Four in 10 Chinese complain about the great gap between large investments in education and its returns, a recent nationwide survey has showed.
The Horizon Research Consultancy Group polled 3,355 residents aged 16 to 60 in both urban and rural areas, including Beijing and Shanghai.
The survey found that only 16 percent of respondents believed their investments on education gave good returns.
Those with higher education voiced greater disappointment at the quality of education received, the survey showed.
People in the rural areas generally gave more positive feedback(反馈)on the quality of education than those from the cities, the survey found.
"Our education has been focusing on an examination-oriented system," Huo Qingwen, the deputy director of language education testing service center under the Beijing Foreign Studies University, told China Daily yesterday.
"The survey result doesn't surprise me, as I had heard complaints not only from the students, but also from the teachers who have been asked to focus more about the exam-passing rate," Huo said.
"The job market is still hungry for talented staff, but many graduates are not competent(胜任的) because the posts require more practical experience and creative ability of workers," Huo added.
Most university graduates prefer jobs in large cities, causing an imbalance in human resources between urban and rural areas, Hong said.
The graduates would get better job options if they chose to work at the grassroots (基础的) level because of the government's preferential policies, including the waiving of tuition for those willing to work in the country's rural and western regions, he added.
About 580,000 graduates last year found county- or village-level jobs, and more than 550,000 got jobs in the central and western regions, Ministry of Education figures showed.
"Because many graduates focus only on jobs with high salaries and that are directly relevant to their specialties, they miss other good work opportunities," Kong Xiang, a Beijing graduate who works as an English teacher in a college located at a remote area in Yunnan province, said.
The recent survey showed that education costs form one-quarter of an urban family's income, while it forms one-third of a rural family's income.

About 90 percent of Chinese believe the polarization(分化) between the rich and poor is “serious” in China, according to a survey conducted by China Youth Daily. And more than 80 percent of the respondents(对象) surveyed said something must be done to narrow the expanding gap between the rich and poor, while 14.1 percent said it was necessary.
The polarization has aroused wide concern among the public in recent years. The State Development and Reform Commission(国家发改委) said the Gini Coefficient had reached 0.47 for China, up from o.29 two decades ago. Usually, a country with a number above 0.4 is warned to pay attention to the income inequality problem.
To find out the people’s view, the survey covered 10,250 respondents, between the ages of 20 and 30 with a college education and a monthly salary between 1,000 and 3,000 yuan. Surprisingly, most disagreed with the view of experts who claim the urban-rural difference is causing the widening gap. More than 70 percent of the respondents believed that “ the group of special interests” is the prime reason for the polarization, followed by “people in power” 68 percent, and “bosses” 50 percent.
Another unexpected finding is that almost all agreed that a good educational background and knowledge were not the decisive factors in gaining wealth. About 95 percent said rich people are not necessarily those who are able to speak English or have a college education.
Today in China, rich people , accounting for 10 percent of the population, control 45 percent of the total social fortune, and poor people, also 10 percent of the population, only control 1.5 percent, according to an investigation published by the National Bureau of Statistics last June.
1. It can be inferred that the Gini Coefficient ( in paragraph 2) would probably be _____.
A. the unit used in advanced mathematics
B. the degree of a country’s development
C. the level of the citizen’s living standard
D. a measure of income inequality
2. Experts hold the view that the main reason for the polarization is _____.
A. the urban-rural difference B. the group of special interests
C. the people in power D. the bosses
3.Which of the following can show the correct proportion(比例) of the social fortune among population?
4.What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Close the Gap between the Rich and Poor
B. Surveys conducted by China Youth Daily
C. Higher education, Higher pay
D. Rich-Poor Divide Serious, Study Finds

Four out of ten parents in the UK spend between £100 and £500 on their children’s birthday parties, according to a survey. Four in ten parents of children under 18, who were questioned in a survey, admitted that they felt pressured into organizing more expensive birthday parties for their children than they would like to.
How much parents spend on their children’s birthday parties is one of the most frequently discussed topics on parenting websites. Here is one comment on Mumsnet summing up the thoughts of many parents: “Where we live everyone hires places, entertainers and so on. I don’t want to compare with my rich neighbors, but I want my son to have what all his classmates have.”
The research was carried out on behalf of the children’s charity, Lumos, set up by the author JK Rowling. Just 13 percent of parents spent £50 or less in the past year on their children’s parties.
Many children’s clowns(小丑) or entertainers charge £150 or more for an hour, and parents often feel it necessary to book a special place. Even without these, the cost of plates, the cake and party bags can mount up. Party Pieces, a company set up by Carole and Michael Middleton, charge about £16 for a birthday cake for a party with 16 guests, £22 for table decorations and up to £48 for party bags.
Many children of famous people have increasingly expensive parties, often seen in famous magazines. Suri Cruise, the daughter of actor Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes, enjoyed a £100,000 birthday party according to a report.
Georgette Mulheir of Lumos, said,“Parents in the UK are under increasing pressure to spend more and more money on birthday parties for their children and their children’s friends.”
1.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. Children’s birthday parties put their parents under financial pressure in the UK.

C. Parents pay more and more attention to their children’s birthday parties.

Glancing at the large room through her blue eyes, four-year-old Nicole in her oversize short skirt began to cry. “It’s okay, honey,” I tried to encourage. “Come play with the other children.” But the more I persuaded, the more the water flowed.
Every week for the past eighteen years, I’ve spent Tuesdays with a dozen kids dressed in satin ribbons, feathers, butterfly wings and plastic jewelry. These afternoons are free flowing and non-threatening but for some strange reason, Nicole saw this as the final kiss of death.
In her mind, she was going to be left all alone with a strange woman and several other children. Uncontrollable tears rapidly started to flow and there wouldn’t be enough tissues in the whole building to mop up the flood.
Tip toeing quickly to the door, I gently called to her father. “Just sit in here for a while until she warms up,” I said. Standing next to his first born, Rich took his daughter's hand and led her to the centre of the room. Slowly he pushed, but again the damn broke. “Daddy, don’t leave me!” Nicole cried. “Don't make me do this.” Bending down on his knees until they were nose-to-nose, Rich gently whispered in her ear, “I’ll do it with you. There’s nothing to be afraid of.” Holding her entire young hand around his middle two fingers, the pair went on to skip around the floor.
“Wow!” I cheered. “You deserve a prize. I’ve never seen a dad do that before.”
For a brief second Rich paused, and then with a smile, he replied, “Isn’t this part of the job?”
That wonderful moment was two years ago and I've thought of it often, especially when I see how well Nicole performs in class. More importantly, however, I’ve remembered it because it takes me back to my own dance beginnings with my father.
From the moment I was born, music spoke to me. The moment the radio or record player was turned on, I flay my arms and legs about the room in wild fashion. Most of the time, I was fine to perform alone, but the minute my dad walked into the room, I’d jump into his arms, hug him tight and place my tiny feet on top of his highly shined shoes.
While this memory is sweet, the real reason I hold it dear to my heart is because of what went behind his action. My father was not the most gifted creature on two legs when it came to dancing, but he’d stepped out of his comfort zone(区域)and danced because he knew how much I loved it. For him, helping his only daughter develop, despite how uncomfortable it made him feel, was part of his job.
As a child, my father did what he was told and lived as expected. But when it came to his own children, he allowed us the chance to follow our own path and we were never forced to be like him, live like him or think like him. He provided an environment where my three brothers and I were permitted to explore our own jungle until we found the life that was right for us.
To all you fathers who’ve influenced your children's lives by stepping out of your comfort zones to dance, whether it is in mind, body or soul-this one’s for you! You give a child the courage to stand on the center stage of life.
1.Why was Nicole so sad at her first dancing class?
A. She was asked to mop up the floor. B. She had to be left with the strangers.
C. She didn't like the dancing dresses. D. She was threatened by the older boys.
2.What does the father mean by saying “Isn’t this part of the job?” in Paragraph 6?
A. Dancing with their daughter is a father’s part-time job.
B. It’s a father’s job to force her daughter to learn dancing.
C. Fathers are always there to help their daughter if necessary.
D. Fathers are required to accompany their daughter in dancing classes.
3.What do we know about the author’s father?
A. He was fond of dancing.
B. He liked to make choices for his children.
C. He required his children to follow his path.
D. He tried to live up to his parents’ expectations.
4.What is the best title for this passage?
A. Dance with my father B. Stay in your comfort zone
C. Follow your own path D. Find a dancing partner

When children start kindergarten, evident gaps in science knowledge already exist between Whites and minorities and between youngsters from upper-income and low-income families. And they often deepen into significant achievement gaps by the end of eighth grade if they are not dealt with during elementary school.
The findings suggest that, in order for the United States to maintain(维持) long-term scientific and economic competitiveness in the world, policymakers need to renew efforts to ensure access(n.使用或见到的机会,权利) to high-quality, early learning experiences in childcare settings, preschools and elementary schools.
The researchers’ study tracked 7,757 children from their start in kindergarten to the end of eighth grade. Researchers found that, among kindergarteners with low levels of general knowledge, 62 percent were struggling in science by the time they reached third grade and 54 percent were struggling in that subject in eighth grade. And general knowledge gaps between minorities and Whites were already large at the time when students began kindergarten.
“Children growing up in low-income families typically experience comparatively fewer early opportunities to learn about the natural and social sciences,” the authors wrote. “Their parents often have lower educational levels and therefore less science knowledge themselves as well as fewer resources available to direct the children’s academic growth. Children raised in poverty often attend poorly resourced schools that futher limit their academic opportunities.”
Morgan said that, within families, parents who regularly talk and interact with toddlers(学步的儿童) can point out and explain physical, natural and social events occurring around them daily. This might help youngsters learn facts and concepts that will prepare them to take better advantage of science instruction they receive during elementary and middle school.
1.Which may be the possible result of the gaps in science knowledge during kindergarten?
A. Children from rich families will behave better in life.
B. Children from minorities may have less desire for learning.
C. Children’s academic performance afterwards will be affected.
D. The gaps will disappear automatically when children grow up.
2.What did the researchers suggest policymakers do?
A. Make superior education available to children.
B. Narrow income gaps between different families.
C. Give extra lessons to children from poor families.
D. Strengthen competitive awareness of kindergarteners.
3.What can parents do to help their toddlers learn?
A. Give them more nutritious food
B. Offer them more learning resources.
C. Let them attend science courses for kids
D. Greate learning opportunities in daily life.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
