There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect”— conserving heat reflected from the earth and raising the world’s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world’s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth’s temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible). Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world’s temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people neglect the damage on our environment caused by the “advanced civilization”. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development. But is it really worthwhile?
46. As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution _______.
A. cause widespread damage in the countryside
B. affected the entire eastern half of the United States
C. had damaged effect on health
D. existed merely in urban and industries areas
47. As to the greenhouse effect, the author __________.
A. share the same view with the scientist.
B. is uncertain of its occurrence
C. rejects it as being ungrounded
D. thinks that it will destroy the world soon
48. The word “offset” in the second paragraph could be replaced by _________.
A. slip into B. make up for C. set up D. catch up with
49. It can be concluded that ____________.
A. raising the world’s temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth
B. lowering the world’s temperature merely a few degrees would lead major farming areas to disaster
C. almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade
D. the world’s temperature will remain constant in the years to come
50. This passage is primarily about __________.
A. the greenhouse effect B. the burning of fossil fuels
C. the potential effect of air pollution D. the likelihood of a new ice age

It was once thought that air pollution only affected the area immediately around large cities with factories or heavy automobile traffic. Today we know that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is actually worldwide. On several occasions over the past ten years, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the entire eastern half of the United States and led to health warning even in rural areas away from any major concentration of big factories or automobile. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be affected by air pollution. Some scientist feel that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of coal and oil is creating a "green house" effect--holding in heat reflected from the earth and raising the world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice will disappear and cities, such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be under water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particulate matter (颗粒物质) in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature--a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to new ice age and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report prepared by experts in this field concluded that the green house effect is very likely). Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two trends will offset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now.
1.As far as the green house effect is concerned, the author________.
A. shares the same view with the scientist
B. is not sure that it will happen
C. thinks it impossible because there is no strong evidence
D. thinks it will destroy the world soon
2.According to what we read in the passage, ________.
A. raising the world's temperature only a few degrees would do no harm to life on the earth
B. lowering the world's temperatures only a few degrees would lead many major farming areas to disaster
C. the temperature in the countryside will remain permanent in the years to come
D. the particulate matter in the atmosphere has lowered the world's average temperature
3.The word "offset" in the last sentence means________.
A. strengthen B. worsen C. balance D. support
4.This passage is mainly about________.
A. the pollution caused by human beings B. the green house effect
C. the potential effect of air pollution D. the possibility of a new ice age

Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, it also increases pollution and wastes energy and water. Only 23% of all plastic in America ends up in a recycling bin, meaning over $ 1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.
It is a convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunken or eaten. To drink it, you can either peel off the membrane(薄膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. One problem the scientists have run into is how to ship large amounts of Ooho bubbles(水泡) without arriving with a very wet truck. However, they have attempted to package units of individual bubbles together inside a larger and thicker membrane. It is targeting large outdoor events, such as marathons, music festivals, and sporting events, where tons of plastic bottles are used, and frequently left behind as litter. And too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for their purpose of such a new invention.
The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials needed to produce Ooho; they have recently applied a patent for their new advancements. The price for an individual bubble or a unit of bubbles has not been set yet, but they cost about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. It has appeared at events in London, San Francisco, Boston, at conferences, festivals, and so on.
Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $ 1 million and gained 1,000 investors in only three days. It is mostly being sold at events at the moment to keep the consumer’s interest while the production machine is getting up and running. It is quickly making a rise,so keep an eye out this year for these bottles of the future.
1.How is most plastic dealt with in America?
A. It’s sold. B. It’s recycled.
C. It’s buried. D. It’s wasted.
2.Why did the team invent Ooho?
A. To make a profit for a company. B. To protect the environtnent.
C. To make people eat as they drink. D. To reduce the cost of plastic bottle.
3.What can we infer about Ooho from the text?
A. It is easy and safe to ship it in large amounts.
B. It has become popular since it began to be sold.
C. It might be sold at a lower price than plastic bottles.
D. It cost the team a lot of money to develop the technology.
4.What does the author really want to say in the last paragraph?
A. Ooho is to be a success in the future.
B. Ooho is being supported by smart people.
C. Ooho is taking the place of plastic bottles now.
D. Ooho is being produced to attract more investors.

高三英语单项填空简单题查看答案及解析
The heat was intense as we moved down the long corridor. Not only was it a difficult blaze, but the July heat made things even worse as we struggled to get the best of the flames. As we finally made the turn into the apartment where the fire had started, the words of the young mother outside screamed in my brain, ‘Please help! My baby is in there!’
We moved into the bedroom and I started looking in the usual spots where a child might seek refuge: under the bed, in the corners. As I groped my way through the thick smoke, I suddenly fell forward, tripping over something on the floor. It was the child. Ripping off my mask to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, I grabbed the child and raced for the stairs. When we reached the waiting Rescue Squad members, I collapsed in a heap in the gutter. The ambulance sped off into the night, its siren wailing. Later that evening, we received word that the child had died in the hospital’s emergency room. Another small life lost in the city.
Why do little children such as that one have to pay the price for the neglect of others? During my career as a fire fighter, I have seen this happen many times. You would think that we would become hard and callous, but we don’t. We mourn each person who dies. What bothers me is that many senseless tragedies could have been prevented. An overwhelming number of deaths in fires can be prevented by just one thing – a smoke detector. It is estimated that fewer than 50 percent of all dwellings in the United States are protected by smoke detectors. Why are so many people ignorant about the need for smoke detectors? Smoke detectors save lives. They are easy to install. Their cost is reasonable, and they offer immediate protection.
People must persuade their communities to provide fire education for everyone. The money spent on fire education reaps a reward that cannot be measured. If you do not think so, then consider your reactions if the child I carried out of that flaming apartment had been a member of your own family. You would probably then be willing to do anything at all to undo that tragedy.
1.The author’s main purpose in the passage is to __________.
A. advertise a new brand of smoke detector.
B. persuade readers to become fire fighters.
C. plead for donations from the public.
D. encourage fire safety measures.
2.In the Section About carrying the child from the building, the author is describing
_________.
A. a scene the author saw in a movie
B. a tragedy in a fire fighter’s family
C. a personal experience
D. a training course in fire education
3.According to this reading, which of the following opinions will the author most
agree with?
A. People have received enough fire education provided by their communities.
B. Many deaths in Fires could have been prevented.
C. The fires in apartments are always caused by smoking.
D. Fire Fighters don’t have sympathy for those who die in fires.
4.The author blames the lack of smoke detectors in households on the reason that________.
A. smoke detectors are too expensive
B. smoke detectors often cannot work properly
C. smoke detectors are difficult to install
D. people are ignorant about the need for smoke detectors.
