When a Swedish ship that sank in 1628 was recovered from the port of Stockholm, historians and scientists were overjoyed with the chance to examine the remains of the past. The ship construction showed how ships were built and operated during the seventeenth century. In this way, artifacts, objects made by human beings, provided a picture of daily life almost 400 years ago.
Underwater archaeology __the study of ships, aircraft and human settlements that have sunk under large bodies of water is really a product of the last 50 years. The rapid growth of this new area of study has occurred because of the invention of better diving equipment .Besides the Swedish ship wreck(残骸),underwater archaeologists have made more exciting discoveries such as the 5000-year-old boats in the Mediterranean Sea.
Underwater archaeology can provide facts about the past. In ancient ports all over the world are ships sunken in the past 6,000 years. There are also sunken settlements in seas and lakes telling of people way of life and their systems of trade in ancient times. Underwater archaeologists want to study these objects to add to the world's knowledge of history, but they have to fight two enemies. One enemy is treasure hunters who dive for ancient artifacts that they can sell to collectors. Once sold, these objects are lost to experts. The second enemy is dredging machines(挖掘机)often used to repair ports. These machines destroy wrecks and artifacts or bury them deeper under sand and mud. By teaching the public about the importance of underwater “museums” of the past, archaeologists are hoping to get support for laws to protect underwater treasures.

In my generation, most people assume. We assume that after getting a driver’s license, we should see a brand new car sitting in our driveway. We assume that the latest iPhone product should be in our hands as soon as something goes wrong with our old one. We also assume that college, being as expensive as it is, is given. However, what we don't realize is that all of these things are very special privileges.
New cars, the latest technology and college fees are something that most people have in the place where I live. I' m not necessarily complaining about this. I live in a very fortunate area, and I try to remind myself of that every day.
Getting nice things is great, but sometimes, the competition that rules our lives gets too fierce. When someone else gets something great, you begin to think, "Why can't I have that?" When everyone around you goes to college, you think that one day you will obviously do the same, because who doesn’t?
Even now, being almost done with my first year of college, I constantly see people who forget why we're here, and how lucky we are to be on this campus. All of the distractions can surely keep you from doing your best, and they can easily make you forget your real purpose at college. The parties, friends, events, and overall social life can move you into a never-ending whirlpool (旋涡) of not doing schoolwork. Having fun is a part of life, but balance is the key when it comes to college.
Appreciation nowadays is slowly fading into a distant thought. We constantly forget how lucky we are to have the things and the life that we do. Surely, who doesn’t dream of a new car waiting for them, or that brand new iPhone that you see in all of the commercials? But wanting something is different from expecting it. Setting yourself up with an "I should get this" attitude will only push appreciation further away.
Appreciate what you have, but don't expect what you don't have. Say thank you to those who help and support you, and realize that whoever you are, you' re lucky in a great way.
1.Which of the following may the author agree with?
A. Assuming should be forbidden.
B. People of his generation are lazy.
C. What we have may be privileges.
D. College education shouldn’t be expensive.
2.What do we know about the author?
A. He is too poor to afford a new car.
B. He is sure that everyone can go to college.
C. He is a fortunate second-year student.
D. He is grateful for his college education.
3.What does the author think of the social activities at college?
A. They should be balanced in students' life.
B. They are totally a waste of time and money.
C. They make students confused about their life.
D. They are useful for students after graduation.
4.According to the fifth paragraph, people nowadays .
A. don’t expect new cars or cell phones
B. don’t seem to appreciate what they have
C. always set up big goals in life
D. often complain they are unlucky

Is it wrong to use someone else’s wireless(Wi-Fi) connection?Just recently,a man was arrested for doing just that.At that time,he was sitting in the street with a laptop(便携式电脑)and using an unsecured(无安全保护措施)wireless connection to surf the Net.What do you think about this topic?Listen to the following different views on it.
For a start,if someone is using your Internet service or downloading, this will affect your speed of access or download limit. Also,it’s bad for Internet service providers. They will suffer in the long run because fewer people will pay for an Internet service if they know they can get it for free. And finally, just imagine this:what if the person who is stealing your Internet connection is involved in an illegal activity?I think the police are totally right to arrest these criminals.
—by Sandra Wilkins
Basically,if the person who paid for the service still has everything they paid for, what’s the problem? It’s just like using the light from streetlamps to read your book,or watching someone else’s firework display. It’s not stealing.
Also,if you leave your wireless connection unsecured, then it is your own fault(过错)if someone else uses it.Just as you wouldn’t leave your front door unlocked,or your car door open, neither should you leave your wireless connection open.By leaving your wireless connection open, you are inviting people to use it.Securing your wireless connection is as easy as clicking a few settings on your router(路由器).And finally, haven’t the police got more important crimes to solve? They’re always saying how they haven’t got the manpower to solve real issues. But this is just ridiculous(荒谬的).
—by James Hoarley

Some futurologists have assumed that the vast upsurge(剧增) of women in the workforce may mean a rejection of marriage. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. The converse(反面) of this concern is that becoming a multi-paycheck household could encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man counted in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to put off marriage because the parties cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy comes to life, the number of marriages also rises.
The increase in divorce rates follows to the increase in women working outside the home. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wife’s work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible(似是而非的). Tensions grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. By raising a family’s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family’s financial and emotional stability.
Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife blocked from a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union.
Also, a major part of women’s inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.
1.It is said in the passage that when the economy falls_____
A. men would choose working women as their marriage partners
B. more women would get married to seek financial security
C. even working women would worry about their marriages
D. more people would prefer to remain single for the time being
2.If women find fulfillment through work outside the home,_____.
A. they are more likely to dominate their marriage partners
B. their husbands are expected to do more housework
C. their marriage ties can be strengthened
D. they tend to put their career before marriage
3.One reason why women with no career may seek a divorce is that_____.
A. they feel that they have been robbed of their freedom
B. they are afraid of being bossed around by their husbands
C. they feel that their partners fail to live up to their expectations
D. they tend to suspect their husbands loyalty to their marriage
4.Which of the following statements can best summarize the authors view in the passage?
A. The stability of marriage and the divorce rate may reflect the economic situation of the country
B. Even when economically independent, most women have to struggle for real equality in marriage
C. In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home and remain independent
D. The impact of the growing female workforce on marriage varies from case to case.
