How is this virus transmitted?
This is an outbreak of disease that started in Wuhan, one of the central Chinese cities. It’s caused by a novel coronavirus that means it’s brand-new. 1.
What are the symptoms?
The virus is from a family called the coronaviruses. The symptoms of this illness are pretty mundane (平 凡的) on the face of it: it’s a dry cough fever and then breathing problems. 2. However, as for the more severe cases, people have gone on to develop viral pneumonia, and all the deaths have been among those people.
3.
This brand-new coronavirus came from animals, and it’s believed that the source was actually a seafood market in Wuhan, which also sells wild animals. So far all the cases have come out of Wuhan. But some people haven’t picked it up there.
Should I be panicking about this outbreak?
As we can see, older people are ending up in hospital with the virus. They’re usually over 40, and the very youngest person diagnosed is about 13 or 14 years old. So it doesn’t appear to be affecting small children.
4.. Basically, their immune systems are not very strong, and they’re going to find it very hard to fight off a virus.
It’s necessary for ordinary people to wear masks and doctors should wear protective clothing.
How is this virus transmitted?
We’ve only just discovered that the new coronavirus is actually transmitted from one person to another. It was hoped at first actually that it just came from animals as all coronaviruses do. 5. .So we’ve got people to people transmission, because the market has been closed for sometime, and there are cases in people who’ve never been near it.
A.It seems quite mild in lots of people.
B.Where have cases been confirmed so far?
C.It is so new that actually it doesn’t have a name yet.
D.People diagnosed with viral pneumonia will die.
E.It is a brand-new virus so we don’t know how it’s going to behave.
F.Those confirmed cases who have died tend to have heart disease or cancer already.
G.Now it looks as though it is actually passed from one human being to another, however.

The 2009 outbreak of HINI is a new kind of influenza virus, commonly referred to as “swine flu”. It is thought to be a break of four known kinds of influenza. A virus subtype H1N1: one endedmic(流行病) in humans, one endemic in birds, and two endemic in pigs (swine). The source of the outbreak in humans is still unknown, but cases were first discovered in the U.S. and soon after in Mexico.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC),it is not yet clear how serious this new virus actually is compared with other influenza viruses, although on May 26 they stated that new cases in the U.S. have probably reached the hightest point, and most cases have so far been mild relative to “seasonal flus”. But because this is a new virus, most people will not have immunity(免疫性) to it, and illness may eventually become more severe and widspread. The H1N1 flu mainly spreads in the same way that regular “seasonal influenza” spreads through the air from coughs and sneezes or touching those infected. It cannot be transmitted from eating cooked pork or by being in close contact with pigs.
As yet there is no vaccine(疫苗) available to prevent infection although companies are in the planning stages for having one available later this year. But there is concern that the virus could vary again over the coming months, leading to a new and potentially more dangerous flu outbreak later in the year, and a vaccine that will be less effective in preventing its spread.
As of May 27, the virus had spread to more than 50 countries; however, over 80% of reported deaths have taken place in Mexico. According to the CDC, the fact that the flu’s infection activity is now monitored more closely may help explain why more flu cases than normal are being recorded in Mexico, the United States and other countries.
1.The 2009 outbreak of H1N1 is thought to ________.
A.be concerned with four endmics
B.have come from the virus from pigs
C.occur because of unknown virus in Mexico
D.be caused because of people without immunity
2.According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ______.
A.most people won’t be infected with the flu B.the H1N1 will not be too mild to cause many deaths in the world C.the present situation allows of no optimist D.H1N1 can be transmitted by touching pigs |
3.To make people worried more is that ________.
A.no effective vaccine can prevent the virus from spreading B.the virus will mutate in the following months C.a seasonal influenza will break out D.the newly-developed vaccine will lose effectiveness |
4.From the passage we can learn that ________.
A.every country is watching closely the spreading of the H1N1
B.more than one-fourth of the deaths from the H1N1 are in Mexico
C.only the United States and Mexico recorded the cased of influenza
D.effective medicine has been produced to cure the H1N1

The largest outbreak of the deadly disease Ebola(埃博拉) was caused by an infected bat biting a toddler, say a group of international researchers.
The 17-strong team of European and African tropical disease researchers, ecologists and anthropologists have spent three weeks investigating the outbreak of the disease in Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. The researchers captured the bats and other creatures near the village of Meliandoua in remote eastern Guinea, where the disease began in December 2013. The boy was bitten and passed the infection on to his mother and both died within a week. The disease was then spread far and wide by the people who came to the funeral.
Most of the previous outbreaks have been caused by meat from dead infected animals collected by hunters who then sell it on. Fruit bats, however, are widely eaten in rural West Africa.
The team, led by epidemiologist(流行病学家) Herr Leendertz, a disease ecologist at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin, are expected to publish their results in a major journal soon.
Herr Leendertz’s team believe that an infected straw-colored fruit bat brought the disease to Guinea. The mammals are known to travel long distances and usually settle in forests near cities. Herr Leendertz said, “ The evidence is not 100 percent and we can only say that it is possible. They can travel far in one night. I don't think an individual bat or colony(群体) migrated all the way from Congo or Gabon to West Africa. These big colonies are connected. There is a possibility for the virus to mix between colonies. The bats share the same fruit. It is likely not to have even been one species of bat. The virus may jump from one species to another."
If the bat theory is confirmed, the locals would try to destroy the colonies, which, Herr Leendertz says, would be an ecological disaster, because bats pollinate(传授花粉) plants and kill insects. And bat hunts would also only increase human contact with potentially infected animals.
1.What’s the purpose of the 17-strong team?
A. To look into the outbreak of Ebola.
B. To help the people who suffer from Ebola.
C. To help cure the infected boy of Ebola.
D. To make a study of the bats including fruit bats.
2.In Herr Leendertz’s opinion, ______.
A. people can do nothing to prevent the disease
B. the disease Ebola may jump from one species to another
C. the result of the research should be published immediately
D. the straw-colored fruit bats usually settle in forests in the rural areas
3.If the bat theory is confirmed, ______.
A. the disease Ebola will be controlled
B. all the fruit bats in Africa would be killed
C. plants would not be pollinated in the future
D. the ecosystem in Africa might lose its balance
4.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. A toddler was bitten by a bat and died.
B. The disease Ebola is incurable at present.

How to DIY Your Own Mask
During the outbreak of COVID-19, one of the must-have items is the mask. However, many countries are in bad need of medical masks and other protective equipment. 1. But we can make our own masks which can be used repeatedly. Now, let’s look at the most popular DIY method for soda bottle gas masks.
2. And it doesn’t require huge skills. With necessary materials and a little training, it can be made in 15 minutes.
To make such a mask project, you’ll require a sharp cutting tool, a market, glue, a 2-liter soda bottle, rubberized foam insulation strip (泡沫橡胶绝缘条) and one N95 mask. Total cost may be $5.
First, you’ll have to clean the 2-liter plastic bottle. After that, draw a U-shaped area using the marker. 3. Then start with a smaller cut and work your way up from there. Cut away the bottom of the bottle and you’ll end up with a basic shape.
Next, use the rubberized foam insulation as a seal for the edges of the bottle. 4. This will serve as a resting place for the N95 mask. Then cut off the N95 mask’s edging carefully. And place is inside the neck of the bottle. The elastic bands (橡皮筋) from the N95 mask will be used to secure the gas mask firmly on your face. Then a DIY gas mask is completed.
Do remember to keep the gas mask stored in a well sealed plastic bag. 5.
A.In this way you can make good use of the bag.
B.This can prevent it from getting polluted.
C.The soda bottle gas mask is very simple to make.
D.In this situation it is hard for people to get enough masks.
E.It should be big enough to fit your face and yet not too big.
F.Actually, the idea of DIY gas masks dates back to WW II.
G.You should also make a circle of foam insulation inside the bottle.
