Cooking food over a smoky fire is found everywhere in the world. It is often difficult to find wood for the fire. People who do not have wood must spend large amounts of money on cooking fuel. However, there is a much easier way to cook food using energy from the sun. Solar cookers, or ovens, have been used for centuries. A Swiss scientist made the first solar oven in 1767. Today, people are using solar cookers in many countries around the world. People use solar ovens to cook food and to heat drinking water to kill bacteria and other harmful organisms.
There are three kinds of solar ovens. The first is a box cooker. It is designed with a special wall that shines or reflects sunlight into the box. Heat gets trapped under a piece of glass or plastic covering the top of the cooker. A box oven is effective for slow cooking of large amounts of food.
The second kind of solar oven is a panel(嵌板式) cooker. It includes several flat walls, or panels, which directly reflect the sun’s light onto the food. The food is inside a separate container of plastic or glass that traps heat energy. People can build panel cookers quickly and with very few supplies. They do not cost much. In Kenya, for example, panel cookers are being manufactured for just two dollars.
The third kind of solar oven is a parabolic(抛物线的) cooker. It has rounded walls that aim sunlight directly into the bottom of the oven. Food cooks quickly in parabolic ovens. However, these cookers are hard to make. They must be re-aimed often to follow the sun. Parabolic cookers can also cause burns and eye injuries if they are not used correctly.
You can make solar ovens from boxes or heavy paper. They will not catch fire. Paper burns at 232 degrees Celsius. A solar cooker never gets that hot. Solar ovens cook food at low temperatures over long periods of time. This permits people to leave food to cook while they do other things.
To learn more about solar cooking, you can write to Solar Cookers International. The postal address is nineteen-nineteen Twenty-First Street, Sacramento, California, nine-five-eight-one-one, USA. Or you can visit the group’s Internet Web site. The address is www.solarcooking.org.

People living more than three thousand meters above sea level find it difficult to raise vegetables all year long. People living in the highlands of Peru and Bolivia, for example, cannot grow vegetables outdoors during the months of May through September. It is very cold in the highlands at that time of year. If traditional farming methods are used, vegetables will not survive.
However, there is another way to grow vegetables throughout the year in cold areas. It is a method of gardening developed by a private agency called World Neighbors. The method uses “hot houses” built below ground. A hot house is a building covered with plastic or glass in which vegetables or flowers are grown. The traditional hot house is built above ground.
The air temperature is cold in the highlands of Peru and Bolivia during the winter. But, the winter sun is hot. So, World Neighbors advises farmers there to build hot houses below ground. The design is simple. The material does not cost much. Here is how World Neighbors says to build it: Dig a hole two and one-half meters wide and six meters long. Make it about two meters deep. Build wall with a door in one end of the hole. Dig steps from the ground down to the door.
Now, build a wall along the top edge of the hole. Make it about one-half meters tall. Earth bricks work fine. Build two shorter walls on the ends. These will be uneven; one side will be as high as the existing wall. The other side will be at ground level. Leave a small opening in each of these sloping walls. This prevents the hot house from becoming too hot. Now, make the roof. Build a wood frame. Cover it with clear plastic. Connect it to the brick walls.
The underground hot house we have described is large enough for two raised vegetable beds. Each is one meter wide and six meters long. Each is seeded and watered just as if it were in a garden above ground.
The dirt walls protect the growing plants from the cold. The clear plastic roof permits the sun’s heat to enter. At night, the roof should be covered with straw. This helps prevent cold air from entering. An under ground hot house this size will provide enough vegetables for one family. Groups needing more vegetables can make it bigger.
66. If you lived in Peru, you _______.
A. should raise the special kinds of vegetables that can endure cold
B. could not plant at all
C. had to work out some new unusual plans
D. would not have many vegetables to eat
67. To our surprise, the “hot houses” invented by World Neighbors are _______.
A. covered with a transparent plastic ceiling
B. built under ground
C. quite small
D. hotter than traditional ones
68. The hot house can be kept warm by using _______.
A. a big oven B. an electricity heater
C. the heat of the earth’s interior D. the sun shine
69. The measure to prevent the hot house from becoming too hot is to _______.
A. make the roof sloped B. dig holes on the walls
C. make the wall not vertical D. make the walls shorter than the ground level
70. According to the passage, the method suggested by World Neighbors is _______.
A. new and difficult B. uneasy to explain
C. at trial step D. simple and practical

People often talk about how difficult it is to keep a healthy lifestyle while on vacation. A cruise (船)is the perfect example--too much food and too little exercise.1.Then I realized that’s of taking such vacations, we would all be better off taking vacations that encourage healthy behavior. Things like hiking and cycling are not only healthy, but they're cheap! 2.-we couldn't afford to do such else!
Gerhard Strauss-Blasche and colleagues examined the links between vacation environment and recovery. 3. They filled out questionnaires within two weeks of returning from a short vacation. Post-vacation recovery was assessed by quantifying how closely subjects agreed with the statement "In comparison with the two weeks before vacation, I now feel mentally fitter, feel more balanced and relaxed, can concentrate better during work, feel physically fitter, and do my work more easily.”
4.?Physical activity during the trip was positively associated with post-vacation recovery scores. In other words, the more physically active people were during their vacation, the more likely they were to feel relaxed upon their return. 5..In fact, I wouldn't take this study too seriously. But I don't think it's surprising that people who engage in(参加)healthy behaviors during a vacation might feel better upon their return. So instead of looking at your vacation as a potential block to your healthy lifestyle, why not look at it as a chance to improve your healthy behaviors?
A.I thought a lot about this issue
B.So what did the researchers find
C.Now of course this is only one study
D.The study included 191 German males and females
E.That's why my wife Daun and I first started taking cycling vacations
F.Limited evidence supports the idea that healthy vacations leave you feeling better
G.Why would people choose to eat unhealthy food and perform very little physical activity

How to persuade people
Convincing people that your way is the best way is often very difficult —especially when you’re not quite sure why they’re saying no. The trick is to get them wondering why they’re saying no. 1..
Understand how timing is everything. Knowing how to persuade people isn’t just in words and body language — it’s also in knowing the right time to talk to them. 2., you will most likely achieve faster, better results.
Get to know them. A large part of whether or not persuasion is effective is based on the general relationship between you and your client/son/friend/employee. If you don’t know the person well, it’s vital to start building this relationship immediately — find common ground as soon as possible. Humans, in general, are more fond of people that are similar to them. 3..
4.. People are more persuaded by a fast, confident talker than accuracy. The faster you talk, the less time your listener has to process what you’ve said and question it. You may create the feeling that you truly grasp the subject by running through the facts at warp speed, confident of them all.
Create urgency. In order to get people to act in the moment, you have to be able to create a sense of urgency. 5., it’s unlikely they’ll change their minds in the future. You must persuade people in the present; it’s all that matters.
A. Talk fast
B. Communicate with others
C. If someone is aware of this
D. And with the right tricks, you can do it
E. So find parallels and make them known
F. If they’re not motivated enough to want whatever you have right now
G. If you approach people when they are more relaxed and open to discussion

Blind tasting is a very strange activity. Contrary to what many people imagine, it has nothing to do with blindfolds. It involves tasting a wine without seeing the label and it can deliver shocking surprises. I tasted seven champagnes (香槟) blind with a group of professionals recently. There was a shock when they discovered the wine most of them preferred carried a label they regarded as their least favorite. That sort of result is especially common with champagne, the most image-driven rather than quality-driven wine of all. But it happens all the time when wine is tasted blind.
Because I’m interested in how wines really taste instead of how I think they should, I taste wine blind as often as I can, especially when assessing similar young wines. But blind tasting when you know absolutely nothing about the wine in front of you is something completely different. The most difficult Master of Wine exams include three sessions during which you have a dozen glasses in front of you and nothing more helpful than a printed exam paper asking you to identify each wine as closely as possible, and assess its quality.
Now that the MW is behind me, I taste wine completely blind only very rarely, and never in public. So my blind tastings these days are round the dinner table with good friends and once a year when I act as a judge, with Hugh Johnson, in the Oxford vs Cambridge wine-tasting competition. This is the most extraordinary match, always held before the Boat Race but taken just as seriously nowadays. This year’s taste-off took place at the end of last month, as usual in the Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall in London.
1.Which of the following is true about Blind tasting?
A. Blind tasting is the professional way to identify a wine.
B. Blind tasting usually has the right result.
C. Blind tasting means tasting a wine with one’s eyes covered.
D. Blind tasting is tasting a wine without seeing the label.
2.Why did the professionals get shocked at the result of their blind tasting?
A. They got all the results correctly.
B. They didn’t recognize their favorite at all.
C. The writer made no mistakes.
D. Champagnes can not be tasted blind.
3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The Boat Race is taken more seriously than the wine race.
B. The Oxford v Cambridge wine-tasting competition is held annually.
C. I didn’t act as a judge last year.
D. Pall Mall is chosen as the competition place for the first time.
