Chinese people read less than eight books last year, including both print and e-books, but the average(平均) time spent on mobile reading has for the first time exceeded one hour per day, showed statistics(数据) published by Chinese Academy of Press and Publication on Monday.
This is the academy’s 13th report regarding Chinese people’s reading habits in 17 years. The survey looked at the reading habits of both adults and children from 0 – 80, placing them in four different age groups, across 29 provinces in China.
The number of print books the average person read last year was 4.58, which basically remained the same level as that in 2014. The figure is rather low compared with other countries, with France being 12, South Korea being 11, Japan being 9 and the US being about seven, according to a report by Xinhua last year.
However, in contrast to the tiny increase in books being read last year, people’s interest in mobile reading has seen a rise. The average time Chinese people spent reading on their cellphones is 62.21 minutes, which nearly doubles the previous year’s average time of 33.82 minutes.
And more people are reading via their WeChat app as well. The most popular social networking phone app in China has also been providing public account services, which allow people to read comparatively long articles using the app. In 2015, 51.9% Chinese adults had used WeChat to read, a 17.5% increase on 2014.
But does that mean e-reading is replacing traditional reading in China?
Wei Yushan, president of the Academy of Press and Publication told People’s Daily that it doesn’t seem likely to him. “Having gone through a rapid development between 2011 and 2013, e-books are seeing a slowdown in their sales. Taking the US as an example, the sales growth of e-books has fallen behind that of print books in the past year.” In China, nearly 60% of people still prefer traditional reading to e-reading.
1.What does the underlined word “exceeded” in paragraph 1 mean?

Young people are definitely less courageous (勇敢的) than they were 30 years ago. Why is this? It’s because they are spoiled, and take for granted everything that they have or are given.
Thirty years ago, there wasn’t nearly as much blatant (公然的) disrespect for elders, peers, or other people in general. At that time, young people were taught that to get anything or get anywhere in life, they’d have to work for it and earn it.
If young people aren’t being taught the basics of respecting others, and aren’t being taught that they need to work to make a living, then where are they to learn courage?
Courage isn’t necessarily about risking your life, for whatever reason. It is about being able to face any kind of hardship, and to make decisions and face the consequences of those decisions.
Courage means being able to learn from hard times, and to take those lessons with you through life. It means having the resourcefulness (足智多谋) to find ways to deal with your problems yourself, and not being afraid to do so.
Too many young people now rely on parents, siblings, older relatives and others to get them through life. Too often they turn to these figures whenever they get into trouble, and expect to have their problems solved for them.
If we are to help our young people become more courageous, we should stop spoiling them, stop doing everything for them, and teach them the skills necessary to make basic life decisions on their own.
Once these basic principles are instilled (灌输) in our young people, I think we’ll find that they are more courageous than we could have dreamed, and more like the young people of thirty years ago than we had ever imagined.
It’s time to go back to older values and ideas, and to bring courage back into our young people and society.
Theme | 1._____with young people 30 years ago, those are less courageous. |

Tips | *Never 9.____ them; only help them when necessary. *Teach them the skills they need to make basic life decisions by themselves. |

Last night was the last game for my eight-year-old son’s soccer team. It was the final quarter. The score was two to one, my son’s team in the lead. Parents surrounded the playground, offering encouragement.
With less than ten seconds remaining, the ball suddenly rolled in front of my son’s teammate, Mickey O’ Donnel. With shouts of “Kick it!” echoing across the playground, Mickey turned around and gave it everything he had. All around me the crowd erupted. O’Donnel had scored!
Then there was silence. Mickey had scored all right, but in the wrong goal, ending the game in a tie. For a moment there was a total hush. For years experts have argued that poor households are consuming less nourishing food than the rest of the population.
But a survey of some of the lowest earners in Britain shows the nutritional value of what they eat is little different to everyone else.
In fact, the same deficiencies in diet were shared by all the population and the findings suggest that poor eating choices are far more widespread than previously suspected - affecting many wealthier families.
These included low fruit and vegetable consumption, not eating enough oily fish and eating too much saturated fat and sugar.
“This is a large and significant study and it shows we are all eating just as bad a diet as each other,” said Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University.
The poorest families were eating only slightly more sugar and slightly less fruit and vegetables, according to the study of 3,728 respondents in the bottom of the population.
Alison Tedstone, head of nutritional science at the Food Standard Agency, said: “ Overall, people on low incomes have less than ideal diets, but their diets are only slightly worse than those of the rest of the population.”
The study also showed that low earners are choosing to eat unhealthily. Their food choices were not linked to their income, their access to shops or their cooking skills.
The findings appear to contradict assumptions that the poor cannot afford healthier foods or are too far away from shops that sell them.
The Low Income Nutrition and Diet Survey showed that like the rest of the population, the poor's daily fruit and vegetable intake on average is below the recommended five portions. Fewer than 10 per cent of respondents hit this target, while around 20 per cent ate less than a portion per day.
More than three quarters (76 per cent) of men and 81 per cent of women did less than one 30-minute session of moderate or vigorous exercise per week.
Some 45 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women were smokers.
This compares with 28 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women in the general population.
1. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. Whether the poor or the rich maybe have a bad diet.
B. Even the poor can enjoy enough fruit and fish consumption.
C. Only the poor have a bad diet.
D. The study was conveyed in both the rich and the poor.
2.What kind of persons maybe eat most sugar?
A. The rich. B. Men. C. The poorest. D. Women
3. From the passage, we can learn __________.
A. the poor choose unhealthy food because of low income
B. having no access to shops also leads to the poor’s bad diet
C. the poor’s daily fruit intake is as much as general people
D. the number of smokers in the poor is bigger than that in general people
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The poor’s healthy problem. B. Keep off junk food.
C. How to have a good diet. D. A diet survey.

When I was eight or nine years old, I wrote my first poem.
My mother read the little poem and began to cry. “Buddy, you didn’t really write this beautiful, beautiful poem!” Shyly, I said that I had. My mother poured out her welcome praise. Why, this poem was nothing short of genius!
What time will Father be home?” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him what I had accomplished. My mother said she hoped he would be home around 7. I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for his arrival. First, I wrote the poem out in my finest handwriting. Then I used colored pens to draw a border around it. Then I confidently placed it right on my father’s plate on the dining table. But my father did not return at 7, Seven-fifteen, Seven-thirty. My father had begun his motion-picture career as a writer. He would be able to appreciate my poem even more than my mother.
It was almost 8 o’clock when my father burst in. He was an hour late, but he could not sit down. I can see him now, a big Havana cigar in one hand, the rapidly disappearing drink in the other, calling down bitter words on his employees.
Suddenly, he paused and glared at his plate. There was a silence. He was reaching for my poem. I lowered my head and stared down into my plate.
“What is this?” I heard him say.
“Ben, a wonderful thing has happened,” my mother said. “Buddy has written his first poem. And it’s beautiful, absolutely amazing”.
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to decide that for myself,” Father said.
I kept my face lowered to my plate. It was only 10 lines long. But it seemed to take hours. I remember wondering why it was taking so long. I could hear him dropping the poem back on the table again. Now was the moment of decision.
“I think it’s bad,” my father said.
I couldn’t look up. My eyes were getting wet.
“Ben, sometimes I don’t understand you,” my mother was saying. “This is just a little boy. You’re not in your studio now. These are the first lines of poetry he’s ever written. He need encouragement.”
“I don’t know why,” my father held his ground. “Isn’t there enough bad poetry in the world already? No law says Buddy has to become a poet.”
I couldn’t stand it another second. I ran from the dining room, threw myself on the bed and cried.
That may have been the end of the anecdote(轶事) — but not of its significance for me.
A few years later I took a second look at that first poem, and unwillingly I had to agree with my father’s tough judgment. It was a pretty bad poem. After a while, I worked up the courage to show him something new, a short story. My father thought it was overwritten but not hopeless. I was learning to rewrite. And my mother was learning that she could disapprove of me without ruining me. You might say we were all learning. I was going on 12.
As I worked my way into other books and plays and films, it became clearer and clearer to me how fortunate I had been to have had a mother who said, “Buddy, it’s wonderful!” and a father who shook his head no and drove me to tears with his, “I think it’s bad.” In fact all of us in life need that mother force, the loving force from which all creation flows; and yet the mother force alone is incomplete, even misleading, finally damaging, without the father force to caution, “Watch. Listen. Review. Improve.” Between the two poles of affirmation (肯定) and doubt, both in the name of love, I try to follow my true course.
1.What did the mother think of the Buddy’s poem?

B. He would be able to appreciate my poem even more than my mother.
C. I wrote the poem out in my finest handwriting.
D. I could hardly wait to show him what I had accomplished.
3.The underlined sentence “My father held his ground” could best be replaced by ________.
A. My father began to explain his reasons
B. My father thought his comment is unreasonable
C. My father refused to change his opinion
D. My father got so angry that he rose to his feet
4.From the passage, we can infer that the father can be best described as ________.
A. cruel and stubborn B. loving and matter-of-fact
C. bad-tempered and rude D. cautious and strict

A. The incident helped the writer work his work further as a writer.
B. The author only realized the significance of the incident after becoming a writer.
C. After the incident, the author stopped writing but tried his luck in plays and films.
D. The incident completely changed the author’s course of life.

In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. A father rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what happened, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his promise to his son.
Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging.
Other parents tried to pull him off the ruins, saying: “It’s too late! They’re all dead!
