Imagine one day, the water taps in your house stop running. You have to buy water from shops. And still there isn’t enough for everyone. Your mother has to save the family’s shower water to do other things. Would you be able to stand that kind of life?
Probably not. But that’s what kids in Yemen are experiencing. Experts said Yemen is going to be the first country in the world to run out of water. According to a report, the capital, Sanaa, will run out of drinking water as early as 2025.
Because of the shortage, the government often cuts the water supply. Hannan, an 18-year-old from Lahej, told the Times: “In a good week we’ll have a water supply all week. But then the following week there will be water only for a day or two.”
Hannan said only rich people have enough water to use. They can buy water from the shops or from the water truck. Private companies own the trucks. They travel around the city every day to sell water – at very high prices.
“A lot of people can’t afford it,” she said.
The average person in Yemen uses 100 to 200 cubic meters of water per year. That is far below the international water poverty line of 1,000 cubic meters.
The government is thinking of making use of seawater. But it will cost a lot and it may not happen soon enough to help the people of Yemen.

A.buying water from shops
B.drinking dirty water

D.washing clothes with used water
3. Hannan described _____.
A.what her life is like
B.how beautiful Lahej is
C.how people use water fully
D.how heavy the traffic in Lahej is
4.The Yemen Government _____.
A.has found a practical solution
B.only cares about rich people
C.may try to make use of seawater
D.can do nothing about the water supply

C.the capital of Yemen is developing fast
D.private companies make a lot of money

The water we drink and use was running short. We all have to learn what to stop wasting water.
One of the step that we should take is to find ways of reusing it. Today in the most large cities, fresh water is used only once and then it runs in waste system. But that is possible to pipe the used water to a purifying factory, there the used water can be treated with chemical materials by the workers so that it can reused. But even if every large city purified and reused it's water, we still would have enough water.

Where we live,on the eastern shore of Maryland, the gentle waters run in and out like fingers slimming at the tips.
The Canada geese know this place,as do the white swans and the ducks. In autumn, they come home for the winter. Once or twice each year, snow and frozen rain move into the area. When this happens,if the river is at its narrowest, there is a freeze which hardens the water to ice.
One morning,a friend of mine set the breakfast table beside the huge window, which overlooked the Tred Avon River. Suddenly she leaned forward and cried out,“There is a goose out there.”
We saw the figure of a large Canada goose, very still, its wings folded tight to its sides, its feet frozen into the ice.
Then from the dark skies, she saw a line of swans. They floated from the top of the sky downward and at last landed on the ice. My friend was on her feet now, with one hand against her mouth, unbelieving. As the swans surrounded the frozen goose, she feared that life it still had might be pecked(啄) out by those great swan bills.
Instead, those bills began to work on the ice. The long necks were lifted and curved down, again and again. It went on for a long time. At last, the goose’s head was lifted. Its body was pulled. Then the goose was free and stood on the ice. And the swans stood in the air watching. Then,as if it had cried,“I cannot fly.” Four of the swans came down around it. Their powerful beaks chipped off the ice held in the feathers. Slowly, the goose spread its wings as far as they would go,and moved slowly into the sky.
This is a true story. I just think of it in the bad moment, and from it comes only one hopeful question:If so for birds, why not for man?

D.They stayed with it and protected it.

It was a dark and stormy night. I was about to go to bed when I heard a tapping sound on my window.
“Who's there?” I shouted. Suddenly there was a flash of lightning; I saw a face at the window. It looked like an alien(外星人)--- an alien that I had seen on the television show, “the X files”.
I felt very scared. I ran to my bed and pulled my blanket over my head. I started to shout for my parents but there was no reply. Then I remembered that they were at a fancy dress party.
I looked out of my blanket but it was too dark to see anything. Then I heard footsteps. They were getting louder and louder. I ran to my drawer to take out my camera and started to take pictures in the direction of the window. Soon the footsteps died off.
The grandfather clock struck. It was 12 midnight. I went back to my bed and tried to sleep. But I could not sleep. I felt too frightened. I sat up, and my mind was full of thoughts. Time passed --- finally, I fell asleep.
I woke up only after eight and decided to find out what it had been. I found some footprints outside my bedroom window. I measured them with a ruler and found them to be exactly the same size as my father's shoes. I then went to town to get the film developed. I didn't realize that I did not use the flash until I saw the black photos.
When I reached home, I told my father the whole incident and he started to laugh. I started laughing too when he told me that he had dressed up as an alien for the party. Today, I am still amused to think I was so afraid of my own father.
1.The writer took photos _____.
A. to find out what it was B. just for fun
C. to scare the alien away D. for the party
2.What could the writer see in the photos?
A. An alien’s face. B. His father’s face.
C. Nothing. D. A flash.
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The writer was afraid of his father. B. The writer stayed alone that night.
C. The writer didn’t sleep that night. D. The writer dressed up as an alien.

Life on earth depends on water, and there is no substitute for it. The current assumption is that our basic needs for water—whether for drinking, agriculture, industry or the raising of fish—will always have to be met. Given this premise (前提), there are two basic routes we can go; more equal access to water or better engineering solutions.
Look at the engineering solutions first. A lot of my research concentrates on what happens to wetlands when you build dams in river basins, particularly in Africa. The ecology of such areas is almost entirely driven by the seasonal changes of the river—the pulse of the water. And the fact is that if you build a dam, you generally spoil the downstream ecology. In the past, such problems have been hidden by a lack of information. But in the near future, governments will have no excuses for their ignorance.
The engineers’ ability to control water flows has created new kinds of unpredictability, too. Dams in Africa have meant fewer fish, less grazing and less floodplain (洪泛区) agriculture, none of which were expected. And there average economic life is assumed to be thirty years. Dams don’t exist forever, but what will replace them is not clear.
The challenge for the future is to find new means of controlling water. Although GM technology(转基因) will allow us to breed better dry-land crops, there is no market for companies to develop crops suitable for the micro-climates of the Sahel and elsewhere in Africa. Who is going to pay for research on locally appropriate crops in the Third World?
1.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.The engineering solutions to water resource and their limitation.
B.The challenge for the future.
C.The basic means of controlling water.
D.The challenge for developing crops.
2.The author suggests that governments will have no excuse for their careless ignorance in the future because _____.
A.The ecological destruction will be known to the public by researchers
B.The ecological destruction will no longer be a problem in the future
C.The future is an information age
D.Governments will face greater challenge in the future
3.Which of the following statements is NOT true for meeting our basic needs for water?
A.Water resource should be used more reasonably.
B.More dams should be built in river basins.
C.More wetlands should be protected from destruction.
D.More dry-land crops could be developed in Africa.
4.The last sentence probably implies that _____.
A.No one will invest in developing locally appropriate crops in Africa
B.Researchers have no interest in developing dry-land crops
C.Research on locally appropriate crops in the Third World may be profitable
D.There is less water resource in the Third World
