An emperor was almost eighty years old and knew it was time to choose his successor(接班人). Instead of choosing one of his children, he decided on something different. He called all of the young people in the kingdom together one day. He said, “It is time for me to choose the next emperor. I have decided to choose one of you.”
The kids were shocked! But the emperor continued, “I am going to give each one of you a seed today. One special seed. I want you to plant it and come back one year later with what you have grown from this seed. I will then judge the plants, and the one I choose will be the next emperor!”
One boy named Ling received a seed like the others. He went home and planted the seed in a pot, watering it carefully. Every day he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their plants that were beginning to grow. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew.
A year finally went by and all the youths brought their plants to the emperor. Ling thought he should be honest about what had happened. So he took his empty pot to the palace. When Ling arrived, he was amazed at the plants grown by other youths. They were beautiful, in all shapes and sizes.
When the emperor arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted the young people. Ling just tried to hide in the back. Suddenly, the emperor spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered his guards to bring him to the front. Ling was terrified. When Ling got to the front, the Emperor asked his name. “My name is Ling,” he replied. All the kids were laughing and making fun of him. The emperor asked everyone to quiet down. He looked at Ling, and then announced to the crowd, “Behold your new emperor! I am a psychologist. I first met Timothy, a quiet, overweight eleven-year-old boy, when his mother brought him to me to discuss his declining grades. A few minutes with Timothy were enough to confirm that his self-esteem(自尊) and general happiness were falling right along with them. I asked about Timothy’s typical day. He awoke every morning at six thirty so he could reach his school by eight and arrived home around four thirty each afternoon. He then had a quick snack, followed by either a piano lesson or a lesson with his math tutor. He finished dinner at 7 pm, and then he sat down to do homework for two to three hours. Quickly doing the math in my head, I found that Timothy spent an average of thirteen hours a day at a writing desk.
What if Timothy spent thirteen hours a day at a sewing machine instead of a desk? We would immediately be shocked, because that would be called children being horribly mistreated. Timothy was far from being mistreated, but the mountain of homework he faced daily resulted in a similar consequence —he was being robbed of his childhood. In fact, Timothy had no time to do anything he truly enjoyed, such as playing video games, watching movies, or playing board games with his friends.
Play, however, is a crucial part of healthy child development. It affects children’s creativity, their social skills, and even their brain development. The absence of play, physical exercise, and freefrom social interaction takes a serious toll on many children. It can also cause significant health problems like childhood obesity, sleep problems and depression.
Experts in the field recommend the minutes children spend on their homework should be no more than ten times the number of their grade level. As a fifthgrader, Timothy should have no more than fifty minutes a day of homework (instead of three times that amount). Having an extra two hours an evening to play, relax, or see a friend would soundly benefit any child’s life quality.
1.What does the underlined word “them” in the first paragraph probably refer to?
A. Timothy’s parents. B. Timothy’s grades.
C. Psychologists. D. The students.
2.What did the writer think of Timothy after learning about his typical day?
A. Timothy was very hardworking.
B. Timothy was being mistreated.
C. Timothy had a heavy burden.
D. Timothy was enjoying his childhood.
3.Which of the following statements best describes the writer’s opinion?
A. Children should be allowed enough time to play.
B. Playing board games works better than playing video games.
C. The more they play, the more creative children will become.
D. The depression caused by homework makes children unwilling to play.
4.According to the passage, how long should a thirdgrader spend a day doing homework?
A. About ten minutes.
B. No more than twenty minutes.
C. No more than thirty minutes.
D. About fifty minutes.

When the Farnsworth family moved to their new farm in 1919, eleven-year-old Philo was surprised to find it wired for electricity. This unusual circumstance contributed to his fate — to become an important inventor of the twentieth century.
By thirteen, Farnsworth had become a self-taught electrical engineer. He was able to fix the farm’s generator(发电机)when none of the adults could. In 1922, he read an article about a new idea of John Baird, a Scottish scientist, who had been working with the cathode ray tube (阴极射线管) for the transmission of electronic pictures and wanted to attempt it himself.
Farnsworth studied everything he could find on the subject. Although many older engineers with money backers were already developing television, Farnsworth made a bold decision — he was going to perfect a working model of it before anybody else.
In college, Farnsworth continued his research with cathode ray and vacuum tubes, but the death of his father, the only money maker in the family, forced him to give up this research and find a job. His first job was for George Everson, with whom Farnsworth discussed his dream of television. While acknowledging the achievements of those who came before, Farnsworth thought that he could get closer. Everson agreed to risk $6,000 for the research.
Backers came in 1927 to see the first American television, one year after Baird’s. They were astonished to see the image of a single white line resolve itself on the screen before them, and agreed that this new invention was worth putting money into.
In 1930, Farnsworth won a patent (专利权) for his all-electronic TV. By the time he died, he had earned over 300 American and foreign patents for electronic and mechanical devices.
1.When Farnsworth was at a young age, he _______
A. had to drop out of school to help on the family farm
B. was sent to school to study electrical engineering
C. wanted to be the first person to invent the television
D. had shown a surprising ability in the electrical field
2.What difficulty did Farnsworth meet when he first began his research on the television?
A. His parents didn’t support his work.
B. He didn’t have enough knowledge in this field.
C. He didn’t have enough money for his research.
D. No one was interested in this research.
3.How old was Philo Farnsworth when he invented the first American television?
A. 11. B. 13. C. 19. D. 22.
4.From the passage, we can learn that Farnsworth is ______.
A. the first person who worked for the transmission of electronic pictures
B. an inventor who improved on somebody else’s idea
C. an inventor who always came up with an original idea
D. a person who earned over 300 American patents for electronic devices
