We all know the hard work that filmmakers and actors put in to provide us with entertainment.
1.
For decades now, film studios have used so-called test screenings to get feedback from members of the public before a movie comes out. 2. However, media giant Disney has come up with a more high-tech solution: to measure test audiences’ reactions by using special cameras placed inside cinemas.
Pairing the cameras with custom software, the company can track what each audience member is feeling at any point in the movie, from anger to joy. 3. The cameras can see in the dark, and the software can figure out a person’s mood based on the slightest of facial expressions. It’s hoped that this new method will allow more detailed feedback from test audiences because it can accurately read their reactions in real-time.
Test screening are highly valued in the movie industry. 4. Viewers of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) would have left the cinema feeling a whole lot different if it weren’t for its test audience’s feedback. “In one cut of the film that was tested, E. T. died instead of going home in his spaceship. You won’t be surprised to hear that the test audience in question didn’t warm to this ending at all.” wrote media website Den of Geek.
But for those who are concerned about privacy, the cameras won’t be installed in public cinemas.
5.
A. In reality, not all of the people are content with the effect of the movies.
B. This works by mapping 68 different points on each audience member’s face.
C. And several well-known movies have been greatly changed following feedback.
D. The special cameras in public cinemas easily go wrong and often fail to work.
E. After all, unless you’re part of a test audience, being in front of the cameras is best left to the movie stars.
F. But it seems that even regular moviegoers like us have a big impact on how a movie turns out too.
G. Test audience members are usually asked to fill in a questionnaire after a screening, telling the film studio what they liked and didn’t like.

Our young Mr. Smith, who was finding it difficult to earn his daily bread, remembered that once upon a time he had learned the art of making tacks and had the sudden idea of making a bargain with the shoemakers. He told them that he would make the tacks if they would help to get him settled in the workshop. The shoemakers were only too glad of the offer. Young adult filmmakers all hope to show their works in international festivals like Sundance and Toronto. But what about really young filmmakers who aren’t in film school yet and aren’t, strictly speaking, even adults?
They are at the heart of Wingspan Arts Kids Film Festival, tomorrow, in a setting any director might envy: Lincoln Center. Complete with “red carpet” interviews and various awards, the festival has much in common with events for more experienced moviemakers, except for the age of the participants: about 8 to 18.
“What’s really exciting is that it’s film for kids by kids,” said Cori Gardner, managing director of Wingspan Arts, a nonprofit organization offering youth arts programs in the New York area. This year the festival will include films not only from Wingspan but also from other city organizations and one from a middle school in Arlington, Virginia. “We want to make this a national event,” Ms. Gardner added.
The nine shorts to be shown range from a Claymation biography of B. B. King to a science fiction adventure set in the year 3005. “A lot of the material is really mature,” Ms. Gardner said, talking about films by the New York City branch of Global Action Project, a media arts and leadership-training group. “The Choice is about the history of a family and Master Anti-Smoker is about the dangers of secondhand smoke. Dream of the Invisibles describes young immigrants’(移民) feelings of both belonging and not belonging in their adopted country.”
The festival will end with an open reception at which other films will be shown. These include a music video and a full-length film whose title is Pressures.

We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home,” has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal.
Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County. Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the dump. “I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miler. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!”
Shelby has come a long way from the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently had needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,” Buhler said.

B.To introduce a dog’s similar but even more striking experiences.
C.To attract reader’s attention by giving dramatic examples.

A.the dog returned to the piles of trash where she found it
B.it took quite a lot of trouble for the dog to change her own fate.
C.she’s really excited to see the dog she helped live such a happy life
D.the dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her inner quality
