Most times, what people accept as hope is a feeling or thought that something desired may happen. The word hope is a guarantee(保证)of happiness without a doubt. Hope in ancient Greek is “elpis” meaning “to expect or look forward with pleasure”. Orison Swett Marden says “there is no medicine as great and powerful expectation of something better tomorrow.”
Samuel Esson Jonah is one of the world’s most influential personalities of this century. When he was young, mining for Africans was hell on earth, because they were treated very badly and there were no key positions in the industry for them because it was believed that the black could not manage their affairs successfully. Even in the face of all these challenges and discriminations, Jonah hoped to head the industry someday. When he told his workmates and parents about his hope, he became a laughing stock. Not giving up on his hope, he worked hard toward it and at last he became president of Anglo Gold Ashanti.
Hope without doubt helps you to work hard until you finally achieve your aims or goals. Hope keeps one alive and also helps us persevere (坚持) to succeed. Someone may say “I’ve tried and failed several times”. As a matter of fact, failure is inevitable(无法避免的) sometimes but that doesn’t overrule your ability to succeed. The key is that you can’t give up your hope. Our history has seen many great achievers. Though they hoped they could make it, they also failed; however, they didn’t give up on their hope. They worked even harder and eventually succeeded.
Today when we can celebrate so many of them for their courage, remember “faith without work is dead”, so is your dream or hope. Samuel Similes says “Hope is the companion(伙伴) of power, the mother of success, for who so hopes strongly has within him the gift of miracles (奇迹).” So don’t let your hope down.

Nowadays it is common that people are buying more products and services than ever before through the Internet, so do Americans. And experts say the popularity of online sales is likely to spread to other countries. Online sales now represent as much as 10% of all retail sales in the United States. This has led traditional stores to seek new ways to keep their customers loyal.
Taking Lynne for example, she made good use of the Internet. She used the Internet to buy everything she needed for her Wedding and holiday gifts for her husband and daughter. Other than food, 90% of her purchases were made on her home computer. “I find that, by being able to go online, choose the things that I need, and have them delivered to me right at my doorstep, I eliminate all the driving, all the crowds, all the noise of that, and I usually get a better selection.”
There are a lot of people like her. Experts say American online shopping hit records in both November and December.57% of Americans have bought something electronically. Store owners worry that this growing amount of online sales will hurt their business. Cornell University marketing professor Ed Melaughlin says they can keep their customers by selling goods like clothing, which buyers may want to see and try on before purchasing. The stores could also offer things that are difficult to ship. Besides, some stores can please customers by offering to repair electronic products.
Bill Martin is the founder of Shopper Trak. His business helps stores learn about their customers. He said, “There is still a lot of emotion in the buying decision, you know, that takes place. Often you need that last sense of “Boy, this is exactly what I want before you are ready to part with money, and you can't always get that online. It's a rather cold process.”
While e-commerce worries some business owners, the only worry for delivery services is keeping up with the number of packages. UPS manager Dana Kline says her company is very busy at this time of the year.
UPS is so busy that it has filled 55,000 temporary work positions during the holiday season.
1.The purpose of this passage is to tell us ________.
A. the challenge online owners are faced with
B. the challenge e-commerce causes to traditional sales
C. the difference between online sales and traditional sales
D. the trouble that customers often meet when purchasing online
2.The example of Lynne is mentioned in the passage to show________.
A. online sales will replace traditional sales sooner or later

C. traditional stores can't offer enough food to their customers
D. online business has changed many Americans' life
3.The underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by “________”.

It is said that most people have not more than 30 friends at any given time, and 400 over the whole of their lives. However, on social networking sites, most users have about 150 friends. If these numbers are correct, then friendship means different things in different situations.
Also, there are no rules about friendship. There are no instructions about how to make friends, how to keep friendships going, and how to finish friendships if we want to move on. People have very different opinions about this: some people would die for their friends and they value them more than family. Others say that friends are temporary, only there to help each other until they are no longer needed. If people with such different views become friends, this can lead to problems.
Because of these different definitions of friendship, it is easy to be unhappy about our friendships. We may want them to be deeper or closer, or we may want to have more friends in our lives. Sometimes we simply do not have the time to develop our friendships, or we fear we have left it too late in life to start. If we move to another country or city, we have to find ways to make new friends again.
This dissatisfaction shows us how important friendships are for most of us. We should not think that it could be too late to build friendships. We also need to understand that the need to be around other people is one that is shared by many. Therefore, we should not be too frightened about starting to talk to people who in the future may become our friends: it is likely that they too would like to get closer to us. Remember what people say: strangers are friends we have not met yet.
1.According to the text, how many friends do the majority of people probably have?
A. Over 400 friends in their whole lives
B. 30 friends or fewer at a certain stage
C. 400 internet friends in their whole lives
D. 150 internet friends at a certain stage.
2.What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. There is a rule about making friends
B. People with different views can become friends
C. Friendships mean different things to different people
D. Some people would die for their friends if they need to
3.We can learn from the text that most of us_________.
A. need to be with others
B. build friendships late in life
C. are dissatisfied with our friends
D. are frightened to talk to people
4.What is the author’s attitude towards talking to a stranger?
A. Uninterested B. Cautious C. Doubtful D. Positive

People with many different relationships use small talk. The most common types of people to use small talk are those who do not know each other at all. It is also common for people who are only acquaintances (熟人), often called a “friend of a friend”, to use small talk.
There are certain “safe” topics that people usually make small talk about. The weather is probably the number one thing. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation. Another topic that is generally “safe” is current events, such as sports news and entertainment news. If there is something that you and the other speaker have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about. Negative comments about another person not involved in the conversation are not acceptable because you cannot be sure who his friends are when you do not know a person well.
People make small talk just about anywhere. Most often, small talk happens in places where people are waiting for something. For example, you might chat with another person who is waiting for the bus to arrive. Some social events (such as a party) require small talk among guests who do not know each other very well.
The most common time for small talk to happen is the first time you see or meet someone. However, the next time you see each other, you might just smile and say nothing. Do not interrupt two people in order to discuss something unimportant, such as the weather. If someone is reading a book or writing a letter in a waiting room, it is not proper to initiate a conversation either.

Obviously, most people who try to lose weight generally focus all or most of their attention on the food they eat. But what about their behavior? Are there habits they could be breaking that would also help them lose weight?
According to the Ohio State University Extension, which summarized the findings, the researchers learned people who routinely ate breakfasts, lunches, and dinners tended to have more success losing weight than people whose eating schedules were irregular. As a bonus, they were also more likely to eat a larger quantity of fruits and vegetables.
One activity that brought a disaster to people who wanted to lose weight was watching television, particularly if they ate while watching TV--especially if they ate while watching TV after 7 p.m. People who did these things, including simply watching a lot of television, tended to have a higher body mass index (BMI), as well as a higher intake of fat and sugars.
Those who ate out a lot also tended to take in more fat and sugars, while eating fewer fruits and vegetables. For the purposes of the study, eating away from home was defined not only as eating in restaurants but also eating food provided by an employer or colleagues at work, buying food at convenience stores or gas stations, or buying food for fund-raisers.
Finally, the best results were achieved by those motivated people who kept writing the track of the amount and type of exercise they did and how many calories they ate, who planned meals, and used meal replacements. Those who did these things the most generally lost more weight, ate less fat and sugars, ate more fruits and vegetables, and engaged in more physical activities.
So cutting out all those high-calorie snacks will help you lose weight. If so, apparently, will change some of your habits and behavior.
1.According to the researchers we can know that____.
A. losing weight depends on food a person eat
B. regular eating routine is good for losing weight

D. eating irregularly will leave you in a good figure
2.Why did some people fail to lose weight?
A. Because they had a particular love for sweets
B. Because they were fond of watching TV at night
C. Because they developed a kind of bad habit
D. Because they did nothing but watch TV after 7 p.m.
3.The fourth paragraph implies that____.
A. the bosses like to invite his employees to dinner
B. more and more people are content to eat out
C. eating away from home does harm to health
D. it is very convenient to have dinners outside
4.What is the author's purpose in the passage?
