Swim-with-dolphins
Humans have always been fascinated by dolphins and there has been a long history of association between the two. 1.. The “swim-with-dolphins” tourist industry is becoming more popular every year. The chance to see dolphins in the wild is often a lifetime dream for many people and tour operators are always on the lookout to give their tourist swimmers the best experience they can. After all, it can cost a large amount of money to have this kind of holiday experience. 2.
Research has shown that while dolphins can move away if they do not want to interact with human swimmers , they do not like it at all if the swimmers slip into the water directly on top of them or if humans are in their path of travel. However, if swimmers enter the water to one side of them, the dolphins do not avoid the swimmers to the same extent. 3.
In all cases, the dolphins seem to have become more sensitive to the presence of the swimmers. For dolphins, swimming with humans is not necessarily a high priority(优先权). 4. It is a new and unusual experience for them .
5. The advice is that dolphins should be given adequate periods of time throughout the day when they are not exposed to tourism. Humans’ lifelong dreams of swimming with dolphins in the wild have severely affected them, leaving not enough time for them to rest and take care of their own babies.
If we are to enjoy these remarkable animals and not just use them for our entertainment, then we must carefully monitor the “swim-with-dolphins” industry worldwide.
A. They cannot fulfill their lifelong dreams .
B. This possibly seems like less threatening behavior to them.
C. In the long term there could be harmful effects on the dolphin’s well-being.
D. It is frequently asked whether “swim-with-dolphins” tourism should be stopped.
E. So tour operators try to place eager swimmers as near as possible to the dolphins.
F. Over time this has turned into a worldwide tourist activity--swimming with dolphins.
G. In fact , only some baby dolphins will be relatively willing to participate in the interaction.

We’ve always been fascinated by consistently successful people. Most of them were not born into success. And they simply continue to do things that help them realize their full potential. 1.
• Create and pursue goals. Successful people are objective.2. They know what they are looking for and why they are fighting for it. Successful people always create and pursue their goals.
• Take decisive and immediate action. Sadly, very few people ever live to become the success story they dream about.3. You can’t change anything or make any sort of real-world progress without taking action. So make the decision and take action immediately.
• Focus on being productive, not being busy. Busy people are heading to work, meetings, social engagements, etc. But it may be an illusion. They’re like hamsters (仓鼠) running on a wheel. The solution: Slow down. Put first things first.4. And always remember, results are more important than the time it takes to achieve them.
• 5. If you’re selling a product line, don’t keep it so complicated. And if you’re trying to make a decision about something, don’t waste all your time evaluating every last detail of every possible option. Choose something that you think will work, give it a shot, and keep pressing forward.
A. Keep things simple.
B. Do one thing at a time.
C. It will be hard in the beginning.
D. They have realistic targets in mind.
E. Here are some things they do differently.
F. And that’s because they never take action.
G. Focus on making small, continuous improvements.

C What historical site impresses you most? I’ve always been fascinated by the pyramids in Egypt.A few years ago I braved a long queue and climbed through a narrow passage to reach the main chamber deep inside one of them.Like millions of other tourists, I marveled (赞叹) at stone-walled rooms full of the magic of this ancient civilization.
But popularity might be the destruction of such archaeological treasures.Take Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings for example. It lay untouched for more than 3,000 years until the British archaeologist Howard Carter uncovered it in 1922.Now more than 1,000 people a day walk through it.
But as more and more people visit, the temperature and humidity inside the tomb change. As a result, the beautifully decorated plaster is coming away from the rock.
In order to preserve its heritage, a replica (复制品) of the monument is being opened about 1 kilometer away from the actual burial site.Specialists have recorded every detail of Tutankhamun’s tomb and used the data to recreate it.
Adam Lowe from the organization behind the project says the copy is identical to the original. He believes visitors will want to become part of the force that protects it rather than a force that is leading to its destruction. So they won’t mind seeing a replica.
But for historian Tom Holland, a copy is still a copy.He believes that although preservation is important, there is something unique about places like Tutankhamun’s tomb.He says it was built by people who believed in the world of the spirits, the dead and the supernatural. You don’t have to believe in a god or gods to feel a place is consecrated (使圣化) and has a particular quality that can’t be reproduced.
What about you? Would you visit a replica of a monument rather than the original to help preserve it?
1.What may account for the destruction of some archaeological treasures like Tutankhamun’s tomb?
A.Climate change.
B.Copies.
C.Popularity.
D.Thieves.
2.What measures have been taken to preserve the heritage of Tutankhamun’s tomb?
A.Decorating the monument again.
B.Building a replica of the monument.
C.Limiting the number of visitors.
D.Moving the tomb away from the actual site.
3.The underlined word “identical” is closest in meaning to ________.
A.superior
B.Sensitive
C.Exposed
D.similar
4.Historian Tom Holland may hold the opinion that ________.
A.some unique ancient places can’t simply be replaced by replicas
B.visitors are advised to see replicas because preservation is first
C.ancient civilizations are consecrated and can’t be redecorated
D.visitors to ancient civilizations must believe in a god or gods

The fact that ants are fascinating insects has been known for some time. Now, scientists have discovered a large number of wood ants living in an abandoned underground storehouse in Templewo, Poland, despite having no obvious source of food.
Polish zoologist Wojciech Czechowski and his team began studying the underground colony in 2013. They found the ants built a 60-cm high nest in the soil directly over the storehouse vertical air pipe. As years passed, the metal covering on the pipe eroded, leaving behind a hole that thousands of worker ants accidentally slip into each day as they go about their daily chores. The scientists say that there are no sources of food in the storehouse. This means that the insects live in a state of near starvation.
In July 2015, the researchers disturbed part of the ant nest in search of larvae (幼虫), cocoons(茧), and queens. They found nothing, leading them to suspect that the lack of food and cold temperatures made reproduction impossible and that the group tending the nest is entirely made up of non-reproductive female workers. Their population is refilled every year, by a new rain of unfortunate ants that slide down the hole. The researchers say that when they returned in January 2016, the nest had been repaired. It appears that despite the terrible conditions, the worker ants do not stop constructing their nest.
Wood ants are known for their ability to adapt to bad living conditions. In this case, the millions of worker ants trapped in the storehouse have no choice. But instead of losing hope, they are making the best of the situation—a classic example of “when life gives you lesions make lemonade.”
1.How did the wood ants arrive in the storehouse?
A. They fell down there by accident.
B. The research team brought them there.
C. The storehouse builders left them there.
D. They were attracted by the environment.
2.What does the underlined word “eroded” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Expanded. B. Rotted.
C. Exploded. D. Melted.
3.What did the researchers find in the nest?
A. Larvae. B. Cocoons.
C. A queen. D. Worker ants.
4.Why did the population of wood ants remain steady?
A. They had enough food.
B. They were able to reproduce.
C. They adapted to the conditions.
D. They had new comers to join them.

The relationship between humans and animals has always been complex. Some cultures have developed entire belief systems around favored animals. Even in cultures with less formal belief systems, connections between people and animals still lead to commonly accepted opinions about animals.
These belief systems usually develop around the animals that interact (互动) with humans most frequently. Therefore, it should not be surprising that so many stories surround the most common of animals: rats. Rats live side by side with humans all over the world and regularly interact with people. Human-rat coexistence may be common all around the world, but different cultures respond to that closeness in different ways.
In the United States and Europe, one typical attitude is that the rat is a pest. This could be due to the common belief that rats spread disease. Actually, they don’t, at least not directly, but many people don’t know that. The Pied Piper of Hamlin, a well-known children’s story, is one example of how rats have been described in Western literature: in that story, rats cause such a problem that a town has to hire a piper to call them all away.
In many Latin American countries, the rat is described in a very different way. The story of the tooth fairy (a fairy believed by children to leave money while they sleep in exchange for a tooth that has come out) is common all over the world, but in Latin America, the “fairy” is a rat! Rats do have very strong teeth, which could explain the association. Clearly, this shows another attitude toward rats that is much more positive.
Yet another attitude toward the rat can be seen in the Chinese Zodiac (生肖). The Rat is one of the animals of the Zodiac. Like the other zodiac animals, the Rat is neither entirely good nor entirely bad. It’s described as clever and friendly, but also tricky and not entirely honest. That may be the most accurate description of the rat so far. Whether you like rats or not, it’s hard to deny their reputation for cleverness.
As many people are discovering these days, rats can even make excellent pets, so long as you remember to close the cage carefully!
1.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. A trend of keeping rats as pets.
B. How different cultures look at rats.
C. How humans get along with animals.
D. Favored animals in different cultures.
2.The rats in The Pied Piper of Hamlin appear______.
A. unpleasant B. honest C. smart D. unusual
3.The tooth fairy in Latin America mentioned in Paragraph4 is to show______.
A. the tooth fairy is lovely
B. rats look very frightening
C. rats are welcome in Latin American countries
D. the story of the tooth fairy is common all over the world
4.According to the author, rats______.
A. don’t spread disease
B. should be treated as pests
C. are fairly described in the Chinese Zodiac
D. are kept as pets by more and more people
5.The passage is probably taken from a ______.
A. travel guide B. news report C. nature magazine D. history textbook

Scientists have always been interested in the high level of organization in ant societies. American researchers have watched ants build life-saving rafts to keep afloat during floods. They also have recorded how ants choose their next queen — the female whose job is to produce eggs.
New technology is helping to improve researchers’ understanding of the insects. But there is still a lot to be learned.
Fire ants living in Brazilian forests are perfectly at home in an environment where flooding is common. To save themselves, the insects connect their legs together and create floating rafts. Some ant rafts can be up to 20 centimeters wide.
David Hu is an engineer with the Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech, saying, "If you have 100 ants, which means 600 legs, 99 percent of those legs will be connected to a neighbor. So they’re very, very good at keeping this network."
David Hu and other Georgia Tech researchers wanted to study ants and the secret of their engineering. They froze ant rafts and then looked at them with the help of computed technology, or CT images. The pictures showed that larger ants serve in central positions to which smaller ants hold. The larger ants create pockets of air that keep the insects afloat.
Scientists say small robots or materials that can change shape could be programmed in a similar way, working towards a shared goal.
Researchers at North Carolina State University are also studying ants. They examined how Indian jumping ants choose the leader of the colony when they lose their top female or queen.
1.The author takes fire ants as an example to tell us ________.
A. how ants survive B. how ants seek food
C. how ants communicate D. how ants live together
2.What can we know from what David Hu said in paragraph 4?
A. Ants know the way to keep in touch in the river.
B. Ants know the way to join together closely.
C. Ants know the way to look for each other.
D. Ants know the way to build a large raft.
3.Why did the larger ants serve in central positions in their ant rafts?
A. To stress their importance. B. To help all the ants float.
C. To fight against the enemies. D. To defend their top female.
4.What ideas do the ants give us according to the passage?
A. We can use similar-shaped machines in flooding areas.
B. We can combine small robots or materials into larger ones.
C. Small and shape-changeable things might work just like ants do.
D. Small robots or materials in the shape of ants can be made.
