American researchers say drinking tea may help strengthen the body’s defense system against infection. Doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, did the study. The team studied a chemical found in black, green, oolong and pekoe tea. This chemical is an amino acid(氨基酸) called L-theanine. The scientists say it may increase the strength of gamma delta T cells. That’s the letter T, not the drink. Gamma delta T cells are part of the body’s defense.
First, the researchers mixed some of these cells with antigens(抗原)found in the amino acid. Antigens help the body react to infection. Then the scientists added some bacteria. Within twenty-four hours, the cells produced a lot of interferon, a substance that fights infection. Cells not mixed with the antigens did not produce interferon (抗干扰素).
In the second part of the study, eleven people drank five to six cups of black tea every day. Ten other people drank the same amount of instant coffee. That is dried coffee mixed with hot water.
Two weeks later, and again two weeks after that, the researchers tested the blood of all twenty-one people. They also looked at what happened when they added bacteria to the blood cells. They found that the tea drinkers produced five times more interferon after they started drinking tea. The coffee drinkers did not produce interferon.
Doctor Jack Bukowski led the study. He says the antigens added to the gamma delta T cells were responsible for the increased reaction to the bacteria. He says that the study also showed that the cells were able to remember the bacteria and fight them again the next time.
Earlier research already has found that tea can help prevent heart disease and cancer. Doctor Bukowski says the new study must be repeated by more people. “If the findings prove to be true,” he says, “then tea drinking might also help protect against bacterial infections.” He says the amino acid L-theanine could be removed from the tea and used as a drug to strengthen the body’s defenses.

Alzheimer's disease(老年痴呆症)affects millions of people around the world. American researchers say the disease will affect more than one hundred million people worldwide by the year twenty fifty. That would be four times the current number. Researchers and doctors have been studying Alzheimer's patients for a century. Yet the cause and the cure for the mental sickness are still unknown. However, some researchers have made important steps towards understanding it.
Several early signs of the disease involve memory and thought processes. At first, patients have trouble remembering little things. Later, they have trouble remembering more important things, such as the names of their children.
There are also some physical tests that might show who is at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The tests look for proteins in brain and spinal cord(脊髓) fluid. The proteins appear to be found only in people with the disease. The protein tests correctly identify the presence of the disease in about ninety percent of patients.
Now, a much simpler physical test to predict Alzheimer's risk has been developed. Researchers found that trouble with the sense of smell can be one of the first signs of Alzheimer's. Using this information, they developed a test in which people were asked to identify twelve familiar smells. These smells included cinnamon, black pepper, chocolate, paint thinner, and smoke.
The study continued for five years. During this period, the same people were asked to take several tests measuring their memory and thought abilities. Fifty percent of those who could not identify at least four of the smells in the first test had trouble with their memory and thinking in the next five years.
Another study has shown a possible way to reduce a person's chances of developing Alzheimer's disease in old age. Researchers in Chicago found that people who use their brains more often are less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. Those who read a newspaper, or play chess or word games are about three times less likely to develop the condition.
Researchers say they still do not know what causes Alzheimer's disease. But they say these findings might help prevent the disease in the future.

If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock.According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.
Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers(慢跑者) and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates(率) from the sample group suggest that people who jog at a moderate(适合的) pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die.
The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers.The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries(动脉).Over time, this can cause serious injuries.
Peter Schnohr,a researcher in Copenhagen, said,“If your goal is to decrease(减少) risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy(策略).Anything more is not just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”
The implications(含义) of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and brisk walking may be better for us than “iron man” events, triathlons(三项全能) and long-distance running and cycling.According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher in the study,“You don’t actually have to do that much to have a good impact(影响) on your health. And perhaps you shouldn’t actually do too much”.

Say sorry to your wife---it may help her live longer, according to scientists.
“Sorry” may be the hardest word, but scientists say it could be one of the healthiest. Researchers have discovered that women who receive an apology for hurtful behavior suffer less stress and possible damage to their heart than those who don’t.
It is said that the heartbeat of a wronged woman returns to normal 20 percent quicker after a well-timed “sorry” than without it. But for men, their heartbeat takes longer to recover, according to the research.
The research was undertaken by American scientists using 29 men and 59 women whose diastolic blood pressure was measured throughout an experiment. Diastolic blood pressure
is a measure of pressure in the blood vessels( 血管 ) between heartbeats---if it is continuously high it can increase the chances of heart attacks.
The men and women were asked to undertake a difficult mathematical task. They were told they had five minutes to complete it but were disturbed after a minute and told rudely to carry out the task more quickly. They were disturbed twice more before five minutes had passed and told to speed up. Finally they were told, “ You’re obviously not good enough.” Two minutes later researchers said sorry to half of the men and women.
The researchers found that, on average, the women’s diastolic blood pressure dropped back to normal 20 percent---quicker if they received an apology from the researchers, while the men’s took 20 percent longer to return to normal. One of the researchers said, “Results indicates that the effects of apology and forgiveness on women are greater.”

Research shows that playful teasing between parents and their children can be a way to strengthen relationships, bring up difficult topics, and just have fun. 1. Carol Bishop says, “You need to recognize if they are enjoying it,” There are also rules about what is okay and not okay to tease your child about. 2. Instead, tease kids about safe topics, like a messy room, or things that can be easily changed.
Teasing should also be a two-way street. 3. If they go too far making fun of you, be sure not to blow up. Instead, help them to learn boundaries and what may hurt others.
Teasing about a disappointing grade should only be used as a gentle reminder to study or do homework. It shouldn't be focused on the ability because that could make the situation worse. It’s not wrong to say to your child, “I'm disappointed that you got a C.”4. You need to examine if there is a learning disability or maybe they are depressed or being bullied.
From monsters under the bed to darkness and noises, fears that may seem silly to an adult may be very real to a child. 5. In fact, it could make them worse. Teasing a child who is frightened about something is not a way for them to expand their horizon—you need to make them feel secure.
A.Kids often feel hurt when teased by others.
B.Topics like appearance and weight are prohibited.
C.You have to be willing to let your child tease you about things.
D.But then you must work with them to figure out the cause.

A nice warm cup of tea a day might keep glaucoma (青光眼) at bay, according to new research published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
Risk of developing glaucoma — one of the leading causes of blindness around the world that currently affects nearly 58 million people — might be lowered by drinking hot tea daily. The disease causes fluid to build up inside the eye that puts pressure onto the optic nerve (视神经). Previous research said that caffeine (咖啡因) might prevent this build-up but the new findings showed that drinking decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee, iced caffeinated tea and caffeinated sodas had no effect on glaucoma risk.
In the new study, researchers looked at the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the 2005 — 2006 year of 10,000 adults and children. The data is from interviews with the patients, their physical exams and blood tests. That specific year also included eye tests for glaucoma in 1678 adults and showed that about 5% had the disease. Those patients were asked how many caffeinated and decaffeinated drinks they consumed during that year and how often. The results of the questionnaire showed that those who drank hot tea daily were 74% less likely to develop glaucoma than their peers who didn’t.
“Tea has long been recognized to have various chemicals that contribute to lowering the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes,” the researchers said. But further study is needed to determine if things like the size of the cup, type of tea and length of brew (冲泡) time influence the results.
1.What can we learn about glaucoma?
A. It can be cured by drinking hot tea daily.
B. It is a great threat to people’s eyesight.
C. It affects nearly 58 million people yearly.
D. It is caused by too much pressure on the eyes.
2.What did previous research find?
A. Drinking coffee reduces glaucoma risk.
B. Iced tea has no effect on glaucoma risk.
C. Caffeine does good to glaucoma patients.
D. Caffeine causes fluid to build up in the eyes.
3.How was the new study carried out?
A. By interviewing patients.
B. By testing participants’ eyes.
C. By handing out questionnaires.
D. By studying data from previous studies.
4.What does the underlined phrase “those patients” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The 10,000 adults. B. The 1,678 adults.
C. The 5% adults. D. The 74% adults.
