Lill was a shy , young girl who grew up in a village. At the age of 16, her father forced her to drop out of school and find a job to help the family.
With poor education, skills and hope, the young girl would take the bus into the big cities of Windsor and Detroit, walk aimlessly about and then return home every day. She couldn't even bring herself to knock on a door.
As the days passed, Lill knew she had to have the courage to knock on a door. On one of her trips, Lill saw a sign at Carhartt Overall Company, saying, “Help Wanted, Secretary. Apply Within. ” She walked up to the office and was met by the office manager Margaret, who sat her down at a typewriter and said with a smile, “Let's see how good you really are."
She directed Lill to type a single letter and then left. Lill looked at the clock: 11: 40 am. She figured that she could run away in the crowd when the clock struck 12. But she knew she should at least stay and give it a try.
On her first try, she got through one line. It had five words and she made four mistakes. She pulled the paper out and threw it away. The clock read 11: 45. “In fifteen minutes," she said to herself, “I'll escape from the company, and she will never see me again. ” On her second try, Lill got through a full paragraph, but still made many mistakes. Again she pulled out the paper, threw it out and started over. This time she completed the whole letter, but still there were many errors in it. She looked at the clock: 11:55 — five minutes to freedom.

When I was young, I always knew my parents had trouble with money. We would go to yard sales all the time, buy everyday supplies at Dollarama and work and eat at a soup kitchen four nights a week.
Then, a new man walked into the soup kitchen and asked me what my name was. As I told him that my name was Angela, my mom handed me the soup spoon and hair net(发网) to start getting to work. After that, I couldn’t find the strange man again. I searched everywhere for him and even asked the other men and women in the kitchen if they had seen him. My mom thought I was going crazy, saying that there was no one with me when she came to hand me my stuff. She said I had been sitting alone and that it seemed I was talking to myself.
Later that night in the car, my mom was crying. I asked her what was wrong and she told me that the rent on our apartment had gone up and that my grandma had died. She didn’t know how she was going to pay for the funeral and the rent. I guaranteed that I would help pick up the odds and ends(杂事) before she made as much as possible.
The moment we got into the apartment building, she asked me to run to the mail room and grab the mail. I went and the only thing I could find was one single envelope. A familiar man called me back saying he thought I left something in our mailbox. I reached in and pulled out a huge envelope but I couldn’t tell what was in it.
I brought the envelopes up to my mom. She opened the first one and found our first super expensive rent bill. She then walked into her room, saying she couldn’t handle to open the other one.
Paragraph 1:
I looked at the envelope and saw this: Dear Angela and Family. Love, Your Friend.

There was a rich couple who was throwing a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn’t mind paying for it. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time’s meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn’t deliver their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? This is our goods and he was supposed to deliver them. It seems you poor thieves are stealing our goods and going to sell them.”

The Make-up Guy
Dave was a make-up (化妆) artist who regularly held makeup artistry classes at the local community college. He was well known as an excellent trainer and enjoyed great popularity.
Usually, the majority of his students were middle-aged housewives, who wanted to fine-tune their make-up skills so as to make themselves more attractive. But this time, it was beyond him that his class was attended by a man as well.
The new student was a gentleman in his best years with a seemingly boundless interest in make-up artistry. He was keen to learn as much as he possibly could and asked questions whenever and wherever possible. He was so absorbed in learning that he wouldnt stop until he was satisfied with the result of his work.
Understandably, the man was the number one subject of conversation when the other women were alone.
Speculations (猜测) quickly started to spread. Why did he learn make-up? Was he to seek for a woman to be his life partner? How about my neighbor’s youngest daughter? Why on earth would he attend such a woman class? Who could it be?
Doubts like this came crowding in.
The community college was placed in a remote rural area, which was why the other participants were quite doubtful of the mans intentions.
Throughout the lessons, ignoring the curious women around him, the man carefully listened and wrote everything down he learned, leaving the women more and more curious and puzzled.
When the day and class were slowly coming to an end, the gossiping women simply could not hide their curiosity any longer, for they knew it was time to remove their doubts, otherwise
Finally, one of them couldnt resist her curiosity, so she picked up the courage and asked him why he was so interested in make-up artistry.
What followed was a dead silence. After what seemed a century, he slowly opened his mouth and here came the most inspiring beautiful reply.
Paragraph 1:
He said his beloved wife partially lost her eyesight because of diabetes (糖尿病) and she was no longer able to apply her make-up.

There was once a wonderful old man who loved everything: animals, spiders, insects and allsorts of living things.
One day while walking through the woods, the old man found a cocoon(茧) . He decided to take the cocoon home to watch its beautiful transformation from a little cocoon to a beautiful butterfly.
A few days later, the cocoon started to move. It moved frantically! He sat and watched it struggle and struggle for several hours. But it seemed not to make any progress. Then the old man felt sorry for the little butterfly inside, and rushed to its aid. With a pair of scissors and gently, he cut a little opening in the cocoon so the butterfly could come out. And then the butterfly came out of its cocoon. It had a swollen body and small, fragile wings, but it never was able to fly.
He was quite puzzled. Had he accidentally killed the little butterfly? No, it was still moving a little bit. Maybe it was sick. Then he decided that the best thing he could do for the butterfly was to place it gently back into its cocoon. He did so, and placed a drop of honey on it to seal the cocoon, leaving the butterfly to nestle (筑巢) in its natural state.
The next day he noticed that the cocoon was moving again. It struggled and struggled. Finally the butterfly broke free from its cocoon and stretched its wings out. Its beautiful wings were filled with wonderful colors! It took off! It was flying!
The wonderful butterfly flew and flew till it was almost out of the old man’ s sight. What a joy, he exclaimed! But then he started to think: what did I do wrong by trying to help that beautiful little butterfly out at first?
Finally the answer came out.

A young man had bought an old house that was in bad shape, but he and his wife believed they could restore it. They immediately went to work. Their goal was to have the old building look best for New Year’s Eve get-together.
Just two days before New Year, however, a storm swept through the area, leaving a hole in the wall of the house. There was obviously no time to repair the damage before New Year. Then, the sad couple attended a local auction(拍卖)that afternoon. One of the items put up for bids was an old gold-and-ivory-colored tablecloth. Seized by an inspiration, the young man was the highest bidder at $ 6.50. His idea was to hang the cloth to cover the ragged hole.
On the day before New Year, it was snowy. As the young man unlocked the house door, he noticed an old woman standing at the bus stop. He knew the bus wouldn’t be there within at least half an hour, so he invited her inside to keep warm.
When the woman walked in and saw the tablecloth, she rushed at it and said excitedly, “It’s mine. It is my tablecloth.” She told the surprised man its history and even showed him her name in one comer of the tablecloth. She and her husband had once lived in Vienna, Austria, and their village was hit by a deadly disease. So they decided to flee to Switzerland, but her husband told her to leave first, saying he had something urgent to deal with. A few days later, it was reported that the bus her husband took fell off the cliff(悬崖)and he was never to be found. Her husband was believed to have died. Touched by her story, the young couple asked about her address, planning to send the tablecloth to her after New Year. As the bus came, she left.
In the candlelight of New Year’s Eve, the tablecloth looked even more beautiful. As the man’s friends left the house, they thanked the man for his arrangement and mentioned how beautiful the house looked.

For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition (学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret. I didn’t give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I’ll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why don’t you come back to school?”
I laughed: “There’s no way! I’m 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

Jenny was a pretty eight-year-old girl.
One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic pearl necklace, by which she was totally defeated. How eagerly she wanted it! But when he saw the price, her heart sank a little. She gathered up her courage and asked her mother if she would buy it for her, her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. I can buy you the necklace, but when we get home we should make up a list of housework that you can do to pay for the necklace.” Jenny agreed immediately, feeling a burst of joy. So her mother bought the pearl necklace for her. Jenny worked on her housework determinedly and earnestly every day. Soon Jenny had paid off the pearls.
Jenny had a very loving daddy. When Jenny went to bed, he would read Jenny her favorite story. One night when he finished the story, he said, “Jenny, do you love me?” “Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you,” the little girl said delightedly, with a broad smile on her face. “Well, then, give me your pearls.” Hearing that, Jenny froze there, an anxious expression twisting her face. “Oh! Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Rosy, my favorite doll. Remember her? You gave her to me last year for my birthday. Okay?” “Oh no, darling, that's okay.” Her father brushed her cheek with a kiss, gently and calmly. “Good night, little one.”
A week later, her father once again asked Jenny after her story, “Do you love me?” “Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you.” the little girl murmured softly, trying to escape from her father’s eyes. “Well, then, give me your pearls.” “Oh, Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Ribbons, my toy horse. Do you remember her? She's my favorite.” The little girl begged. “No, that's okay,” her father said, smiling broadly and sweetly and brushed her cheek again with a kiss. “God bless you, little one. Sweet dreams.”

Zigfried was a little mouse who used to live with a happy family. The children of the family would hug him in the arms and discussed about their Christmas gifts. Zigfried enjoyed every hour of them, especially when he was drinking hot chocolate. Suddenly he was woken up by the noise coming from his own stomach. He stretched himself and rubbed his eyes. Slowly and feebly he climbed to the windowsill. Zigfried blew his breath on the frosty window of the farmhouse and rubbed it to see the outside. Still nobody came. Maybe today, he thought hopefully. It was only a few days before Christmas and he was watching for a miracle.
This farmhouse had been empty too long. All the equipment was covered with dust and dirt. Everything looked like dead ashes. It needed a family. Only a family’s moving in could light up the house. Again Zigfried’s stomach made a noise. He realized that he hadn’t eaten anything since yesterday. He jumped from the windowsill, took a bag from his home, and went next door to Farmer Mike’s. He wished to get something to eat for the present. If lucky enough, he could store some sandwiches, cheese or chocolates for the coming of his granny who would arrive on Christmas Eve to celebrate with him, bringing a Christmas gift.
Farmer Mike’s house had been a great place for the little mouse until the farmer married a wife who had a cat. The cat was in and out of the window constantly and meowed horribly into the bargain. Zigfried trembled when he thought of that narrow escape with the cat. He looked around carefully as he stole into the room where grain was stored and was quite nervous as he filled his bag with wheat.

I have a friend who is afraid of spiders. This isn’t very unusual;a lot of people are afraid of spiders. I don’t really like spiders much myself. But my friend isn’t afraid of spiders in any normal way. She isn’t just afraid of spiders, she is totally, completely and utterly terrified of them. When she sees a spider, she shivers all over and sometimes she freezes completely—she can’t move at all because she is so scared. Sometimes she even faints.
She decided to do something about her terror,so she went to visit a doctor. After knowing my friend’s situation, the doctor got out a small spider from his desk. It wasn’t a real spider. It was made of plastic. Even so,my friend screamed when she saw it. “Don’t worry,”said the doctor. “It’s not a real spider. ”“I know,”said my friend. “But I’m afraid of it just the same. ”
“Hmm,”said the doctor. “A serioos case. . . ”He put the plastic spider on the desk. When my friend stopped screaming, the doctor told her to touch it. When she stopped screaming again—the idea of touching the plastic spider was enough to make her scream—she touched it. At first she touched it for just one second. She shivered all over, but at least she managed to touch it. “OK,”said the psychiatrist. “that’s all for today and you can go home now. ”
My friend went back the next day,and found the plastic spider was already on the doctor’s desk. This time she touched it and held it for five minutes. Then the doctor told her to go home and come back the next day. The next day she went back and the plastic spider was on her chair. She had to move the spider so she could sit down.
