When I was in middle school, I was one of the smaller players on the basketball team. In our first game of the season, we were 31 to face a good team, all of whom were tall guys. Naturally, at my 32, it would have been easy to be 33 by our competitors.
On game day, my basketball coach called me over to him. He was a strong and tough coach, and in his 34 rough manner said, “Joel, you’re not that 35, but let me tell you that size doesn’t matter. Don’t be afraid. What 36 is right down in here.” He pointed his finger at his 37as he continued, “Joel, you’ve got a big heart, and you’re to 38 it this year.”
When I heard the coach’s 39, I stood taller than usual! I thought to myself: The coach believes in me! My confidence 40 and I played better that year than I’d ever done before.
It’s 41 what we can achieve when we know somebody really believes in us. That coach took a little time to make a big 42 . He took time to make me confident in myself. If we’re going to 43 the best in people, we need to sow seeds of 44 .
As the saying goes, “Love looks for a way of being constructive.” 45 , love looks for ways to help improve somebody else’s life.
When people are 46 us, they should leave better off than they were before. People should feel 47 and inspired after spending any time with you and me 48 feeling discouraged or defeated.
Remember, there’s 49 greater investment(投资)in life than in being a people builder. Relationships 50 much more to us than our achievements.

Some of my fondest memories with my family are from when I was in middle school, when the three of us enjoyed trips that I remember vividly to this day. But during my younger days, like 4 or 5 years old, we vacationed in places like Cancun, Jamaica and Hawaii and I can't tell whether I actually recall those memories or whether I'm filling in the gaps through photo albums.
A frequent discussion I have with my coworkers and friends,' who are also in their 20s, is how we wish our parents had taken us on more vacations when we were much older. What I suggest is to hold off on those grand vacations until your kid is about 12, when they can begin to understand what a privilege is, and you can save the international travel until they're in high school. Of course, I do understand that sometimes, it's not the kids but the parents who just want to enjoy a vacation. But in other cases, when the main goal is to create family memories, you can still accomplish that in other ways.
It wasn't until college that I realized how important travel is, and I can't tell you how many times I've thought about wanting to redo those family trips now. Especially during a time in my life when an international trip is outside of my budget, I think about how much money my parents spent on our vacations that ended up being a complete blur.
I'm not telling you to deprive (剥夺) your children of fun family memories, either. I'm simply arguing that you should travel locally or within your state. Although your little ones might not care about the destination, they will remember that you are all together and have a great time. That's the most important thing, anyway.

3.What does the underlined word “blur” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Jokes that are made between families.
B.Efforts that are made to achieve a goal.

A.Create Chances of Vacations with Children

Students who date (约会) in middle school have significantly worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.
“Romantic relationships are a symbol of adolescence(青春期), but very few studies have examined how adolescents are different in the development of these relationships.” said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health.
Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grade. Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires (调查表) about the students' academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.
“At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,” according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.
“Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker,” Orpinas said, “When the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and divert (转移) attention from studying.”
“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school.”Orpinas concluded.
1.According to the passage, students who date in middle school may_____.
A.have poorer academic performances
B.be more likely to hurt others
C.enjoy better school lives
D.are less likely to use alcohol and tobacco
2.When doing his study, Orpinas _____.
A.followed a group of students of 6th and 12th grade
B.found that the students' study skills have connection with their frequency of dating
C.completed questionnaires about the students' academic efforts
D.completed a survey and a report each year
3.What can possibly happen to the school couples after they break up?
A.They will miss their ex-partners sometimes.
B.They don't want to see each other any longer.
C.Their attention to studying will be affected.
D.They will think it's reasonable to get depressed.
4.Orpinas’ attitude towards dating in middle school is _____.
A.supportive B.negative
C.indifferent D.positive

When I was young, my mother didn't have the money to send me to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.
We need every one of you to develop your talents and your skills so that you can help us old folks solve our most difficult problems. If you quit(离开,放弃) on school-you' re not just quitting on yourself , you 're quitting on your country. No one's written your destiny(命运) for you ,because you write your own destiny. You make your own future. That's why today I 'm calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education and do everything you can to meet them. Your goal can be something as simple as doing all your homework, paying attention in class, or spending some time reading a book.
But whatever you decide to do , I want you to commit to(使致力于) it. I want you to really work at it. I know that sometimes you get that sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work-that your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star. No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work. You're not a good athlete the first time you play a new sport.
