The reading skills of young male students may improve more when huts are tutored (辅导) by women, a Canadian study shows, contradicting some school policies to hire male teachers to improve boys' literacy.
Herb Katz, an education professor at the University of Alberta, took 175 boys in the third and fourth grades, identified as struggling readers, and paired them with a research assistant who worked on their reading skills for 30 minutes a week over 10 weeks.
On average, the boys paired with female tutors felt better about their reading skills after the 10 weeks than those who were guided by a male research assistant, the study found.
Katz said the study, published in the US journal Sex Roles, may cause educational policy - makers in countries such as Australia and Britain to rethink policies that call for more male teachers to be hired to provide role models for boys whose reading skills fall behind their peers (同龄人). "It tells us that the way governments respond with policy is perhaps a little too quick and a little too simple," Katz said." Boys and girls enter kindergarten with similar reading skills, Katz said, but by the end of the third grade, boys have lower reading scores than girls. The reasons behind that difference are not entirely clear. "I don't know that reading skills fade so much as teachers may not recognize what boys are doing," he said. "We don't really know a lot about boys, even in those early years."
The boys involved in the study attended 12 schools in the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Most were from downtown neighborhoods. About a third were native Canadians and 55 percent came from ethnic minority groups.

How to Improve Speed Reading Skills
Speed reading is one of many skills that can improve your reading comprehension and shorten your study time. 1..
Look at groups of words, not single words.
2.. However, if you can get into the habit of reading groups or chunks of words at one time, then you can read much faster. Start by trying to look at a group of three or four words at once, then work up to looking at an entire line of words. Focus on words that give the sentence meaning, such as the nouns and verbs and pay less attention to the filler words, such as “A, the, and, etc.”
Scan for keywords.
Scanning is a highly effective way of extracting answers from a text without really reading it. If you know exactly what you are looking for—a name, a date, a statistic, or a specific word—you can find it quickly by skipping over large chunks of the text. To scan, first visualize the word, number, or phrase you would like to find. 3.. The information you are looking for should pop out at you.
4..
You can train yourself to read faster by timing yourself as you go. Start by getting your base time. Set a timer for fifteen minutes, and speed read as you normally do. 5.. Do not count the words, just the pages or paragraphs. Record your figures: for instance, you might write “15min/6.5 pages.”
A. Then, run your eyes rapidly over the text
B. Race the clock
C. Check your comprehension
D. If you read a text one word at a time, then this will slow your reading speed way down
E. Here are some Speed Reading Techniques
F. One of the reasons you read slowly is that you have to pause sometimes to understand what a passage is saying
G. When the timer goes off, check to see how far you have got

Five Ways to Improve Reading Comprehension
Help your child keep what he reads—a crucial skill, especially as he gets older and needs to gain important information from textbooks.
Have him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads. 1. Provide the right kinds of books. Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren’t too hard. 2. Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for him to focus on the overall meaning of the story.
3. To gain meaning from text, your child needs to read quickly and smoothly—a skill known as fluency. Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly, so he’ll become more fluent.
Supplement class reading. If his class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the topic. 4.
Talk about what he’s reading. 5. Ask questions before, during, and after a reading session.
For example:
•Before: “What interests you in this book? What doesn’t?”
•During: “What’s going on in the book? Is it turning out the way you thought it would?”
•After: “Can you summarize the book? What did you like about it?”
A. He should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help.
B. Select books that are appealing to your child but not too challenging.
C. Some prior knowledge will help him get better prepared and make his way through tougher classroom texts.
D. This “verbal processing” helps him remember and think through the themes of the book.
E. Plus, he’s not only seeing the words, he’s hearing them, too.
F. Have him reread to build fluency.
G. Increase the speed of reading.
