My 17-year-old daughter went off to college and having her away from home brought back memories of watching Peter Pan when she was little. In the classic TV production, one scene in particular impressed me: when Mrs Darling puts her children into bed. As she turns off the last of the night lights, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says, “Dear night lights, protect my sleeping children.” As a mother, I know how much she loves her children.
It has been several weeks since we took our daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting (适应) well after a short period of homesickness. For us, though, it’s another story. Like most parents, I love checking in on my children at night. But now she’s gone, and I find nighttimes the hardest. I miss her most at night.
In my neighborhood, most of the parents whose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. My husband is filled with anxiety. One friend talked about getting this sick feeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college drop-off. We complained that many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while we had them.
For us moms, seeing Toy Story 3 only made the sadness worse as we watched the character Andy, who is the same age as our kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. And it’s not just “first-time” parents like me. Two moms who have kids already well into college said the separation didn’t get any easier. “You feel like something has been taken away from inside you,” said one of them.
I imagine things will get easier with time, especially as I see my daughter adjust to college life. Meanwhile, as I keep my cell phone close to me in bed and text my daughter goodnight and sweet dreams every night, I like to think that messages serve as a night light that keeps her safe.
1.The writer was deeply impressed by the scene in Peter Pan because ___________.
A. she watched the scene with her daughter
B. the scene was very exciting and interesting
C. the scene taught her and her daughter a good lesson
D. the scene showed a mother’s deep love for her children
2.After he daughter went to college, the writer ___________.
A. didn’t get used to the change for a long time
B. often cried as she missed her daughter so much
C. realized she hadn’t done enough for the daughter
D. failed to have a good sleep every night
3.What is the underlined word “melancholy” in Paragraph 3 similar in meaning to?
A. Happiness. B. Anger.
C. Sadness. D. Excitement.
4.According to the last paragraph, why did the writer keep her cell phone close to her in bed?
A. To call her daughter any time
B. To wait for her daughter’s calls
C. To say good night to her daughter
D. To wait for her daughter’s messages

My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of time and energy in the yard to get it looking like the way it does today. We live on a corner, higher than street level, and the entire side of the yard is surrounded by a professionally built rock wall. The front of the house though is another story because instead of a wall along the sidewalk, the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish.
We did the best we could with what we had to work with and called this area our “rock garden”. Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants, Denise or I would stick them out front, just to bring some color to the area. We would do all of the yard work on our own, even the tiring weed-pulling.
Last summer I had reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify, I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise claimed that she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could figure out what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant, it appeared to be a sunflower with a tall skinny stalk(茎,杆) and only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.
That’s when I realized that if a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability of doing the same thing. Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can attain the same nourishment(营养) and growth as well.
Stand tall like the sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you. You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.
1.We can know from the first paragraph that _______.
A. there is a wall along the sidewalk
B. the author’s home is made of rock walls
C. the author finished building his home hurriedly
D. the author’s family have lived in this home for nine years
2.The author found it unusual that_______.
A. the mystery plant turned out to be a sunflower B. the sunflower had a tall stalk and only one head
C. the sunflower grew under and around a big rock D. the sunflower had started where the stalk was seen
3.Which of the following best describes the sunflower?
A. Brave and stubborn. B. Confident and persistent.
C. Optimistic and modest. D. Mysterious and devoted.
4.What can be inferred from this passage?
A. Human beings are able to remove obstacles.
B. The universal truth made the sunflower survive.
C. A big rock blocked out the sunlight of the sunflower.
D. We can achieve success as long as we are self-confident.

高三英语阅读理解中等难度题查看答案及解析
Amy Chua may well be very nuts. What kind of a mother will drag her then 7-year-old daughter’s dollhouse out to the car and tell her that it is going to be donated if the poor kid doesn’t master a difficult piano composition by the next day? What kind of a mother will inform her daughter that she is nothing but “garbage”? And what kind of mother will believe, as Chua tells readers, that “an A- is not always a good grade”? The only activities her children should be permitted to do are those in which they can eventually win a medal, which must be gold.
What kind of a mother she is? Why, a mother who is raising her kids in the typical Chinese way, rather than the Western way. In her new book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Chua tells her adventures in Chinese parenting, and — so nuts as she may be — she is also mesmerizing (迷惑的). Chua’s voice is that of a happy, knowledgeable serial killer — think Hannibal Lecter — who’s explaining how he’s going to cut his next victim, as though it’s the most self-evidently normal behavior.
There is another attractive aspect of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. There are methods to Chua’s madness, enough method to stir up self-doubt in those readers who support the more educating parenting styles. It is trusted that Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is going to be a book club and parenting blog phenomenon; there will be fevered debate over Chua’s tough love strategies, which include unchangeable bans on such Western indulgences (纵容) as sleepovers, play dates, and any after class activities except practicing musical instruments, which must be limited between the violin or the piano.
The back story to Chua’s book is this — she is the daughter of a couple of Chinese immigrants and is now a professor at Yale Law School and the author of two best-selling “big-think” books on “free-market democracy” and “the fall of empires”. When Chua married her husband, her fellow Yale law professor and a novelist Jed Rubenfeld, they agreed that their children would be brought up in “the Chinese way,” in which punishingly hard work, enforced by parents produces excellence; excellence, in turn, produces satisfaction. The success of this strategy is hard to debate. Their older daughter is a piano talent who played at Carnegie Hall when she was 14 or so. The second, a more rebellious (叛逆的) daughter, Lulu, is a gifted violinist. Chua rode the girls hard, making sure they practiced at least three hours a day even on vacations, when she would call ahead to arrange access to practice in hotel lobby bars and basement storage rooms.
Chua also rarely refrained (抑制) from criticizing her daughters. She explains: Chinese parents can do things that would seem unimaginable to Westerners. Chinese mothers can say to their daughters, “Hey so fatty, lose some weight.” By contrast, Western parents have to tiptoe around the issue, talking in terms of "health" and never ever mentioning the f-word, and their kids still end up in treatment for eating disorders and negative self-image. ... Western parents are concerned about their children’s minds. Chinese parents aren’t. They assume strength, not weakness, and as a result they behave very differently.
1.The underlined word “nuts” in the first and second paragraphs most probably means _____.
A. intelligent B. crazy
C. difficult D. eager
2.Which of the following practices are tough love strategies EXCEPT _______.
A. Children must get a medal if they attend a competition
B. Children should practice piano even on holidays.
C. Children are indulged to sleepover, play dates, etc.
D. Children are called “garbage” or “fatty”
3.What’s the writer’s purpose of using the example of “weight problem”?
A. To show Chinese parents can do unimaginable things.
B. To make a comparison between Western and Chinese mothers.
C. To make us believe the western way of parenting is much better.
D. To show that Chinese mothers care more about their children.
4.From the passage we can learn that Chua’s way of parenting is _______.
A. widely acceptable B. very traditional
C. quite controversial D. out of date
5.Which is the main idea of the passage?
A. The Chinese way of parenting has its advantages.
B. Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is a best seller.
C. The westerners are not good at raising children.
D. Tiger mothers raise their children in the Chinese way.
