I start to wonder what else had changed since I’d been gone. My parents are in an awkward puzzle, wondering how to treat me now----whether to treat me—still their daughter—as one of them, an adult, or as the child they feel they sent away months earlier.
I run into two of my best friends from high school; we stare at each other, expressionless. We ask the simple questions and give simple answers. It’s as if we have nothing to say to each other. I wonder how things have changed so much in such a small amount of time. We used to laugh and promise that no matter how far away we were, our love for each other would never change. Their interests don’t interest me anymore, and I find myself unable to relate my life to theirs.
I had been so excited to come home, but now I just look at it all and wonder: Is it me? Why hadn’t the world stood still here while I was gone? My room isn’t the same, my friends and I don’t share the same promise, and my parents don’t know how to treat me—or who I am, for that matter.
I get back to school feeling half-satisfied, but not disappointed. I sit up in my bed in my dorm room, surrounded by my pictures, dolls. As I wonder what has happened, I realize that I can’t expect the world to stand still and move forward at the same time. I can change and expect that things at home will stay the same. I have to find comfort in what has changed and what is new; keep the memories, but live in the present.
A few weeks later, I’m packing again, this time for winter break. My mom meets me at the door. I have come home accepting the changes, not only in my surroundings, but most of all in me.

It had been three months since Ms Miller had started teaching. She was gradually being able to understand all her students, except one, Bob. Bob was the only boy who came to school dressed untidily and sat in the class completely lost in his own world. His performance had been deteriorating gradually with every single day.
Ms Miller searched through the progress reports of Bob and was shocked to see Bob used to be the topper in his class. Bob's performance began to slowly decline when his mother fell ill. It was my first day back home since starting college. A lot had changed in the last year. Not with my hometown but with me. I had left as a 17-year-old boy and had now returned as an 18-year-old man. In the city, I was living on my own, had a part-time job and was studying. Even the government recognized I was an adult: I had a driver’s license. So here I was, on my summer vacation, walking down the main street with my father, desperate for him to acknowledge how mature I was. When his recognition failed to appear, I took matters into my own hands. “Dad,” I said casually, “I’m thirsty. Let’s go for a beer.” It was the first time I’d ever mentioned beer in front of my father, let alone ask him to drink one with me.
He turned to me with a curious expression on his face. “A beer ? Well I guess you’re old enough now. Let’s go to Sailors’ Bar. It’s where my cousin Tom, your uncle, used to drink. You remember him, right?”
I had only some vague(模糊的) memories of my uncle. He was the black sheep of the family. We didn’t talk about him much. “What ever happened to Uncle Tom, Dad? I haven’t seen him in years,” I said as we continued towards the bar.
“Neither have I, unfortunately. He was a good kid once. But things changed,” my father said sadly. As a boy, he explained, there had been no better-behaved boy than Tom. But after leaving school, he moved to the city and fell in with bad company. He started going out every night, drinking in nightclubs and playing cards. Soon he lost everything and had to beg his mum to pay his debts. She agreed on the condition he returned home.
My dad took a deep breath and continued his tale. “Things settled down for a while. He married a lovely woman, gave up his bad habits. But it didn’t last. He was soon back to his old ways. He couldn’t resist. He was at Sailors’ Bar almost every night. His poor mother died of grief and shame. His wife followed her soon after.
“What ruined him was alcohol. He told me once, when a man begins drinking, he never knows where it’ll end. ‘So’, Tom warned me, ‘beware of your first drink!’
“He went from bad to worse. Last year Tom sent me a letter saying he had been found guilty of stealing, and sent to prison for ten years.”
Dad finished talking just as we reached the front of Sailors’ Bar. “Anyway, here we are. Let’s go in,” he said. But I understood. I put my arm around my father and said, “I’m not thirsty any more, Dad. Let’s go home.”
1.Why did the young man invite his father to drink a beer?

B. Because he wanted to show he was an adult.
C. Because he wanted to impress his father casually.
D. Because he wanted to discuss his Uncle Tom.

A. The family was concerned about Tom because he was always in trouble.
B. The family showed sympathy to Tom because he was unfortunate.
C. The family felt ashamed of Tom because he was a failure.
D. The family felt disgusted about him because he was different.
3.What was the main source of Uncle Tom’s problems?
A. His overly-strict family.
B. His addiction to card games.
C. The deaths of his mother and wife.
D. His inability to control his drinking.
4.In the story, the father told his son about Tom in order to ________.

Haw wondered why he had always thought that a change would lead to something worse. Now he realized that change could lead to something better.
“Why didn't I see this before?”he asked himself.
Then he raced through the Maze with greater strength and agility. Before long,he found a Cheese Station and became excited as he noticed little pieces of New Cheese near the entrance.
They were types of Cheeses he had never seen before, but they looked great. He tried them and found that they were delicious. He ate most of the New Cheese bits that were available and put a few in his pocket to have later and perhaps share with Hem.He began to regain his strength.
He entered the Cheese Station with great excitement. But,to his disappointment,he found it was empty.Someone had already been there and had left only the few bits of New Cheese.
He realized that if he had moved sooner,he would very likely have found a good deal of New Cheese here.
Haw decided to go back and see if Hem was ready to join him.
As he retraced his steps,he stopped and wrote on the wall:
The quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you find new cheese.
After a while,Haw made his way back to Cheese Station C and found Hem.He offered Hem bits of New Cheese, but was turned down.
Hem appreciated his friend's gesture but said,”I don't think I would like New Cheese. It's not what I'm used to.I want my own Cheese back and I'm not going to change until I get what I want.”
Haw just shook his head in disappointment and reluctantly went back out on his own.As he returned to the farthest point he had reached in the Maze,he missed his friend, but realized he liked what he was discovering.Even before he found what he hoped would be a great supply of New Cheese,if ever,he knew that what made him happy wasn't just having Cheese.
He was happy when he wasn't being run by his fear.He liked what he was doing now.
Knowing this,Haw didn't feel as weak as he did when he stayed in Cheese Station C with no Cheese.Just realizing he was not letting his fear stop him,and knowing that he had taken a new direction, nourished him and gave him strength.
Now he felt that it was just a question of time before he found what he needed. In fact,he sensed he had already found what he was looking for.
He smiled as he realized:
It Is Safer To Search In The Maze Than Remain In A Cheseless Station
Haw realized again,as he had once before, that what you are afraid of is never as bad as what you imagine. The fear you let build up in your mind is worse than the situation that actually exists.
He'd been so afraid of never finding New Cheese that he hadn't even wanted to start looking. But since starting his journey,he had found enough Cheese in the corridors to keep him going. Now he looked forward to finding more.Just looking ahead was becoming exciting
His old thinking had been clouded by his worries and fears.
But that had changed in the days since he had left Cheese Station C.
Now he realized it was natural for change to continually occur, whether you expect it or not change could surprise you only if you didn't expect it and weren't looking for it.
When he realized he had changed his beliefs,he paused to write on the wall:
Old Beliefs Do Not Lead You To The New Cheese
Haw hadn't found any Cheese yet, but,as he ran through the Maze,he thought about what he had already learned.
Haw now realized that his new beliefs were encouraging him to behave in a new way.He was behaving differently from the way he had when he had kept returning to the same cheeseless station.
He now knew that when you change what you believe, you change what you do.
You can believe that a change will harm you and resist it.Or you can believe that finding New Cheese will help you,and embrace the change.
It all depends on what you choose to believe.
He wrote on the wall:
When You See That You Can Find New Cheese,You Change Course
