From a young age, I would climb up and down for fun. My first introduction to gymnastics was through my older sister Arielle, who used to be a gymnast. She taught me how to do my first cartwheel(侧手翻). By the end of the week, I was teaching myself one-armed cartwheels and my sister said to my mom, “You need to put this kid in gymnastics.”
At about age 9, I realized that I wanted to pursue the Olympic path. I was used to the public eye, but the Olympic stage was different. The Games teach you to act in a certain way and to be disciplined(守纪律的). They teach you to be a mature young lady, and you grow up fast.
When I started this journey, I never knew what it actually took to get to the Olympics. I thought it was: Training. I had to give up a normal kind of life for gymnastics, but I didn’t mind. I moved from Virginia Beach to Iowa to get a different coach. I sacrificed my privacy. Gymnastics was what I was going to eat, breathe and sleep. It takes a lot to be an Olympic athlete. You may have a talent, but the people who work harder than you will surpass(超过) you.
Throughout my career, a lot of people have doubted me. When someone tells you that you can’t do it, especially when there are many people, you start to believe it. It took me years to figure out how great I was at gymnastics. Fear held me back when I hurt my leg in 2011, but I told myself that I had a talent and that I was going to use it. I went to the world championships and got a team gold.
I won three gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games and helped Team USA win gold at the 2011 and 2015 world championships. My mom used to say, “Inspire a generation.” It’s one thing when you say it, but I never thought that I would be a pioneer and that people would draw inspiration from my story.
1.Why did the author’s sister suggest putting her in gymnastics?
A. She was talented in gymnastics.
B. She needed to decide her future career.
C. She was too noisy to stay at home.
D. She had fallen in love with gymnastics.
2.We can learn from Paragraph 3 that the author ________.
A. left school at an early age
B. devoted great efforts to training
C. thought talent was necessary
D. dreamed of being famous one day
3.What did the author learn from others’ doubt?
A. Failures were unavoidable.
B. She had to improve her skills.
C. She should be confident in herself.
D. What others thought was not important.
4.What does the author mainly talk about in this passage?
A. Her childhood experience.
B. Her road to success.
C. Her passion for the Olympics.
D. Her performance in gymnastics.

For the past 100 years, people believed middle age to be around 50 years old. This is a time when we start to grow old. However, new research says we have to change this. A study from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIAS) in Austria and Stony Brook University in New York says middle age now starts at 60 or even 65, or older. Why?
The biggest reason is that we are living longer. We are also healthier, we have better diets, we exercise more and we have more money to live in a nicer lifestyle. The IIAS said, "Since life expectancy has increased over the past several decades, and are continuing to increase, people once considered old should actually be viewed as more middle aged."
The study was not a worldwide one so perhaps not everyone in all countries can say they are middle aged when they are 65. The researchers looked at populations in 39 European countries, so this is good news for Europeans. Britain’s National Health Service warned against looking at this study and believing it to be 100 percent true. It said the researchers did not look at things which could reduce life expectancy: "We don’t know whether, for example, they factored (把……因素包括进去) in the possible impact of being unable to treat infections because of rising antibiotic (抗生素) resistance, or the increased numbers of people with diabetes (糖尿病) due to obesity." It recommended healthy living, eating and exercise as a way to live longer.
1.What do people believe for the past century?
A.People start to grow old when they are about 50.
B.Middle age is far beyond 50 years old.
C.People will die at around 50 years old.
D.Middle age is a time when people become ill.
2.What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.The main reason why we are living longer.
B.The reason why middle age now starts at 60 or even 65.
C.Life expectancy has increased.
D.Middle aged people were once considered old.
3.What do Britain’s National Health Service’s words mean?
A.It believes the study to be true.
B.To live longer, one should live a healthy life.
C.There are more people who suffer from diabetes due to obesity.
D.The researchers didn’t factor in the possible impact.
4.What is the writer’s attitude towards the study?
A.Indifferent. B.Supportive.
C.Negative. D.Objective.

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind. People always seemed to feel comfortable in her presence. For years, she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home with her where she taught a ceramics(制陶技术) class.
On one summer day, Mama told me to get changed and meet her at the car.
I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? I imagined the cool lake water. Irritated,I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. We sat in silence. I was too upset to make conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mama asked calmly.
“No,” I said.
“We are going to volunteer at a children’s shelter today. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
When we reached the shelter, Mama rang the doorbell. Moments later, we were greeted by a woman. She led us to the front room where all of the children were playing. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with iron marks. I was told it was because she wouldn’t stop crying. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars. Others hid their emotional wounds.
As I took in my surroundings, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl looking up at me. “Hi. You want to play dolls with me?” she asked. I looked over at Mama for reinforcement. She smiled and nodded. I turned back and said, “Sure.” Her tiny hand reached up and held mine, as if to comfort me.
My mom taught me a valuable lesson that summer. I returned to the shelter with her several times. During those visits, some of the children shared their troubled pasts with me and I learned to be grateful for what I had. Today as I try to instill (逐渐灌输) these values in my own child, I reflect back to that experience. It was a time that I will never forget.

Chance at new start
Mike Miles hadn't had a stable job in years. He bounced around from agency to agency, never sure when his last day would be. Sometimes, he lost a job with less than a day's notice. This was not due to a poor work ethic (职业道德)﹣from arriving early to staying late, Miles says he did everything he could to leave good impressions on employers in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the US. But because Miles had a criminal record, he was always cut loose when it came time to let staff go.
"It was like walking on eggshells. You just never knew when you'd be gone," he said.
After his release from prison in 2007, Miles struggled to find stability (稳定)﹣both mentally and financially. During this time, he lived in his mother's house and she helped him raise his daughter. When his mom passed away two years later, Miles says he became more determined than ever to create a healthy environment for his family.
"I'm all she has, and she's all I have," he said. "I had to build a whole new relationship with my daughter, while building a whole new life for myself."
It wasn't until October 2015, nearly a decade after he got out of prison, that a cousin told Miles about a food company that hires people who have difficulty finding jobs.
Hoping this would clear up what felt like a thick cloud of uncertainty over his future, Miles submitted an application. He got an interview and soon after that, began his new job. His work involves everything from food production to maintenance (保存), not to mention it pays a livable wage of $15 an hour. He says it's the best job he's ever had.
Miles' story is rare in Lancaster, where the poverty rate is around 30 percent﹣about double the national average. This figure annoyed Charlie Crystle, the co﹣founder and CEO of the company that gave Miles his job.
Crystle says he wants to inspire other companies and entrepreneurs (企业家) to rethink their current practices and ignite (引发) conversations about minimum wage and employment opportunities for everyone, including ex﹣offenders (前罪犯).
Beyond providing employment and livable wages, the company also helps employees deal with the many challenges of reentry into society. This means anything from helping them find housing and health benefits to changing their schedules so they can make court dates.
