People tend to become more personal and hide less of themselves when using email. Researchers from Open University in Britain have found in a recent study that there are good reasons for this.
The team of researchers asked 83 pairs of students, all strangers to each other, to solve a problem. They had to discuss this question: If only five people in the world could be saved from a world disaster, who should they be? The pairs of students had to talk over the problem either face to face or by computers. Dr. Johnson said, “They told their partners four times as much about themselves when they talked over the Internet as when they talked face to face. When the computers were fitted with cameras so that students could see each other, this limited the personal side of the conversation.”
Generally the information was not extremely personal. It was mainly about things such as where they went to school, or where they used to live. But some students discussed their love stories, and personal childhood experiences.
Dr Johnson believes that emailing encourages people to focus on themselves. And when they do this, they become more open, especially if there are no cameras. “If you cannot see the other person, it becomes easier to talk about yourself. This is because you are not thinking what the other person is thinking of you. So emailing has become the modern way of talking,” said Dr. Johnson. However, this style of talking is not entirely new. “In the 19th century people started to use the ‘telegraph’ to communicate. Now the same kind of thing has happened and people ended up speaking more freely.”
Dr. Johnson thinks that emailers need to know about these effects of emailing, especially when they start work in a company. “ If you don’t know about it, you could find yourself saying more about yourself than you wanted to.”

People all over the world today are beginning to hear and learn more and more about the problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by man's release of completely new and often artificial substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance , such as oil tankers into the sea.
The whole industrial process which makes many of the goods and machines we need and use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the environmental balance, or the ecological balance as it is also known. Many of these waste products can be prevented or disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more new and complex goods are produce there will be new, dangerous wastes to be disposed of, for example, the waste products from nuclear power stations. Many people, therefore, see pollution as only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of industrial production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more on their land to feed our ever-increasing populations. However, the land itself is gradually becoming worn out as it is being used in some cases, too heavily, and artificial fertilizer cannot restore the balance.
Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three or four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which cannot be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste of resources, in term of glass, metals and paper. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help to solve by cutting out unnecessary buying ,excess consumption and careless disposal of the products we use in our daily lives.
45.The underlined phrase “disposed of ”in the second paragraph means_______.
A. dealt with B. exposed
C. disapproved of D. collected
46. In the writer’s view ,the more new goods, _______.
A. the less pollution
B. the harder pollution can be prevented
C. the more pollution there will be
D. the more easily pollution can be controlled
47.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. We can do much to reduce pollution.
B. The government is trying hard to stop pollution.
C. Individuals know how to get rid of the habit of littering everywhere.
D. We can’t stop buying unnecessary things.
48. People can help solve the problem of pollution by _______.
A. urging their governments to control litter and waste
B. making anti-pollution advertisements
C. cutting down the use of oil and other oil products
D. reducing unnecessary buying, over-consumption and careless disposal of wastes

One in five women and one in eight men are becoming more tired and less productive, according to a new Australian study on mobile phone use.
Led by the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, researchers surveyed 709 mobile phone users across the country aged 18 to 83 and asked them a series of questions based on a similar study 13 years ago. Identifying a phenomenon "technoference (科技干扰)", researchers discovered a significant increase in people blaming their devices for losing sleep, becoming less productive and even getting more aches and pains".
According to the study's lead author Dr Oscar, the issue is so bad that 24 percent of women and 15 percent of men are now considered to be " problematic mobile phone users". "When we talk about technoference, we're referring to the everyday intrusions (侵入)and interruptions that people experience due to mobile phones and their usage," he said. "Our survey found technoference had increased among men and women. For example, self-reports relating to the loss of sleep and productivity showed that these negative outcomes had significantly increased during the last 13 years. This finding suggests that mobile phones are potentially increasingly affecting aspects of daytime functioning due to lack of sleep. "
Compared to a 2005 study, "technoference" issues for 18 to 24-year-old experienced a surprising 40. 9 percent rise, while those aged 25 to 29 also recorded a dramatic increase of 23. 5 percent.
Oscar said that with the number of smartphone users around the world expected to surpass 2. 5 billion before the end of this year, the problem of "technoference" could get even worse. "The speed and depth of smartphone take-up makes our population particularly vulnerable to some of the negative consequences of high mobile phone use." he said. "Rapid technological innovations have led to dramatic changes in today's mobile phone technology, which can improve the quality of life for phone users but also result in some negative outcomes. "
1.How are people affected by technoference according to the text?
A.It makes people addicted to communicating online.
B.It pushes people to work at a fast pace.
C.It causes people to sleep less at night.
D.It brings negative outcomes to people of all ages.
2.Which group are most influenced by smartphones?
A.Young women. B.Young man
C.Children. D.Seniors.
3.What does the underlined word "vulnerable" in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Widely spread. B.Easily hurt.
C.Deeply devoted D.Absolutely accustomed.
4.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The increasing side effects of smartphones.
B.Ways to solve technoference problem.
C.Smartphones and people's happiness.
D.The popularity of smartphones.

Many of us believe that a person’s mind becomes less active as he grows older. But this is not true, according to Dr.Lissy F.Jarvik, professor of psychiatry(精神病学)at the University of California,Los Angeles, and a board member of the New Center for Aging at the Veterans Hospital. She has studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concerns 136 pairs of twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old.As Dr.Jarvik continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 80s,their minds did not generally decline(下降)as was expected.
However, there was some decline in their psycho-motor(精神运动的)speed. This means that it took them longer to accomplish mental tasks than it used to.But when speed was not a factor, they lost very little intellectual (智力的) ability over the years. In general,Dr.Jarvik’s studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only into the 30s and 40s,but into the 60s and 70s as well.
As for learning new things, and ability to remember, studies by Dr.Jarvik and others show that the old are equal to the young. It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call“loss of memory”is not that at a11.
In the cases where the older person’s mind really seems to decline,it is not necessarilv a sign of a decay due to becoming old or“senility”.Often it is simply a sign of a depressed emotional state. This depression usually can be got rid of by counseling(咨询)with a psychologist,or medicine which fights depression.
In American society, when an older person loses something,we tend to call him or her“senile”.But notice that when a younger person loses something,he does not blame it on senility or loss of memory. He finds some other excuse!
1.A long-term study of 136 pairs of twins showed that the only factor that declined over the years was .
A.mental health | B.intellectual ability |
C.the amount of knowledge | D.psycho-motor speed |
2.According to Dr.Jarvik’s studies,middle-aged and older persons should expect to .
A.reason better | B.learn fewer new things |
C.remember less | D.1ose little ability to remember |
3.The word“senility”most likely means .
A.excellent health | B.weakness in body and mind because of old age |
C.occasional forgetfulness | D.giving up one’s life |
4.Both younger and older persons should realize that .
A.a sign of a decay due to old age or“senility’’is a common thing |
B.older persons are wiser than younger ones because of different knowledge amount |
C.senility or mental decay due to aging is much less common than most of us believe |
D.a sign of a depressed emotional state is not a reason of decay |
