At the age of 14, James Harrison had a major chest operation and he required 13 units (3.4 gallons) of blood afterwards. The blood donations saved his life, and he decided that once he turned 18, he would begin donating blood as regularly as he could.
More than 60 years and almost 1,200 donations later, Harrison, whose blood contains an antibody (抗体) that has saved the lives of 2.4 million babies from miscarriages (流产), retired as a blood donor on May 11. Harrison’s blood is valuable because he naturally produces Rh-negative blood, which contains Rh-positive antibodies. His blood has been used to create anti-D in Australia since 1967.
“Every bottle of anti-D ever made in Australia has James in it,” Robyn Barlow, the Rh program director told the Sydney Morning Herald. “It’s an amazing thing. He has saved millions of babies. I cry just thinking about it.” Since then, Harrison has donated between 500 and 800 milliliters of blood almost every week. “I’d keep going if they let me,” Harrison told the Herald. His doctors said it was time to stop the donations. They had already extended the age limit for blood donations for him, and they’re cutting him off now to protect his health.
Harrison’s retirement is a blow to the Rh treatment program in Australia. Only 160 donors support the program, and finding new donors has proven to be difficult. But Harrison’s retirement from giving blood doesn’t mean he’s completely out of the game. Scientists are collecting and cataloging his DNA to create a library of antibodies and white blood cells that could be the future of the anti-D program in Australia.
1.Why did James Harrison decide to donate blood as regularly as he could?
A.Because he wanted to be a celebrity.
B.Because he was saved by the blood donations when he was young.
C.Because his blood is valuable.
D.Because the Rh treatment program in Australia need him.
2.What can we learn from the underlined sentence in paragraph 3?
A.Robyn Barlow was sad because millions of babies suffer from blood disease.
B.Robyn Barlow was worried because Harrison may die of losing too much blood.
C.Robyn Barlow was moved by Harrison’s donations.
D.Robyn Barlow was frightened by Harrison’s crazy behavior.
3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Harrison’s retirement will not affect the Rh program.
B.After Harrison’s retirement, the Rh program will fail.
C.Harrison’s influence to the Rh program will still exist after his retirement.
D.A library has been built for the study of Harrison’s DNA .
4.Which word can best describe Harrison?
A.Patient. B.Diligent.
C.Talented. D.Devoted.

Sorry to say,our brains naturally start slowing down at the Cruelty young age of 30.It used to be thought that this couldn’t be helped, but new studies show that people of any age can train their brains to work faster.“Your brain is a learning machine,”saying University of California scientist Dr. Michael Merzenich.Given the right tools,we can train our brains to act like they did when we were younger. All that’s required is the practice designed just for the purpose:a few exercises for the mind.
Merzenich has developed a computer-based training method to speed up the process(过程) in which the brain deals with information (positscience.com).Since much of the data we receive comes through speech, the Brain Fitness Program works with language and hearing to better speed and accuracy(准确性).
Over the course of training, the program starts asking you to distinguish(辨别) sounds (between“dog”and“bog”,for example) at an increasingly faster speed. It’s a bit like tennis instructor, says Merzenich, hitting balls at you—faster and faster to keep you challenged(受到挑战).You may start out slow, but before long you’re pretty quick.
The biggest finding in brain research in the last ten years is that the brain at any age is highly plastic. If you ask your brain to learn,it will learn. And it may even speed up while in the process.
To keep your brain young and plastic you can do one of a million new activities that challenge and excite you:playing table tennis or bridge, doing crossword puzzles, learning a language...“When it comes to preventing ageing, you really do ‘use it or lose it’,”says Barbara Sahakian, professor at Cambridge University.

Some kids start to drink alcohol (酒精) at a young age. They think it is part of becoming an adult. They also think drinking is not that bad because so many people do it.They feel it is not as bad as taking drugs (毒品). It is easy for kids to get liquor(酒精饮料)by using fake identification (伪造证件).

Kids who drink sometimes stop doing things they normally liked to do.They may keep telephone calls and meetings a secret and not want anybody to touch their things. They act moody(喜怒无常) and do not have the same eating and sleeping habits.

Greg Evans started to study film at Ryerson University, but had a change of heart and switched to social work at George Brown College in second year.Yet the college recognized only one of Evans' general-interest credits(学分) from Ryerson , and also made him take English all over again although he had passed it at university.
“So I spent time and money taking a course I had already taken before”, complained Evans."The system really needs to change." Evans was part of a chorus of Ontario students on Monday cheering a new $ 73.7 million five-year plan to help students switch from college to university, and from university to college.
After years' of urging from students, the Ontario government set up a new Credit Transfer Innovation loud to help students move back and forth between the more hands-on courses of community college to the often broader academic focus of a university degree." We hear horror stories about students who can't get recognition from one institution for a very similar course at another, and in one case I believe the same professor was teaching them both," noted Malloy after announcing the new fund.
Individual colleges and universities have decided on nearly 500 joint deals to honor each other's credits in certain courses. Each school is required to set targets for more credit-transfer agreements, and link these increases to provincial funding.
More than 4,000 college graduates transfer (转换) to university in Ontario every year twice as many as eight years ago, noted Justin Fox, president of the College Student Alliance.Yet Ontario universities and colleges have been cautious about transferring credits, in part to avoid copying each other's courses, noted Bonnie Patterson, president of the Council of Ontario Universities ,who welcomed the increased flexibility.
