▲ Growing up as one of three girls I’ve always been keen on women’s issues. And now with three daughters to raise,I have the responsibility of ensuring that they grow up without any preconceived(预想的) ideas of their capabilities & potential based on their gender.Earlier this year I read an article that indicated that women surpassed men in the workforce for the first time in history. That is a milestone! And while we still don’t have equality in leadership positions or pay (especially if you’re a mom),we have made significant progress over the past couple of decades. All this prompted me to do some digging around to see what else I could learn. Here are some fun facts from the census bureau for you:

●55% of all college students were women in the Fall of 2008.
●60% of women 20 years or older participate in the workforce today vs.34% in 1950.
●14% of the armed forces were women in 2008.compared to 2% in 1950.
▲We’re all looking to stretch the value of our dollar as much as possible.Every day as you juggle the needs of your family, remember to eat right, take your vitamins and keep up with laundry and bills-you probably also look for budget friendly, family appropriate activities.A day trip to a national park is a great way to explore all the wonders of nature, without breaking the bank.Once or twice a month,my wife and I will prepare for a leisurely hike in one of our favorite parks close to home. The night before, she makes some homemade granola and I make sure our reusable water bottles are full and on ice.Next time you’re looking for an inexpensive adventure that your family isn’t soon to forget, take a hike! To find a national park near you, just visit www.nps.gov

高三英语阅读理解简单题查看答案及解析
In my time here at Carleton College, I’ve picked up many valuable pieces of advice from others, and have come up with a few of my own. With my time here drawing to a close, here’s two of the most valuable ones I wish I had known as a freshman .
First, don’t expect to join all the clubs here. Taking part in them is good, but the workload here is too heavy and time with your friends is too limited to devote yourself to a million and one clubs. Find a couple of things you dig, and you’ll find yourself much happier than if you had spent your time joining every single organization that sounds somewhat interesting to you. Also, don’t always think of your free time in terms of organizations you can join. Getting really good at something - an instrument, creative writing, cooking - is just as good a use of your free time, even if it might never be taken into any resume(简历).
Second, when Socrates said “Know Yourself”, he was talking about your sleep schedule. You can fool yourself into thinking that an 8:30 a. m. class in the winter is the perfect way to get your day started, but you soon may find yourself emailing the teacher with excuses for being absent. Scheduling all your classes afternoon is sometimes equally deadly; you might just end up going out the night before knowing you can safely sleep in. I’ve found that the way to take classes is to load them in the middle of the day; nothing before 9:50 a. m., nothing after 3:10 p. m.
1.Who is probably the author of the text?
A.A school headmaster. B.A graduating student.
C.A university teacher. D.A freshman at Carleton.
2.Which of the following can replace the underlined word“dig”in paragraph 2?
A.make a hole in B.work hard on
C.research into D.are fond of
3.What does the author suggest doing in one's free time at college?
A.Getting apart-time job.
B.Join clubs that seem interesting.
C.Take up a few hobbies.
D.Prepare a resume as early as possible.
4.What is the best t me for taking classes according to the author?
A.In the evening. B.In the afternoon.
C.From8:30a.m.to9:50a.m.. D.From9:50a.m.to3:10p.m..

HAIKOU---Customs officers in Haikou, capital of South China’s Hainan Province, recently stopped a boat loaded with 781 cases of foreign-brand cigarettes being smuggling into China. The cigarettes are estimated to be worth more than 1.8 million yuan, said a customs officer. They discovered the smuggling boat as they were going around the northern sea area of Yangpu Port.
The smuggled cigarettes cases, packed into two containers, were disguised to avoid being examined. The boat was registered in the coastal city Xiamen in East China’s Fujian Province. All eight suspects aboard the boat were kept by the police in Haikou.

Here are two letters from our readers expressing their concern about school assessment (评价):
(l)
Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades (学习成绩). Fortunately, most educators realize that students have different interests and abilities. However, grade-based assessment is still very common. Grades often hold back creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to go in for music, drama and sports. Grades are also an unfair measure of a student’s ability. I do not demand, as some extremists do, that grades should no longer be recorded. However, I do believe that less importance should be placed on. grades. I hope that someday grades will become optional(可选择的) at Village High School.
Magdalena Smith, President
Drama Club

Let’s face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions( 功能). First, grades get students to work at their highest level of competence (能力 ). Second, they act as an encouragement for hard-working students and as a warming to those who are not. Finally, grades are an effective standard by which to measure students' achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university.
I've spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired mainly because of their grades. My grades helped me get a part-time job and will help me into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.

The amount of carbon taken in by growing plants increased from 1982 through 1999 as
temperatures rose and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased. But a new study
in Friday ’ s edition of the journal Science found a drought - related decline in such plant growth
from 2000 to 2009,even though temperatures continued to climb.
As drought caused by warming reduces the land ’ s ability to take in carbon, the result could
be more carbon dioxide left in the atmosphere, and thus more warming,Zhao Maosheng from the
University of Montana explained in a telephone interview.
“This is a pretty serious warning that warmer temperatures are not going to endlessly improve
plant growth ’” co - author Steven Running, also from the University of Montana ’ said in a
statement. “ We see this as a bit of a surprise, and potentially significant on a policy level because
previous interpretations suggested global warming might actually help plant growth around the
world, “ he said.
Instead, he and Zhao found a small but measurable decline of about 1%,compared to a 6%
increase in the past decade.
Their study, based on the data collected by NASA satellites, found that north areas continued
to increase plant growth, thanks to warmer temperatures and a longer growing season.
Someone commented, "This past decade’ s net decline in earthly productivity suggests that a
complex relationship between temperature, rainfall, cloudiness, and carbon dioxide, probably in
combination with other factors such as nutrients (营养)and land management, will determine
future patterns and trends in productivity.,,
1.From the first paragraph, we can learn in the recent decade or so.
A. the emission(排放)of carbon hasn’ t been reduced
B. draught has been causing loss of soil and water
C. carbon dioxide levels have been rising
D. the rise of temperature doesn' t promote the plant growth
2.Zhao Maosheng really worried that__ .
E. more and more land will be abandoned
F. the climate becomes warmer and warmer
G. the emission of carbon dioxide increases
H. draught further reduces the number of the plants
3.Steven Running made his statement to__ .
I. confirm Zhao' s views on the influence of temperature rise
J. urge the government to take necessary measures
K. warn the people to strengthen the plant protection
L. support Zhao* s views on lhe plant production
4. We can infer from the passage that______ .
A. global warming will determine the future productivity
B. various factors play a key role jointly on future productivity
C. earthly productivity actually increased in the past decade
D. temperature rise has had no effect on future producticity patterns
