One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic pearl necklace, by which she was totally defeated. How eagerly she wanted it! She gathered up her courage and asked her mother if she would buy it for her, her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. I can buy you the necklace, but when we get home we should make up a list of housework that you can do to pay for the necklace.” Jenny agreed immediately, feeling a burst of joy. So her mother bought the pearl necklace for her. Jenny worked on her housework determinedly and earnestly every day. Soon Jenny had paid off the pearls.
Jenny had a very loving daddy. When Jenny went to bed, he would read Jenny her favorite story. One night when he finished the story, he said, “Jenny, do you love me?” “Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you,” the little girl said delightedly, with a broad smile on her face. “Well, then, give me your pearls.” Hearing that, Jenny froze there, an anxious expression twisting her face. “Oh! Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Rosy, my favorite doll. Remember her? You gave her to me last year for my birthday. Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe?”
The officer looked at him. “Well, nothing is absolutely safe. Crossing the road isn’t absolutely safe. But the danger is minimal. We wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer?”
Alan nodded but felt uneasy. Sleeping in a tent with other campers had sounded OK, but the idea of being alone in the night made him tremble.
Earlier that day, the officer had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river. That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not. Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird swooping(俯冲) and wondered if it was an owl. week of hard work, the bridge was completed. They all agreed to ask Mr. Robinson to officially open the bridge. “He has helped us most,” David said.
“And tomorrow morning we can go around to all the houses,” added Roy, “and tell the people that the bridge will be officially opened at six o’clock. Then we can remind them about their promises about money,” Roy added.
“But we don’t really want that, do we?” said Robert.
“Yes,” said Helen. “We need it and I think we should collect it.” She glanced quickly at the others, who nodded.
The next day, the students visited all the houses again. They were surprised when they saw how pleased the people were with them. By two o’clock they had collected over a hundred dollars. By five o’clock, unknown to Robert, they had spent it.
