“When one of the doctors criticizes(批评) me, I get defensive. I feel like a child again, being scolded, and I want to explain that I’m not wrong,” says Viola, a nurse. This is a common reaction(反应) to criticism, but not a good one. There are better ways of dealing with criticism.
Try to be objective(客观的).When Sol was criticized by his new employer for not having made a sale, Sol’s reaction was to feel sorry for himself. “I had put everything I had into making that sale,” Sol says. “And I felt that I had failed as a person.I had to learn through experience not to react like that to each failure.”
Take time to cool down. Rather than react at once to criticism, take some time to think over what was said. Your first question should be whether the criticism is fair from the other person’s position. The problem may be a simple misunderstanding of what you did or your reasons for doing it.
Take positive(积极的) action. After you cool down, consider what you can do about the situation. The best answer may be “nothing”. “I finally realized that my boss was having personal problems and taking them out on me because I was there ,” says Sheila. “His criticisms didn’t really have anything to do with my work, so nothing I said or did was going to change them.” In Sheila’s case, the best way to deal with it was to leave her job However, that’s an extreme(极端的) reaction.
You may simply explain your opinion without expecting an in-depth(深入的) discussion. You may even decide that the battle isn’t worth fighting this time. The key, in any case , is to have a reasonable plan.

Lions are the top tourist attraction to Kenya and also considered critically endangered. One of the main causes of their death is that people kill them in return for lions attacking their cows. “We put our cows in a small cow shelter at night,” locals said, “and that’s when the trouble would start. Lions would jump in the shelter and kill the cows”.
There have been a lot of efforts to try to protect the lions, but it’s a crisis and everyone is looking for a solution. One idea was land leases(租用), another was lion-proof fences. However, no one even knew that Richard Turere, a 13-year-old Maasai from Kenya, had already come up with something that worked.
One night Richard was walking around with a flashlight and discovered the lions were scared of a moving light. An idea was born. Three weeks and much repairing later, Richard invented a system of lights that flash around the cow shelter, mimicking a human walking around with a flashlight. His system is made from broken flashlight parts and an indicator box from a motorcycle. “The only thing I bought was a solar panel(电池板), which charges a battery that supplies power to the lights at night.” Richard says. He calls the system Lion Lights.
His simple solution was so successful: his neighbors heard about it and wanted Lion Lights, too. He put in the lights for them. From there, the lights spread and are now being used all around Kenya. Someone in India is trying them out for tigers. In Zambia and Tanzania they’re being used as well.
1.Why do local people kill lions?
A. To attract tourists. B. To protect their cows.
C. To sell them for money. D. To scare away large animals.
2.What makes Richard’s idea successful?
A. That the lights will cost nothing.
B. That the system can protect lions.
C. That the lions are afraid of light.
D. That the cows are lawfully killed.
3.What may be the best title of the text?
A. Lion Lights B. Protecting Lions
C. Endangered Cows D. Lion-proof Fences

When seeing the doctor, you feel better to know you will get some medicine. But the doctor knows that medicine is not always needed. Sometimes all a sick person needs is some reassurance that all will be well. In such cases the doctor may prescribe a placebo.
A placebo is a sugar pill, a harmless shot, or an empty capsule. The patient thinks it is medicine and begins to get better. How does this happen?
The study of the placebo opens up new knowledge about the way the human body can heal itself. It is as if there was a doctor in each of us. The doctor will heal the body for us if we let it. But it is not yet known just how the placebo works to heal the body. Some people say it works because the human mind fools itself. These people say that if the mind is fooled into thinking it got medicine, then it will act as if it did, and the body will feel better.
Placebos don’t always work. The success of this treatment seems to rest a lot with the relationship between the patient and the doctor. If the patient has lots of trust in the doctor and if the doctor really wants to help the patient, then the placebo is more likely to work. So in a way, the doctor is the most powerful placebo of all.
A placebo can also have bad effects. If patients expert a bad reaction to medicine, then they’ll also show a bad reaction to the placebo. Some doctors still think that if the placebo can have bad effects it should never be used. They think there is still not enough known about it.
The strange power of the placebo does seem to suggest that the human mind is stronger than we think it is. There are people who say you can heal your body by using your mind. And the interesting thing is that even people who swear this is not possible have been healed by a placebo.
1.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The placebo. B. The bad effect.
C. The body. D. The medicine.
2.What do we know about the placebo according to the passage?
A. It contains some sort of medicine
B. It won’t function if you are negative about medicine
C. People who don’t believe placebo can’t be healed by it
D. Patients and doctors know clearly how it helps to heal the body
3.Why is the doctor sometimes the most powerful placebo?
A. Because patient needs help badly.
B. Because patient believes in the doctor and the doctor wants to help the patient.
C. Because doctor knows better about the patient’s body.
D. Because doctor has carefully studied medicine.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A. Placebo: Work on Your Mind
B. Placebo: The Most Powerful Medicine
C. Placebo: The Best Doctor
D. Placebo: Heal the Body

When you eat out in a restaurant, it is not unusual to hear people yelling, “Let me get this one!” and sometimes see them pushing or arm wrestling to fight for the privilege of paying the bill.
These fighters are often very loud and active. Each person involved shows an honest desire to pick up the bill, and in the end, all the people at the table give the winner praise and gratitude.
In fact, figuring out who will get the bill is always a headache for Chinese people at formal meals. Although the people hosting the meal are very likely to pay the check, it is a common practice to make a token(装样子的) effort to pay the bill, but you will embarrass them if you do end up actually chipping in some cash.
In recent years, going Dutch has been embraced by many young people. But older generations who fear “losing face” still find it embarrassing and stingy (小气的) to calculate each person’s share of the bill. As travel guide brand Lonely Planet noted, it is considered “the height of unsophistication (不懂人情世故)”.
But these days, thanks to digital payment apps, splitting the bill electronically is becoming a widely-accepted idea. Even people from older generations may be tempted to do so.
By scanning a QR code and paying the share via social networking tool WeChat and e-commerce app Alipay on their smartphones in one easy click, urban Chinese are finding it easier to save them the embarrassment of figuring out each person’s payment when they order a meal.
This function “has made going Dutch less hassle (麻烦) and more fun in China”, CNN noted.
“Because of their convenience, many of us are never without our phones.” And person-to-person mobile payment services are incredibly easy to use and save the trouble of dealing with change,” said 18-year-old student in China. “You can also leave funny notes using emoji (表情符号) like a bowl of rice or a cup of tea to describe a meal that you have shared.”
1.What is the article mainly about?
A. The Chinese tradition of dining out with friends.
B. A new trend of splitting the bill in China.
C. How social networking tools have influenced our daily lives.
D. Why people in China argue over who pays the bill when dining out.
2.Many Chinese people make a token effort to pay the bill because .
A. They don’t want to be considered unsophisticated
B. They want praise and gratitude from their friends
C. They consider it an honor to host the meal and pay the bill
D. They find it hard to work out how much each person needs to pay
3.According to the article, what are the advantages of using digital payment apps to split the bill?
a. They’re easier to use and more interesting.
b. They save the trouble of dealing with change.
c. They make it easier to figure out how much money each person had to pay.
d. They make people less embarrassed to split the bill.
A. a, b B. b. c
