Australia has passed regulations that will enable more international students to further their education in the country.
The new measures were released by the Australian Department of Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations in September and will take effect in mid-2012.
As a result, the student visa application process for overseas students has been simplified, and the deposit (押金) required to study in Australia has been reduced. Language requirements for overseas students have also been eased.
Also, overseas students receiving a higher education in Australia will be granted a working visa lasting from two to four years after graduation, as long as they meet the basic IELTS requirement.
"This change will definitely make Australia a more attractive destination for Chinese students planning to study overseas," says Wang Lan, a consultant from Education International Cooperation Group (EIC), a Beijing-based company that provides services to students wishing to study overseas.
However, in the past few years, many of Wang's student clients (客户) could not start studies in Australia because they did not meet the language requirements, visa processing took a long time and deposit regulations were tough. The change in policy is good news for the parents of students wishing to study in Australia, Wang says.
A 22-year-old female student surnamed Li, in Beijing, who is planning to do her postgraduate studies in Australia, learned about the policy change several weeks ago.
"According to the previous deposit requirement for my student visa, my family was required to put down 550,000 yuan ($86,850). Now we only need to prepare 410,000 yuan. This is a relief for my parents," Li says.
She also says that the two to four years working visa makes her feel much clearer about her study plans.
"I believe several years of working experience abroad will strengthen my competitiveness when I return to China," she says.
Gaining a competitive advantage is the major reason for Chinese students to study abroad, according to the report by EIC.

This summer, I, along with several other international students, traveled to the region of Berounka and found a lovely camping place beside the river. At night, I shared a tent with three girls from Brazil, the United States, and Belgium. 1. I didn’t know what to bring, just my sleeping bag and some warm clothes. And with the light of the campfire burning all night, I was unable to sleep until 1 o’clock.
Later that morning, when we were all on the raft and ready to leave, I was told to sit in the middle because I’d never used a paddle (桨)before. 2. Once we set off, my US friend showed me how to use a paddle. I found it wasn’t so hard---it just made my arms really tired. I listened carefully to what my friends were saying at the same time looking around at the beautiful scenery. 3.
Suddenly, the raft turned over and we all fell into the water. My friends managed to reach the other side of the river quickly, but they couldn’t catch me. I felt panicked but wanted to get out of the water as soon as I could. 4.
At last, I finally made it to a rock near the riverbank. I was so delighted and asked my friends to take a photo of me. 5.From then on, I tried rafting almost every summer. My experience taught me that we should try new things and get to know new people, even if it means facing danger.
A.I’d never camped outside before.
B.I heard my friends cheering me up loudly.
C.I shared what I brought with my three roommates.
D.So I grasped my paddle and swam stoutly(勇敢地,坚决地).
E.I held on tightly to my paddle, not daring to move one bit.
F.I had fallen into the river, but I fell in love with this sport too.
G.Tree-filled mountains, the clear blue sky, and wooden cottages surrounded me.

Students from Florida International University in. Miami walked on water Thursday for a class assignment. To do it, they wore aquatic (水上的)shoes they designed and created.
Alex Quinones was the first to make it to the other side of a 175-foot lake on campus in record time - just over a minute. Quinones, who wore oversized boat-like shoes, also won last year and will receive $ 500. A large crowd on campus joined Canaves as he cheered on the racers. He shouted encouraging words, but also laughed as some unsteadily made their way to the end.
"A part of this is for them to have more understanding of designing and make it work better, " he said. It is also a lesson in life for the students.
