Domestic airline passengers will be able to make phone calls and send e-mails from the sky from next year, a local carrier has said.
Shenzhen Airlines said on Monday it has signed an agreement with Geneva-based On-Air to provide passengers with in-flight communications services on all its planes by the end of 2009. The service will be introduced on three aircraft ahead of the 2008 Olympics, on two routes----from Shenzhen to Beijing and Shenzhen to Shanghai, the airline said.
Passengers will be able to use their own electronic devices to send e-mails and short messages, make calls and surf the Internet, it said. The service is expected to be of particular interest to business travelers.
According to a survey at the end of last year, China had 4.55 million mobile-phone subscribers. Ninety-three percent of those polled said they wished they could send and receive e-mails and messages while on a plane.
Despite the introduction of the new service, passengers will still be prevented from using their cell phones and laptops when the plane is taking off and landing, or flying at less than 3,000 m above sea level, the official said.
The official said the new service would not lead to an increase in ticket prices, but users of Chinese mobile-phone services will be charged the international roaming rate for any calls made from the sky.
Shenzhen Airlines is the first Chinese carrier to provide such in-flight communications services. Its president, Li Kun, said installing the facilities will cost 4.5 million yuan ($596,000) per aircraft. The justification for a university is that it preserves the connection between knowledge and the zest of life, by uniting the young and the old in the imaginative consideration of learning. The university imparts information, but it imparts it imaginatively. At least, this is the function which it should perform for society. A university which fails in this respect has no reason for existence. This atmosphere of excitement, arising from imaginative consideration, transforms knowledge. A fact is no longer a burden on the memory, it is energizing as the poet of our dreams and as the architect of our purposes.
Imagination is not to be divorced from the facts: it is a way of illuminating the facts. It works by eliciting the general principles which apply to the facts, as they exist, and then by an intellectual survey of alternative possibilities which are consistent with those principles. It enables men to construct an intellectual vision of a new world, and it preserves the zest of life by the suggestion of satisfying purposes.
Youth is imaginative, and if the imagination be strengthened by discipline, this energy of imagination can in great measure be preserved through life. The tragedy of the world is that those who are imaginative have but slight experience, and those who are experienced have feeble imagination. Fools act on imagination without knowledge; pedants(学究)act on knowledge without imagination. The task of university is to weld together imagination and experience.
1. The main theme of the passage is ____.
A. the access to knowledge in university B. the function of universities
C. the role of imagination in our lives
D. the relationship between imagination and experience
2. According to the passage, the justification for a university is that ____.
A. it presents facts and experience to young and old
B. it imparts knowledge to imaginative people
C. it combines imagination with knowledge and experience
D. it enables men to construct an intellectual vision of the world
3. The word “eliciting” in paragraph 2 probably means ____.
A. applying B. challenging C. drawing forth D. preserving
4. Which of the following is NOT discussed as one of the things imagination can do?
A. It makes our life exciting and worthwhile. B. It helps us to understand the world.
C. It helps us to formulate Laws about the facts. D. It provides inspiration to the artists.
5. According to the author, the tragedy of the world is that ____.
A. our energy of imagination cannot be preserved B. our imagination is seldom disciplined
C. we grow old inevitably D. too many people are either fools or pedants

It is quite natural for all of us to want to preserve and protect the foods we purchase. With that in mind, we always think that the best way to do that is by putting them in our refrigerators. However, the following foods should never be placed in the fridge.
◆ Bananas
Bananas should never be placed inside the refrigerator because they keep nutrients better outside the fridge. Bananas are better kept on the counter until they ripen. The cold temperatures actually slow down the ripening process of the bananas, while the wetness and darkness of the fridge will only lead to rotting.
◆Potatoes
Potatoes should be placed in a cool, dry and dark space. The cold temperature of the fridge can turn starch (淀粉) into sugar more rapidly. It is also recommended that potatoes be removed from plastic or paper bags they may have been placed in. Also, keep them unwashed, as well in an uncovered cardboard box.
◆Garlic(大蒜)
Placing garlic in your refrigerator will actually cause it to shoot. The garlic will also rotten and even rubbery. Moreover, inside your fridge, the look of the garlic will rarely change. This means you won’t be able to tell if it’s any good until you finally slice it open.
◆Onions(洋葱)
Placing your onions inside your refrigerator will eventually end up turning them rotten and soft. Unpeeled onions should be kept out of plastic bags and fridge. One of the reasons for this is because unpeeled onions require and need air exposure for maximum life. If you have peeled (剥皮) an onion though, then you should keep it in the fridge, in a covered container.
1.Why should bananas be kept at normal temperature?
A. They can keep fresh long. B. They can remain their hardness.
C. They can keep their normal colour. D. They can grow delicious to eat.
2.What should you do to keep potatoes well?
A. Wrap them in paper bags. B. Put them in open containers.
C. Keep them in airtight cardboard boxes. D. Store them in a cool, wet and dark space.
3.Which of the following can be stored in the fridge under certain condition?
A. Bananas. B. Potatoes. C. Onions. D. Garlic.
