“You will be in my heart forever. Without you, there are only emptiness and desert in my life...” This is a line from a heartfelt poem Feng Duan wrote to his fiancee Chen Lianfang in 1955.
Feng is now 94 and Chen 90, and they have been married for more than half a century. Feng, an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, may not be a professional poet but for 64 years, Feng has written countless love poems to his wife. On every important anniversary or festival, Feng would send a poem to Chen. In 1978, when Chen’s cancer surgery succeeded, Feng created more than ten poems to celebrate his wife’s recovery. Chen used a red suitcase to store these love poems. The academic has also translated many English, French and German poems into classical Chinese.
The couple was introduced to each other by a common friend in 1953 and Feng sent two paper copies of poems to Chen as a gift.
“As long as I think of you, a beam of sunshine lights up my heart,” Feng wrote.
Chen recalled the first time Feng invited her to his dormitory to have a cup of tea and she thought the cup was made of frosted glass. As the two became closer, Chen often visited the academic’s dorm. She realized that the cup was the only one poor Feng owned. The opaque (不透明的) cup was not frosted glass but common glass stained with toothpaste.

It goes without saying, but bears repeating, there are too many cats and dogs without homes. While there are countless shelters and rescue centers that exist, some potential pet owners look to pet shops to find their furry friends. All too often, however, these animals come from puppy and kitten mills (繁殖场) that treat the creatures in cruel ways. San Francisco, however, is doing their part to stop this abuse with pet store adoption. Officials recently voted to ban the sale of non-rescue dogs and cats in local shops.
The effect is two-fold. One, it will stop the popularity of the large-scale mills, which are famous for the miserable conditions cats and does are kept in. Two, it will help facilitate the adoption of thousands of animals that are waiting for their forever homes in San Francisco shelters. District 4 Supervisor Katy Tang, who serves on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, supported law-making on the ban. “Dogs and cats sold in pet stores often come from inhumane puppy and kitten mills that treat animals with no regard for their health or well-being”, she wrote on Facebook. In her message, she also called on the U. S. Agriculture Department to reinstate information on its website that documents these types of animal cruelty cases—it was removed earlier this month.
San Francisco’s law-making is a victory for those concerned about animal rights, and they aren’t the first city to pass this type of measure. Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and Austin also have similar laws in place, with hopefully more places to follow suit.
1.What happened to some dogs and cats before they got in the pet stores?
A. They were treated cruelly.
B. They were abandoned in streets.

2.Which of the following may Katy Tang agree with most?
A. People should adopt the dogs and cats.
B. Animals are too cruel to humans being.
C. Government can choose to kill all the dogs and cats.
D. It is not right to ban the sale of non-rescue dogs and cats in local shops.
3.What does the underlined word “reinstate” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. update B. replace
C. post again D. download
4.What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?
A. No Chinese city joins this type of movement.

C. Americans care about animals more than humans.
D. More and more cities are involved in animal rights.

There are hundreds of grape varieties in Japan, but only one can sell for several hundred dollars per grape. The Ruby Roman was cultivated in Japan’ s Ishikawa Prefecture and is considered one of the world’ s most expensive fruits.
The story of Ruby Roman began in 1995, when Ishikawa grape farmers appealed to the government to create a large red grape variety. 400 experimental vines(葡萄树)were planted into a test field. Two years later; they started bearing fruit. However, out of the 400 vines, only 4 turned out to be red grapes, and only one of them was considered large enough to meet the farmers’ expectations. Over the next 14 years, researchers constantly improved its size, taste, color and ease of planting, and today Ruby Roman is considered a “treasure of Ishikawa”.
In 2008, soon after making its commercial debut(首秀), the Ruby Roman grape variety made international headlines after a 700-gram bunch sold for 10,000 yen($910), or $26 per grape. Eight years later, a 26-grape bunch sold for 1.1 million yen($11,000), or roughly $370 per grape.
While the Ruby Roman name is used to describe a type of grapes, every bunch must meet very strict standards. For example, every grape in the bunch must weigh at least 20 grams and have a sugar content of at least 18 percent. There is also a Premium class of Ruby Roman grapes—each grape must weigh over 30 grams, and the whole bunch must be at least 700 grams heavy.
Most bunches of Ruby Roman grapes are sold through auctions(拍卖), but Premium Ruby Rose are extremely difficult to find. For example, in 2010, only six bunches of grapes were certified Premium, and in 2011 no bunches qualified for it.
And if you’ re wondering how the Ruby Roman name came to be, it was apparently voted by local residents(居民)out of 639 different names.
1.The underlined word“cultivated”in the first paragraph can be best replaced by”_________”.
A.discovered B.preserved
C.developed D.promoted
2.According to the second paragraph, Ruby Roman _________.
A.is widely planted in Japan B.does not come easily
C.used to be a treasure of Ishikawa D.is more productive than expected
3.What’s the author’s purpose in listing a number of figures in paragraph 3 ?
A.To explain how large Ruby Roman grapes are.
B.To tell how profitable planting Ruby Roman is.
C.To prove how popular Ruby Roman is globally.
D.To show how expensive Ruby Roman grapes are.
4.What does the text say about the Ruby Roman grape?
A.It’s named after its birthplace.
B.It isn’t available in abundance.
C.It doesn’t refer to only one grape variety.
D.Its price has nothing to do with its color.

For years and years people have been saying that the railways are dead. “ We can do without railways.” People say…as if motorcars and planes have made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, and that they’re dying .But this is far from the truth: in these days of expensive oil, the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they are cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway.
