Why must we pay taxes? The answer is that the government needs money for many things, for example to pay its soldiers, sailors and airmen, to build roads, bridges, offices, schools, etc and to buy goods from abroad; and only the people of the country can supply the money. One of the most important taxes is income-tax which a person pays according to the amount of his income-tax.Whether he is a businessman, a doctor, a lawyer, a shopkeeper, a miner, or anything else. This is called a “direct” tax, because it is paid in money direct to the government.
Another tax is paid on goods such as watches, jewellery, new clothes, tobacco, wine, etc, when they are brought into a country, such a tax is paid as part of the price of these goods if they are later sold in shops. We call it “indirect” tax, because it is paid indirectly through the shopkeeper.
People usually complain about having to pay taxes, but they forget that the money is spent on the things that they and their families need.We need policemen to catch thieves, to see that men obey the laws, to direct traffic, etc, and they must be paid what they earn; children need education and there must be schools and teachers; we want our streets to be kept clean, and the wages of men who do this kind of work have to be paid.Above all, the country must always be ready to defend itself against attacking enemies, and we cannot have an army without paying for it.
Taxes, therefore, cannot be avoided. We buy our own food and clothes and pay for our own amusements, but there are several things that the State finds the money for, and that are necessary for us if our society is to continue. So we have no real cause to complain when we are asked to supply money to be spent for the good of ourselves and for our fellow-citizens.

A.tax that one pays direct to the government
B.tax that is not paid directly to the government

Both B and C
2.Which of the following is right?
A.Taxes are paid to the sellers.
B.Income-tax is an indirect tax.
C.The tax on new clothes is paid in money direct to the government.

the money is spent on the things that they and their families need

Liverpool is famed for many things — most especially The Beatles and its football team. But few would associate the city with one of the most famous political speeches in history. Yet tourism officials in the city have published the claim that Martin Luther King's “I Have a Dream” was written at a city centre hotel. The allegation (说法) has been made in a guide to a major art event named Liverpool Discovers.
A map in the guide shows more than 20 locations where famous people were born along with places associated with celebrities (名人) and events in their life. The guide claims, “Martin Luther King visited his supporters in Liverpool three times, and the first draft of his famous speech ‘I Have a Dream’ is claimed to have been written at Adelphi Hotel.” The speech, delivered to civil rights campaigners on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington in 1963, is one of the most quoted texts in history and was a definitive moment in the American Civil Rights Movement and in the fight for racial equality.
Dr. King's biographer, Godfrey Hodgson, said that the suggestion did not fit the facts. He said, “I don't believe it. If he had been to Liverpool, there would have been massive media reports, as he would have been a big figure by then. Dr. King did visit the UK on a number of occasions but he was not in the UK around the time of this famous speech in 1963.”Prof. John Belcham, a history lecturer of University of Liverpool who wrote an 800year history of Liverpool in 2008, confirmed that he was unaware of any connection between Dr. King and the city.

To many web-building spiders, most of whom are nearly blind, the web is their essential window on the world: their means of communicating, capturing prey, meeting mates and protecting themselves. A web-building spider without its web is like a men cast away on an island of solid rock, totally out of touch and destined to starve to death. So important is the web to an orb-web spider's survival that the animal will continue to construct new webs daily even if it is being starved. For 16 days the starving spider builds completely normal webs. Then, as the animal gets scrawnier, it constructs a wider-meshed (网孔、网眼)web using fewer strands(线). Such webs would only trap larger prey, which is more economical from the perspective of a starving spider. The spider stores energy by recycling web protein. It simply eats its own web each evening and reuses it to produce new silk. In studies with radioactivity, labeled materials, it was found that 95 percent of web protein reappears in the next day web. Most of the energy needed for web-building is used in walking over the strands as they are laid down. Scientists are impressed by the adaptability of the spider's highly preprogrammed brain, which is larger for its size than the brain of any other invertebrate(无脊推动物). If web-building is interrupted, or if some of the existing strands are destroyed, the spider simply goes back to see where the web is left off and then finishes building a normal web. One spider will finish building the incomplete web of another.
1.Which of the following best expresses the main ideas of the passage?
A. Secrets of Spiders' Adaptability
B. Importance of Webs to Spiders
C. Secrets of the Spiders' Life
D. Spiders' Highly Preprogrammed Brain
2.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Most spiders will stop conducting webs when hungry.
B. One Web-building spider usually conducts one web.
C. Web-building spiders will probably die without their webs.
D. Web-building spiders have good eyesight.
3.The underlined word “scrawnier” in the second paragraph probably means ______.
A. weaker but good-looking
B. fatter and stronger
C. nice and healthier
D. thinner and bony
4.A spider's ability to finish an incomplete web proves that ______.
A. it has a highly preprogrammed brain
B. it reuses its web protein to reproduce new silk
C. the web is everything for a spider
D. it is able to rebuild a destroyed web
