The summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. Before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles(风格). It was almost as bad as being in school. Who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians(古埃及人) and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not interested. Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly (鬈曲的) hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. I certainly couldn't see what was so great about art.
On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. In it, a woman was reading to a child. The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother' s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I couldn't stop looking at this painting ! I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made! It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.
1.The aim of the mother' s plan was to _________.
A. take them to visit the museum B. introduce them to the world of art
C. ask them to read about artists D. show them different painting styles
2.What was the writer' s experience in the museum before the last visit?
A. She came to feel her mother' s love. B. She liked many paintings.
C. She hardly enjoyed herself. D. She could understand the pictures of fat babies.
3.What made the writer go through a change that summer?
A. One of Mary's paintings. B. A strange way of painting.
C. Artists in the Middle Ages. D. Her mother' s instruction.
4.From the text, we can see _________.
A. the importance of curiosity B. the effect of art
C. the value of learning D. the power of family education

When I was nine years old, I went off to summer camp for the first time. And my mother packed me a suitcase full of books, which to me seemed like a perfectly natural thing to do. While reading, you have the animal warmth of your family sitting right next to you, but you are also free to experience the adventure land inside your own mind. And I had this idea that camp was going to be just like this.
On the very first day, our counselor(顾问) gathered us all together and she taught us a cheer that she said we would be doing every day for the rest of the summer to instill(浸润) camp spirit. And it went like this: “R-O-W-D-I-E, that's the way we spell rowdie. Rowdie, rowdie, let's get rowdie . Yeah!”. So I couldn't figure out why we had to spell this word incorrectly. But I recited the cheer along with everybody else. I did my best. And I just waited for the time that I could go off and read my books.
But the first time that I took my book out of my suitcase, the coolest girl in the room came up to me and asked me, “Why are you being so mellow(安静的)?” Mellow, of course, is the exact opposite of R-O-W-D-I-E. And then the second time I tried it, the counselor came up to me with a concerned expression on her face and she repeated the point about camp spirit and said we should all work very hard to be outgoing.
And so I put my books away, back in their suitcase, and I put them under my bed, and there they stayed for the rest of the summer. And I felt kind of guilty about this. I felt as if the books needed me somehow, and they were calling out to me but I just gave them up.
1.According to the author, what would the coming camp be like?
A.It would be very noisy.
B.It would involve lots of reading.
C.It would be full of danger and excitement.
D.It would make a good chance to get close to nature.
2.How did the author feel about the cheer part?
A.Puzzled. B.Excited.
C.Concerned. D.Frightened.
3.How did the counselor react on seeing the author reading?
A.She got very angry.
B.She praised the author.
C.She asked the author to share the book
D.She indirectly advised the author not to read.
4.Why was the author guilty?
A.She was kind of quiet.
B.She had to leave her books unread.
C.She was unwilling to open her books.
D.She didn't follow the counselor's advice.

During summer holidays my mother and I used to escape to one of the lakes north of Prince Albert. In its magic surroundings we spent the long summer days in the open air, swimming and boating or just lying dreaming in the sun.
The last summer was particularly wonderful. For one thing, I was in love for the first time. My boy friend Don worked in Saskatoon, but the lake was his place-the beautiful wilderness attracted him deeply, so I thought it was not to see me that he got on his motorcycle as many Fridays as he possibly could, and drove three hundred miles along the rough roads to spend the week-ends at our place. Sometimes Don couldn't come, because he was hard up(生活拮据), and sometimes worked overtime.
One Friday night a storm broke out. I lay in bed and listened to the thunder and the rain beating on the roof. I tried not to expect Don. Yet I couldn't help imagining him fighting the storm. His motorbike, which had always looked to me so heavy, seemed fragile enough to be blown onto its side by the first strong wind.
I tried to close my throat against the tears. But when my mother, driven by the deep sympathy and understanding between us, came in to me. she kissed my cheek and found it wet.
“Don't get upset, Jane”, she said softly. “He may still come.”
It was hours later that I suddenly heard the sound of the roaring(轰鸣的) engine. The storm was dying. I lay still, relief and pain fighting for ascendancy(支配地位)within me as I heard Don's heavy tired footsteps on the wooden stairs.
1.Why was the last summer especially great for Jane?
A.She fell in love for the first time. B.She had a lot of fun in the open air.
C.Her boyfriend bought a motorcycle. D.Her boyfriend found a beautiful place.
2.What do we know about Don?
A.He lived a poor life. B.He didn't love Jane so much.
C.He worked in a remote village. D.He didn't like traveling in bad weather.
3.Why did Mother come into Jane's room during the storm?
A.She knew Jane was afraid of the thunder. B.She knew Jane was worried about Don.
C.She heard Jane arguing with Don. D.She heard Jane crying.
4.How did Jane feel when she heard Don's footsteps?
A.Excited B.Anxious C.Doubtful D.Complicated (复杂的)
