most other foreign teachers here . In such situations , I just answer back in standard Chinese : “ Ni zenmo zhidao wo shi waiguoren ?( How do you know I’m a foreigner ? )” When I hear people shout out “ hello ” in a more impolite way and then laugh , I reply in Chinese with “ Ni de yingyu bi wo de hao .(Your English is better than mine .)”
Speaking Chinese is a way of living an easier life in China . As an English teacher at Hubei University in Wuhan , I was once invited by a student to spend the weekend with his family . Because I can speak Chinese quite freely , I was able to talk with my student’s entire family . From my personal experience , I knew that the Chinese have a “ gift ”for making foreigners in China feel right at home . That fun-filled weekend I spent with my student’s family in Caidian , a small suburb of Wuhan , just showed that my idea was right .
It was an experience I will never forget .
Americans have a saying : If you can’t beat them , then join them .The secret to feeling at home with the Chinese people isn’t to try to make them change over to Western ways . The secret is to become one of them . Just go with the flow , or don’t take things too seriously . In this way you will surely feel at home in China .
If you no longer emphasize (强调) our differences from the Chinese , you will be more willing to concentrate on what “ big noses ” and “ small noses ” have in common .

Now we’re always hearing about road accident, and when we’re in a car we try to drive carefully, but how many of us take the same degree of care in our homes? Any large hospital will tell you the number of the accidents that happen in the home is almost the same as those on the road.
One of the commonest and most dangerous causes of home accidents is wrong and careless use of electrical equipment. People will continue to use a loose plug or pull out a plug without first turning off the power. In spite of warnings, one will carry an electric heater into the bathroom when he is going to have a bath. Sometimes one forgets to cut off the power before mending a lamp or something else. All this will cause accidents. So the rule about anything that work by electricity is:Switch off before you touch anything and don’t pretend you know when you actually don’t.
If you’ve got children in the house, it's always best to keep medicines of any kind out of their reach. Otherwise, they may be taken for candies or a new kind of drink. When there are older people living with you, you have to take particular care in a number of ways in order to make them safe and happy.
Fire, of course, is always a risk. So, remember not to dry clothes in front of fires, or leave stoves in the middle of rooms where they can easily be knocked over. And don’t forget to keep the children away from fire. Smoking, too, may cause fire. So you’d better give it up. Safety first may mean a little more time and care, but it may save you a lot of trouble.

A.we take the same degree of care in our homes |

B.the improper use of the electrical equipment is the most dangerous cause of home accidents |
C.people should cut off the power first before using the electrical equipment |
D.both the children and the older people should be taken special care of at home |
3.It can be inferred in the text that our life at home will be much safer if __________.
A.we know more about the accidents that happen in the home |
B.all of us give up smoking as soon as possible |
C.we take more time and care in our life |
D.we keep the stoves at the corner of the rooms |
4.The main purpose of writing the text is __________.
A.to tell how and why home accidents happen |
B.to persuade people to get rid of bad habits |
C.to explain how to use electrical equipment |
D.to instruct people how to prevent home accidents |
