I’m a commercial diver for Global Divers in Louisiana. I perform underwater repairs on offshore drilling equipment.
My office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It’s a wet suit.
This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel-powered industrial water heater. This equipment sucks the water out of the sea, heating it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden tube, which is tied to the air tube.
I’ve used it several times with no complaints. What I do when I get to the bottom and start working is take the tube and stuff it down the back of my wet suit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It’s fantastic because it’s like working in a bathtub.
Last week, I had a bad day at the office. When I started working, everything was going well until all of a sudden, my bottom started to itch(痒). So, of course, I scratched it. This, of course, only made things worse. Within a few seconds,my bottom started to feel a burning sensation. I pulled the tube out from my back, thinking that maybe the water was too hot, but the damage was done.
In severe pain, I realized what had happened. The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish(水母)and pumped it directly into my suit. When I had scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually touching the jellyfish, and its poisonous tentacles(触角)stung me on the crack of my bottom.
I immediately informed the dive supervisor of my problem over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he and five other divers were all laughing loudly. 35 minutes later, I arrived at the surface. I was wearing nothing but my helmet. And my bottom was swollen.
1.What did the author think of the water heater before the incident?
A.It was useless. B.It was dangerous.
C.It was satisfying. D.It needed to be improved.
2.What actually caused the author’s discomfort while working?
A.A jellyfish. B.A bathtub.
C.The hot water. D.The wet suit.
3.How did the author probably feel after he went ashore?
A.Excited. B.Delighted. C.Calm. D.Embarrassed.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.My Daily Work B.A Bad Day at Work
C.The Hardships of My Job D.An Office under Water

In order to go diving, you need some equipments. First divers carry their backs a metal bottle, which is filled of water. There’s enough air in it to last about 40 minutes. Next, divers carry heavy metal weights in a belt around its bodies. With these heavy weights they would float to the surface. You see, there are a lot of air in their air bottles, and this will bring them up to the surface if they didn’t have any more weights. Mostly divers don’t go very deep. | 76_______ 77_______ 78_______ 79_______ 80_______ 81_______ 82_______ 83_______ 84_______ 85_______ |

Usually most divers don’t go very deep.Mainly they dive to a deep of about 20 meters. Then they swam around as they slowly return to the surface.Everyone wants to dive must first have diving lessons. There are the number of dangers that you have to learn about. For one thing, you might have problems with its air bottle.A diver must know however the equipment works and be able to recognize possible problem. There are also dangerous types of fish that you must look out for.You must be familiar to the environment you’ll be diving in.Before you go on a dive, make sure you know that what you are getting into.Diving may look easily, but if you don’t have the necessary training,it can be both difficult and dangerous.

Sea urchins (海胆) are small creatures, but what’s really remarkable about them is that they eat anything that happens to float by. They have really sharp teeth they use to rid rocks of algae (海澡), which makes them pretty valuable especially in places like Hawaii where algae are threatening the coral reefs. In the summer of 2019, 500,000 of them were used to deal with the algae.
The problem started when non-native algae were introduced to the ecosystem of Kane’ohe Bay in the 1970s. Because they had no enemies, they ended up taking over the bay, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). The algae blocked sunlight from reaching the coral, which in turn affected the local fish because they changed the chemistry of the water.
That's when the NMFS turned to sea urchins that loved to devour the algae. But they had to grow to the size of a cherry tomato before they could be used. Since 2011, sea urchins have been grown and used to handle the algae problem. Some of the funds are available due to an unfortunate incident.
In 2005, a ship was grounded on a shallow reef near Kane’ohe Bay. When the ship was removed, 20 acres of reefs have been damaged. When there is environmental damage, the NMFS and other agencies receive funds from the wrongdoers and the funds are used to restore the damage. Some funds were spent on other projects like the sea urchins. When they are large enough, divers carefully place them on the reef.
Algae isn’t the only thing that threatens the coral reefs. Climate change and the effects of fishing and tourism in the area also endanger the coral reefs. But turning to sea urchins instead of man-made solutions seems like the best way to go.
1.Why are sea urchins regarded as outstanding creatures?
A.They are tiny but have teeth. B.They can keep the ocean clean.
C.They are useful in removing algae. D.They grow on coral reefs with algae.
2.What happened after non-native algae arrived at Kane’ohe Bay?
A.They helped the coral reefs to survive. B.They spread to every corner of the bay.
C.They didn’t fit in with the new surroundings. D.They fought against other species to get food.
3.What does the underlined word “devour” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Eat. B.Block. C.Tease. D.Attract.
4.What does the author suggest doing to save coral reefs?
A.Relying on humans’ solutions. B.Banning fishing and tourism.
C.Employing divers to handle algae. D.Letting nature take care of nature.

Elephant seals in funny-looking hats are helping NASA study climate science.
Equipped with specialized sensors that resemble tiny metal hats with antennae(大线),these seals are collecting data that's helping researchers track how heat moves through ocean currents. A team of climate scientists led by Lia Siegelman used this clever technique to track changes in temperature as the seal swam the icy waters of the Antarctic.
With the help of one particularly female seal, the researchers discovered that heat stored at the ocean's depths can sometimes get swirled(打旋)back up to the surface thanks to some deeply penetrating(穿透)currents. While researchers have known that these currents can ferry heat downward into the ocean's interior(内部),the new findings suggest the opposite is true as well-driving a process that can warm the sea's surface as well.
Siegelman thinks it's important to include this new information into existing climate models. Before seals entered the picture, scientists had a pretty limited view of what went on beneath the surface of the Southern Ocean. Here, temperatures can suddenly fall below-1℃,and thick sheets of sea ice block instruments from collecting data. All in all,it's a pretty unappealing area for underwater field work.
But none of that troubles southern elephant seals, which spend nine to ten months of each year at sea, swimming thousands of miles and diving up to half a mile beneath the ocean surface-usually about 80 times a day.
So Siegelman and her colleagues tagged a female elephant seal on the Kerguelen Islands. The researchers followed her 3,000-mile journey, during which she dived 6,333 times."Even when they sleep, they dive,"Siegelman said.“They float down like a leaf."
Combined with satellite images, the wealth of data the seal recovered gave Siegelman and her team a clearer picture than they'd ever been afforded before. It's probably safe to say that the significance of this was lost on the seal. But from the human perspective(观点),it's clear seals are filling in some massive gaps in knowledge.
1.How did the researchers collect climate data in the Antarctic?
A.By testing a high-tech hat.
B.By studying a seal's behavior.
C.By measuring the water temperature.
D.By attaching a sensor to a seal's head.
2.The new findings indicate that_
A.ocean currents can drive heat up to the surface
B.heat can be taken down into the ocean's interior
C.the warm temperatures can help seals dive deep
D.the world's waters can balance global warming
3.The researchers used seals to monitor the Southern Ocean probably because.
A.the scenery is unattractive
B.the sea floor is changeable
C.seals are aggressive hunters
D.seals are extraordinary divers
4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Seals help us observe the unknown world.
B.Satellites are used to track human activities.
C.The ocean presents a more beautiful picture.
D.Data are analyzed for better survival of seals.

Chinese writer Mo Yan’s Nobel Prize for Literature might ignite an explosion of global interest in Chinese literature and lead to more titles translated into English, European experts say.
“Hopefully, the award means more people will read Chinese literature and more works will get translated,” says Michel Hockx, professor of the Languages and Cultures of China and Inner Asia from University of London. “Many very good Chinese writers have been accepted globally for a long time already. Mo Yan is probably the most translated Chinese writer alive, with at least five of his novels made available in English over the past 20 years.”
Jonathan Ruppin, web editor of bookseller Foyles, says Mo’s win coincides with growing interest in Chinese literature and recognizes the talents of a distinctive and visionary writer. “We are very excited by the fact that English translations of more of his books should now become available,” Ruppin says. He made the comment after Mo became the first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in its century-long history.
As East-West cultural exchange has been booming, Chinese literature has been attracting growing attention in recent years. Hockx explains, “It’s mainly because there are many more opportunities for Chinese writers to visit other countries, to publish their works outside China and to interact with readers abroad. At the same time, more and more people globally are learning Chinese and taking an interest in the Chinese language and culture .”
University of Oxford lecturer in modern Chinese literature Margaret Hillenbrand says, “The obvious reason for the growing global presence of Chinese literature is the growing global presence of China itself. People have come to realize that there is a serious knowledge deficit between China and its international counterparts — in particular,China knows incomparably more about Europe and America than the other way round— and reading Chinese literature is an effective, simple means of solving that gap.”
1.The underlined word “ignite” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”.
A. start out B. burn up
C. set off D. appeal to
2.Chinese literature has been attracting growing attention mainly because ________.
A. Chinese writers have been writing more and more books in English
B. the Chinese language has become the most wide used language in the world
C. the Chinese government attaches great importance to literature
D. the cultural communication between China and western countries has developed
3.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Chinese literature has spread with the development of China.
B. The Nobel Prize for Literature has a history of hundreds of years.
C. In the past, no Chinese writers were accepted outside China.
D. Foreigners know about China mainly by reading Mo Yan’s works.
4.How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A. China knows more about Europe and America than before.
B. China knows more about Europe and America than they know about China.
C. China, Europe and America know one another more than before.
D. Compared with America, China knows more about Europe.
