At the age of four, I suffered from epilepsy (癫痫). Having a physical disability and a learning disability, I felt like I was an outcast. When I was a teenager, I was being told what I couldn’t do in the future. My doctor said that I had brain damage and I wouldn’t be able to do analytical things. I wanted to be a counselor (顾问) more than anything else in the world, but he crushed my dream.
When I graduated from high school in 1994, I entered a local community college. I met two people that impressed me a lot. One was my college professor, who thought I was an amazing, articulate (能说会道的) student. She encouraged me to apply for the Human Services program at Western Washington University. The other one was my best friend, who helped me with my math. He showed great faith in my abilities. He himself was visually damaged, but he never quit on his dreams. I admire his positive attitude very much.
In 1997, I decided to attend Western Washington University. I knew exactly what I wanted and I was determined that no one could stop me. My parents had a hard time grasping that I could go to university. They did not want to see me get hurt. But I was willing to get hurt. To me, that was part of growing and gaining experience. I wanted to experience the same opportunities as everyone else.
Later, not only did I receive my bachelor’s degree in Human Services program, but I got a master’s degree in Psychology! After finally becoming the counselor, I wanted to explore a new direction. This new direction had something to do with writing and inspiring others to see their inner power, as well as their freedom to choose their own life path.
Now, I am fortunate to have family and friends standing by me through all the successes and failures. They remind me that I am worth it.

UNICEF reports that 40 million children below the age of 15 suffer from abuse(虐待) and neglect. The USA National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse finds 3 million new reports of child abuse or neglect every year.
According to such information on human rights abuses of children, the United Nations declared 2010 as the International Year of Youth. In answer to the common human rights abuses of young people, Dr. Mary Shuttleworth of Youth for Human Rights International(YHRI) recently completed her seventh annual World Tour to five continents in eighty days. The purpose of the tour is to promote the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights to tens of thousands of children and officials.
According to UNICEF, 1.2 million children are illegally traded all over the world every year.
Sold as goods, these children are forced into inhuman labor, denied basic education and robbed of their childhoods. Youth who do not know their rights are easily cheated by ill-intentioned men. That is why YHRI thinks highly of education.
“When the United Nations declared 2010 as the International Year of Youth, I knew that their human rights had to be greater than ever,” Dr. Shuttleworth said. The tour reached Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Ecuador, Brazil, South Africa, Swaziland, Portugal, Sardinia, Sicily, Italy, Greece, Taiwan, Japan, Hawaii and Los Angeles.
The YHRI World Tour 2010 has reached tens of thousands of students as well as officials, educators, and religious leaders and thus promotes human rights education to millions more.

Four out of ten parents in the UK spend between £100 and £500 on their children’s birthday parties, according to a survey. Four in ten parents of children under 18, who were questioned in a survey, admitted that they felt pressured into organizing more expensive birthday parties for their children than they would like to.
How much parents spend on their children’s birthday parties is one of the most frequently discussed topics on parenting websites. Here is one comment on Mumsnet summing up the thoughts of many parents: “Where we live everyone hires places, entertainers and so on. I don’t want to compare with my rich neighbors, but I want my son to have what all his classmates have.”
The research was carried out on behalf of the children’s charity, Lumos, set up by the author JK Rowling. Just 13 percent of parents spent £50 or less in the past year on their children’s parties.
Many children’s clowns(小丑) or entertainers charge £150 or more for an hour, and parents often feel it necessary to book a special place. Even without these, the cost of plates, the cake and party bags can mount up. Party Pieces, a company set up by Carole and Michael Middleton, charge about £16 for a birthday cake for a party with 16 guests, £22 for table decorations and up to £48 for party bags.
Many children of famous people have increasingly expensive parties, often seen in famous magazines. Suri Cruise, the daughter of actor Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes, enjoyed a £100,000 birthday party according to a report.
Georgette Mulheir of Lumos, said,“Parents in the UK are under increasing pressure to spend more and more money on birthday parties for their children and their children’s friends.”
