In 1817 one of the most well-known hauntings in American history took place in the small town of Adams, Tennessee. Known as the Bell Witch, the strange activity that caused fear in the small farming community has remained unexplained for nearly 200 years. Like many stories, certain details of who or what the Bell Witch was vary from version to version. The prevailing account is that it was the ghost of a woman named Kate Batts, a mean old neighbour of John Bell. Batts believed Bell cheated her in a land purchase and on her deathbed she swore that she would haunt John Bell and his family.
News of the Bell Witch spread quickly. When word of the haunting reached Nashville, one of its most citizens, General Andrew Jackson, decided to gather a group of friends and go to Adams to investigate. The future president wanted to come face to face with the phenomenon and either expose it as a trick or send the spirit away. According to one account, Jackson and his men were traveling over a smooth section of road when suddenly the wagon stopped. The men pushed and pushed, but the wagon could not be moved. The wheels were even removed and inspected. The came the sound of a voice from the bushes saying, “I will see you tonight.” The astonished men could not find the source of the voice. The horses then unexpectedly started walking on their own and the wagon moved along again. Jackson indeed encountered the witch that night and left early the next morning, claiming he would rather fight the British than the Bell Witch!
The haunting of the Bell house continued for several years, ending with ghost’s final act of revenge. On the morning of December 19, he failed to awake at his regular time. When the family noticed he was sleeping unnaturally, they attempted to rouse him. They discovered Bell couldn’t be completely awakened. John’s son went to the medicine cupboard to get his father’s medicine and noticed it was gone but a strange small bottle was in its place. No one claimed to have replaced the medicine with the bottle. John Bell died on December 20 and “Kate” was quiet until after the funeral.
A few explanations of the Bell Witch phenomena have been offered over the years. One is that the haunting was a trick created by Richard Powell, the schoolteacher of Betsy Bell and Joshua Gardner, the boy with whom Betsy was in love. It seemed Powell was deeply in love with Betsy and would do anything to destroy her relationship with Gardner. Through a variety of tricks, and with the help of several friends, it is believed that Powell created all of the ghostly effects to scare Gardner away. In fact, Gardner eventually did break up with Betsy and left area and Powell did come out winner. In the end, he married Betsy Bell.

If you ever felt like your doctor was trying to push you out of the examination room before you had a chance to explain your condition you are not alone.
A new study from the Mayo Clinic shows that most people agree on what makes a good doctor and it definitely isn’t one who hurries through a visit.
A doctor’s skills can affect a patient’s emotional response and recovery very positively or very negatively, a research shows. Based on the new study, which surveyed 192 patients, it can be concluded that a model doctor should be confident, sympathetic, kind, personal forthright, respectful and thorough.
“What every patient wants is a doctor who pays them personal attention” said James Li, a doctor at the Mayo Clinic Division of Allergic Diseases Li is helping to develop programs for teaching doctors how to strengthen their interactions with patients.
“It’s really the duty of the medical community to design a health care system, so that doctors are able to exhibit those qualities for the good of the patients,” he said.
Many patients nowadays are directed to urgent care facilities or , for lack of good insurance, forced to go to emergency rooms for problems that used to be handled right away. In either case, wait time can be hours and actual face time with a doctor might be just seconds.
“The days when doctors remembered their patients’ names might no longer exit , but medical schools can fill in this crack by adding in the seven behavioral things into their training.” Li said.
“If patients have opportunities to tell their stories, to be asked questions and have the doctors describe understanding of what has been shared , it leaves them feeling like they’re heard ” Lisaid.

Phys ed (physical education) is making a comeback as a part of the school core curriculum(核心课程), but with a difference. While group sports are still part of the curriculum, the new way is to teach skills that are useful beyond gym class. Instead of learning how to climb a rope, children are taught to lift weights, balance their diets and build physical endurance. In this way, kids are given the tools and skills and experiences so they can lead a physically active life the rest of their life.
Considering that 15 percent of American children 6 to 18 are overweight, supporters say more money and thought must be put into phys ed curriculum. In many cases, that may mean not just replacing the old gym-class model with fitness programs but also starting up phys ed programs because school boards often "put P.E. on the chopping block, cutting it entirely or decreasing its teachers or the days it is offered," says Alicia Moag-Stahlberg, the executive director of Action for Health Kids. The difference in phys ed programs is partly due to the lack of a national standard. "Physical education needs to be part of the core curriculum," she added.
The wisdom of the new approach has some scientific support. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin have demonstrated how effective the fit-for-life model of gym class can be. They observed how 50 overweight children lost more weight when they cycled and skied cross-country than when they played sports. The researchers also found that teaching sports like football resulted in less overall movement, partly because reluctant students were able to sit on the bench.
Another problem with simply teaching group sports in gym class is that only a tiny percentage of students continue playing them after graduating from high school. The new method teaches sells that translate to adulthood.

Imagine a world in which there was suddenly no emotion—a world in which human beings could feel no love or happiness, no terror or hate. Try to imagine the consequences of such a transformation. People might not be able to stay alive: knowing neither joy nor pleasure, neither anxiety nor fear, they would be as likely to repeat acts that hurt them as acts that were beneficial. They could not learn: they could not benefit from experience because this emotionless world would lack rewards and punishments. Society would soon disappear: people would be as likely to harm one another as to provide help and support. Human relationships would not exist: in a world without friends or enemies, there could be no marriage, affection among companions, or bonds among members of groups. Society’s economic functions would be destroyed: since earning $10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10, there would be no motivation to work. In fact, there would be no motivation of any kind. For as we will see, motivation implies a capacity to enjoy certain activties.
In such a world, the chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions are the basic instrument of our survival and adaptation. Emotions structure the world for us in important ways. As individuals, we categorize objects on the basis of our emotions. True we consider the length, shape, size, or texture, but an object’s physical aspects are less important than what it has done or can do to us—hurt us, surprise us, anger us or make us joyful. We also use categorizations colored by emotions in our families, communities, and overall society. Out of our emotional experiences with objects and events comes a social feeling of agreement that certain things and actions are “good” and others are “bad”, and we apply these categories to every aspect of our social life—from what foods we eat and what clothes we wear to how we keep promises and which people our group will accept. In fact, society exploits our emotional reactions and attitudes, such as loyalty, morality, pride, shame, guilt, fear and greed, in order to maintain itself. It gives high rewards to individuals when performing important tasks.

In today’s world, the most successful companies are the ones who understand how important it is to make contacts around the world. However, doing business in different countries is very rarely simple. It is important to be aware of the local customs and traditions of the people you are dealing with, which is the best way to impress your hosts.
One example that comes to mind is of a German company that recently tried to gain a new contract in South Korea. The German visitors arrived at the Korean company’s office early in the morning and spent the whole day in long meetings. By the evening, the Germans were so tired that they politely declined the Korean’s invitation to go out for dinner and drinks, since they wanted to return to their hotel and get some rest. The Germans did not understand that in South Korea business talks often continue into the evening. The Germans only came to realize that they offended their hosts after they had lost the contract.
In Europe or the USA, business is rarely discussed into the evening. However, it is important to be on time for a meeting. If you are late, your hosts may think you do not care. In fact, it is better to arrive at least ten minutes before the meeting starts. This way, you can show how keen you are to do business with them, and you will also have time to talk with your hosts before you sit down to discuss business.
However, in many countries meetings may not start on time. There are a number of reasons for this, such as transport difficulties due to poor roads, unusual weather and the cost of cars. Sometimes the time of day is also important. In South America and many countries in southern Europe, people have a short sleep for a couple of hours after lunch. Therefore, if you try to arrange a meeting for the early afternoon, you may find that not many people will attend, or that you hosts will be in a bad mood.

Scientists have determined it's not advisable to hurry marriage. But what’s the best age to wed?
When Avril Lavigne announced she was splitting from her husband, comments from her friends suggested that she was only 21 when she tied the knot and later she said that she realized she'd been too young to make such a life-altering decision. Could fellow young celebrity divorcées(离婚者) Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, and Britney Spears have also hit the same age-related issue?
The Magic Number
There are practical reasons for the mid-20s dividing line, and most of them boil down to two biggies: education and money.
It turns out that the more years of higher education a woman has under her belt on her wedding day, the lower the chances that she'll get divorced ... and by 25, you're more likely to have earned a degree or two. Educated women tend to be more confident about who they are and less willing to settle for a man who doesn't meet their standards.
Odds(可能性) are that by 25 you're also supporting yourself, so there's less incentive(刺激; 鼓励)for you to rush into marriage because you're seeking financial security from him. But the marriage-related benefits of working and having money of your own go beyond feeling secure. Learning to budget your cash carefully when you're single will help you avoid financial problems—one of the main causes of couple fights—for the rest of your life.
Knowing the Real You
At 25, you've had time for some crucial life experiences, including a relationship or two that may have improved your Mr. Right radar. You've probably dated enough to have a better idea of what you don't want in a man, which makes it easier to know what you can live with and can't live without.
Perhaps the most important aspect of waiting is that you'll know what your goals and values really are. While you don't want to marry someone just like you, marriage is a lot easier if you two share a similar outlook on life.
Twenty-four and already married to the man of your dreams? Don't worry: Many young marriages survive. But given the choice, you might consider putting off the big day until your mid-20s or later.

The unsteady housing market is showing a rare sign of strength: waiting home sales were up significantly in February, a report released Monday said, suggesting that Americans took advantage of a tax credit for home buyers.
Sales rose 8.2 percent in February, the National Association of Realtors(房地产经纪人) said. Analysts had expected sales to stay flat.
Economists said Monday’s data suggested buyers were re-entering the market as the April 30 deadline approached for a government tax credit of up to $8,000. The tax credit drove up sales rapidly in the fall, when it was originally set to end, but it has been slow to push the market this spring.
Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the association, said Monday’s report “may signal the early stages of a second wave of home sales.”
A separate report on Monday showed the service division in the United States was improving, driven in part by gains in employment.
The Institute for Supply Management’s non-manufacturing barometer(晴雨表) rose to 55.4 in March, up from 53 in February, going beyond expectations. Much of the energy came from a rush in new orders and business activity.
It was the highest reading(测量或调查的读数) for the survey since May 2006. While employment rose, it was short of the break-even point, signaling the service division was still losing jobs. Exports also rose significantly.
“This is a very encouraging report, which indicates acceleration in demand growth from both domestic and foreign customers,” Barclays Capital researchers wrote in a note on Monday.
The jump in waiting home sales was a rare bit of good news for the housing market, which remains in a deep rut(车辙). Home prices have shown little change.
Analysts expect the housing market to gradually improve as unemployment becomes less and the broader recovery gains steam. But so far, relief has been slow to come.
Monday’s report showed sales rose even in areas hit hard by poor weather in February. Sales climbed 9 percent in the Northeast and South, which were blanketed by snow in February.
The Realtors association bases its data on signed contracts, which usually take one or two months to translate into final sales.

From bankers to factory staff, employees in the west face the bleak prospect of losing their jobs as a global recession starts to bite. For colleagues in the East the pain is more likely to come through a pay cut.
Human resource experts say cultural differences explain why Asian firms try harder to keep jobs in difficult times, which will stop unemployment and may help keep Asian economies afloat at a time of slowing exports.
The East Asian attitude may also make it easier for firms to recover quickly from the economic downturn since they will not need to rehire or train new staff, leaving some experts predicting Western shift to Eastern flexibility.
“In the Confucian attitude, the right thing to do is to share the burden. There is the sense of collective responsibility whereas in the west, it’s more about the individual survival,” said Michael Benotlel, associate professor of organizational behavior at Singapore Management University.
Steven Pang, Asian Regional director for Aquent, a headhunting firm, said in many East Asian companies there was an responsibility “ to take care of the members of the family and go through the pain together” even if that meant causing losses.
Us firms from General Motors to Goldman Sachs plan to lay off workers by the thousands. But at the Asian units of Western multinationals, jobs cuts will probably less severe.
Japan’s jobless rate was 4 percent in September, up from 3.8 percent in January, while Hong Kong’s was flat at 3.4 percent. But US unemployment is expected to have jumped to 6.3 percent last month from below 5 percent in January.
Experts say that while there are noticeable differences in labor practices in East and West, the gap will narrow as more firms become more multinational and competition forces firms to adopt the best practices of rivals from abroad.

People working in places where large quantities of chemicals are involved, are more likely to suffer from chemical burns. Other incidents may occur at home through accidental misuse of products such as those used for hair, nails, skin, etc. A chemical skin burn is usually caused by acids like battery acid, toilet bowel cleaner, etc. Alkalis(碱) like paint removers are also responsible for chemical burns, and oxidants(氧化剂) also cause chemical burns when they come into contact with skin.
A chemical burn isn’t like an ordinary burn. No matter how harmless the burn is, it should be brought to a doctor’s attention. A chemical burn treatment has to be quick and isn’t something to be ignored as the burn may make the injury worse and cause undue damage to the skin.
The first step to treat chemical burns is to remove the victim from the accident area and also get rid of any clothes that may come into contact with the chemical causing the burn. Take care not to come into contact with the chemical.
Using large volumes of cool running water, wash the skin to get rid of the substance from the injured area. It is best to keep the injured area under cool, running water for about 20 minutes or more.
Do not use ice-cold water as it may further damage the skin. Alternatively, it is best to apply the cold compress(敷布) wrapped in a soft cloth soaked in cold water. Using this method every one hour for the whole day proves beneficial for the chemical burn treatment.
If you notice any sign of blisters(水泡) that has covered more than 3 inches in diameter of the skin, then it is time to call for immediate medical help. Any occurrence of unusual signs also requires medical help.
In extreme cases, the blood pressure and the heart rate of the victim may be affected to a critical extent. So intravenous fluid is administered to normalize the disturbed functions of the body. Intravenous process may also be required to administer certain medicines so as to prevent any infection or to reduce pain.
During the recuperation(康复) from the chemical burn, drinking plenty of water and fluids will help keep the body well hydrated. This helps a speedy recovery.

Cameras will record city’s illegal parkers
CCTV cameras are to be used in the heart of London for the first time to catch motorists causing traffic jam by parking on double yellow lines and vans unloading illegally.
About 20 cameras have been set up in the West End to detect and fine vehicle owners who park illegally, in an effort to keep traffic flowing and reduce traffic jam.
The scheme, which could eventually be extended nationwide, will also be used to spot and prosecute(起诉) people who attack parking attendants.
Although the cameras are primarily for parking offences, the police will be allowed to access to film footage(录象资料).
The introduction of the CCTV cameras by Westminster City Council follows an eight-week trial that resulted in a marked improvement in traffic flow. The trial showed that the number of offences committed trailed off(减弱,) over the time of the study and fewer penalty(处罚) notices were challenged.
Over the next three weeks Westminster is running an awareness campaign to inform drivers about its new parking enforcement. During this time motorists who disobey the regulations will be issued with a warning. After that, parking tickets will be issued.
The main focus of the new scheme is on double yellow lines and loading bays in areas such as Piccadilly, the Strand, Oxford Circus and Soho.
Dan Chalkley, Westminster council’s cabinet member for economic development and transport, said, “Our pilot scheme proved that CCTV is reliable and cost-effective.”
Paul Watters, the AA’s head of roads and transport policy, said, “A camera won’t spot the blue badge or note on the windscreen about the car being broken down.”
