Most times, what people accept as hope is a feeling or thought that something desired may happen. The word hope is a guarantee(保证)of happiness without a doubt. Hope in ancient Greek is “elpis” meaning “to expect or look forward with pleasure”. Orison Swett Marden says “there is no medicine as great and powerful expectation of something better tomorrow.”
Samuel Esson Jonah is one of the world’s most influential personalities of this century. When he was young, mining for Africans was hell on earth, because they were treated very badly and there were no key positions in the industry for them because it was believed that the black could not manage their affairs successfully. Even in the face of all these challenges and discriminations, Jonah hoped to head the industry someday. When he told his workmates and parents about his hope, he became a laughing stock. Not giving up on his hope, he worked hard toward it and at last he became president of Anglo Gold Ashanti.
Hope without doubt helps you to work hard until you finally achieve your aims or goals. Hope keeps one alive and also helps us persevere (坚持) to succeed. Someone may say “I’ve tried and failed several times”. As a matter of fact, failure is inevitable(无法避免的) sometimes but that doesn’t overrule your ability to succeed. The key is that you can’t give up your hope. Our history has seen many great achievers. Though they hoped they could make it, they also failed; however, they didn’t give up on their hope. They worked even harder and eventually succeeded.
Today when we can celebrate so many of them for their courage, remember “faith without work is dead”, so is your dream or hope. Samuel Similes says “Hope is the companion(伙伴) of power, the mother of success, for who so hopes strongly has within him the gift of miracles (奇迹).” So don’t let your hope down.

A. prove that hope can lead to success

What’s the most important thing in a piece of writing? Is it the story, the characters, the description, or the style? Obviously, you can’t choose only one. A great work succeeds in combining all of them in a great mix, producing a wonderful work.
In most cases, you’re better at one writing element over the rest, and working on your strengths will work to your advantage. Building characters, however, is important to your writing. It’s not to be ignored no matter what your case is. So, how do you achieve that?
Make Them Real
This is probably one of the most common pieces of writing advice: make your characters believable. What does it really mean? It means that your characters need to be there for a reason, not just for pushing the story forward. He/She has a real life, with his/her own fears and dreams, and you have to show this. Your characters don’t need to be typical to be believable. The unusual ones are even more interesting, but it’s your job to make your readers relate to them.
Understand Human Psychology
To build great characters, you’ll need to understand people’s psychology: what are they thinking about, what are they feeling and experiencing, and why are they doing what they are doing? Get behind the obvious. Be in the backstage with them. Sit them in a chair and let them talk away. If you truly listen, you will learn.
Be your character
When you immerse (使沉浸) yourself in your writing, you get lost in that world and you start living in it. This is when the magic happens and you become your character. By putting yourself in your character’s shoes, you allow yourself to experience what you’re writing about first-hand. The more it feels real to you, the more the readers will feel the same, too.
1.According to the author, what makes a great work?
A. Being skilled at description. B. Having some unusual characters.
C. Using some special writing styles. D. Combining related things in a great way.
2.According to Paragraph 4, a good writer should be good at ________.
A. knowing others’ minds B. writing down the obvious points
C. thinking differently from others D. starting conversations with others
3.To build a great character, you should ________.
A. write according to true events B. pretend you’re the character
C. talk to others about your character D. forget about your fears and dreams

How to Live a Happy Life
Happiness is what we need most with the increase of pressure in modern life. 1. Fortunately, this is not the case. Everyone has the ability to hang on to happiness with his own efforts. The following methods may lead you to long-lasting happiness.

Keeping in touch with nature can help you reduce stress, make you more creative, improve your memory and may even make you a better person.
• 3. Relationships are worth more than you think. Not feeling socially connected can make you stupider and kill you. Loneliness can lead to heart attack, stroke (中风) and diabetes (肥胖症). On the other hand, studies have shown that the longest lived people on the planet all place a strong emphasis on social engagement.
• Challenge Yourself.4. Music lessons increase intelligence. Challenging your beliefs strengthens your mind. Increasing willpower just takes a little effort each day and it’s more responsible for your success than IQ. Not getting an education or taking advantage of opportunities are two of the things people look back on their lives and regret the most.
• Laugh. Laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and the feet. Most people are aware of what the adoption process is because it has become rather common in our society. Adoption is where a child is legally placed with guardians (监护人) or parents (or perhaps a single parent) other than the birth mother or father. Once an adoption is finalized, all parental rights are turned over to the adoptive parents and there is no legal difference between adoptive parents and natural birth parents. There are generally two types of adoption, which are closed adoption and open adoption.
When an adopted person has access to his or her adoption file and original records, it is referred to as an open adoption. The term is also used to describe any contact that may be between the adoptive family, the birth parents, and the adopted child. The level of openness can change greatly in such contact depending on each individual relationship. There can be indirect contact between the natural birth parents and the child through the form of letters and photographs, or there can be actual physical contact.
A semi-open adoption is where the birth parents may have contact with the adoptive parents before the birth of the child, either once or several times. After the birth there is no more contact. A semi-open adoption may remain as it is or it can become either open or closed.
A closed adoption is where only the medical and historical information about the biological parents is given to the adoptive family. Typically, the birth and adoptive parents do not know each other’s identities. The record of the birth parents is kept sealed (密封). A closed adoption is usually only effective in the adoption of babies. The adoption of an older child who already knows his or her birth parents cannot be kept closed.

C. No information about the biological parents is given to the adoptive parents.
D. Generally speaking, the adoptive parents do not know the birth parents’ identities.
3.Suppose someone adopts a child and his biological parents often get contact with the child by telephone. We can call this adoption _____.
A. a closed adoption B. an open adoption
C. a semi-open adoption D. a semi-closed adoption
4.From the passage, we know adoption is _____.

A new “smart bin” could spell the end of environment - conscious families spending hours sorting tins, cartons, bottles, and cardboard for recycling. The invention, which automatically sorts rubbish into recycling categories, is being trialed in Poland and is set to go on sale in the UK within a few years.
The bin, designed by start - up company Bin. E, recognizes different types of waste via a system positioned inside the bin which uses sensors, image recognition and artificial intelligence. Once waste is placed inside, the camera and sensors identify its type and place it in one of the smaller bins. Then it compresses (压缩) the waste so it occupies less space.
News of the launch showed that more than a million households are being forced to accept bin collections every three or four weeks, because councils are trying to force them to recycle more. Data collected by The Telegraph has showed at least 18 areas have moved or will shortly be moving to three - weekly rubbish collections, while a further three have adopted or are trialing four - weekly collections. While reducing general bin collections, councils are increasing the frequency of recycling collections in a bid to change people’s behaviour. It is thought that the bin could be stocked by department stores such as John Lewis, which said it is introducing new hi - tech recycling bins to satisfy increasing customer appetite for them. Matt Thomas, a utility (家用设施) seller at John Lewis, said, “We’ve recently seen a jump in specialist bins sales, with a 25 percent increase in the last few months alone. We have noticed our customers are becoming more and more sustainability focused, choosing dual compartment (双格) recycling bins that make it far easier to recycle different types of waste. In response to this demand, we are really excited to introduce a new voice and sensor activated smart bin this autumn / winter season — designed to use new technology to make recycling more efficient and functional for the everyday home.”
